August 5, 2018 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS EX 16: 2-4, 12-15; PS 78: 3-4, 23-25, 54; EPH 4: 17, 20-24; JN 6: 24-35 In the Gospel from John, Jesus advises us, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. By calling Himself the Bread of Life, Jesus is telling us by what He says, how He acts, and in fact Who He is that He is the Word of God made flesh. God reveals to us the Word alive in the most complete way possible, through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are to hear the Word and know Who Jesus is; we are to accept that Word into our minds and hearts into our spirit and we are to let that Word begin to change us. That change is represented by knowing what God wants us to do. Today s Holy Scriptures make that clear. We must pray that we respond and do be good stewards of our time, talent, and treasure so that we can do the work God wants us to do. In the Second Reading, Paul reminds us that we need to undergo a conversion in effect put on a new self. Our entire lives need to be devoted to change, so that we renew ourselves from the inside and live a stewardship way of life according to God s ways. Charles Spurgeon, an English minister in the 1800s once wrote, Conversion is a turning onto the right road. The next thing to do is to walk on it. That is our trial. Once we experience conversion, we must follow through by doing what the Lord wishes us to do. Do I make my relationship with Jesus a top priority? In what ways can I improve this relationship? ii. Do I spend time in prayer, reading the Bible, truly fostering my faith life? iii. What does it mean to me to have a personal relationship with Christ? Do I take this seriously? Do I truly know Christ and strive to be in relationship as scripture calls? iv. How do I spend my time? Do I make sure to set aside time to foster my relationship with Christ? Do I pray, read the Bible, attend Adoration, do works of mercy? v. How do I prepare for Mass? Do I make sure to dress appropriately, pay attention, be respectful, actively listen to God s voice in the Mass? Faith Formation- As we prepare for the 2018-2019 Faith Formation Year, we are reminded of the need for dedicated Christians to serve in the Faith Formation Ministries. New volunteers are needed to join the team with training provided. Floral arrangements are prepared on Fridays for the upcoming weekend. Please consider joining the team of trained volunteers. Bo Lead Needed for Christmas and Easter: St Gabriel s is in need of a volunteer to spearhead decorating the church for both Christmas and Easter seasons. Continuity information is available and experienced volunteers will be available to assist. Please prayerfully consider this important role. Immaculate Heart of Mary Honoring Mary's Immaculate Heart is really just another way of honoring Mary as the person who was chosen to be the Mother of God, recognizing her extraordinary holiness and the immense love she bestowed on Jesus as his mother, the person who was called to share in and co-operate in his redemptive sufferings. In Honor of the Immaculate Heart O heart of Mary, mother of God, and our mother; heart most worthy of love, in which the adorable Trinity is ever well-pleased, worthy of the veneration and love of all the angels and of all men; heart most like to the Heart of Jesus, of which thou art the perfect image; heart, full of goodness, ever compassionate toward our miseries; deign to melt our icy hearts and grant that they may be wholly changed into the likeness of the Heart of Jesus, our divine Savior. Pour into them the love of thy virtues, enkindle in them that divine fire with which thou thyself dost ever burn. In thee let Holy Church find a safe shelter; protect her and be her dearest refuge, her tower of strength, impregnable against every assault of her enemies. Be thou the way which leads to Jesus, and the channel, through which we receive all the graces needful for our salvation. Be our refuge in time of trouble, our solace in the midst of trial, our strength against temptation, our haven in persecution, our present help in every danger and especially at the hour of death, when all hell shall let loose against us its legions to snatch away our souls, at that dread moment, that hour so full of fear, whereon our eternity depends. Ah, then most tender virgin, make us to feel the sweetness of thy motherly heart, and the might of thine intercession with Jesus, and open to us a safe refuge in that very fountain of mercy, whence we may come to praise Him with thee in paradise, world without end. Amen. St. Gabriel the Archangel 5 Colorado Springs, CO

CLARE OF ASSISI At 18 years old, St. Clare of Assisi was inspired by Francis of Assisi and fled her palace and wealth to join Francis and begin her own religious order, the Poor Ladies of San Damiano (10 years after Clare s death the order would be renamed to the Order of St. Clare). The order became known for its life of dismal poverty, committed life of prayer, and seclusion from the world. In 1224, soldiers from Frederick II came to attack Assisi. While very sick, Clare went out to meet them with the Blessed Sacrament in her hands. Then on her knees, she begged God to save the Sisters. Suddenly a mysterious terror seized the enemies, who fled without harming anybody in the city. St. Clare died on August 11, 1253 at 59 years of age. Her last words where, Blessed be You, O God, for having created me. St. Clare is the patron saint of eye disease, goldsmiths, laundry, television. Her feast day is August 11th. WEEKLY FAITH TOPIC SACRISTAN PAUL TURNER Before the Mass begins, someone has to prepare for it. The sacristan diligently arranges the liturgical books, the vestments, and other things that are necessary for the celebration of Mass (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 105a). This short description summarizes the invaluable work performed behind the scenes by a person who helps us pray at the Eucharist. The sacristan may be a volunteer or a paid staff member. In some churches the priest or deacon performs this role. A sacristan needs knowledge of the principal liturgical books: the Roman Missal and the lectionary, as well as auxiliary materials such as the Rite of Baptism for Children and the Book of Blessings. A good sacristan will understand the liturgical year and know how to locate the texts for any Sunday in the primary books, marking them with ribbons. The sacristan will also be aware of special ceremonies taking place on particular days and be prepared to set the books accordingly. A sacristan may also set out the vestments to be worn by the priest and deacon. Traditionally, sacristans spread the vestments on a sacristy table, neatly arranged one on top of the other, so the clergy can don them in order. Sacristans also prepare the bread and wine, the vessels, and other materials necessary for the Mass. They usually bring the bread and wine to the back of the church where the procession of the gifts will begin, and they set other articles on the credence table in the sanctuary. You may not see them much after the service begins, but the Mass would not go smoothly without the careful, devoted work of a parish sacristan.
