From our March Speaker - William Maxwell. My name is William Maxwell, I was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas on 23 Jan 1953 and have lived here most of my life in Arkansas except while I was in the United States Navy Submarine Force from 1971 to 1977. My family on the Maxwell side has been in the state of Arkansas since the 1820's, when John and his brother James came here to survey the country to move their family. They settled in the southeast corner of Arkansas what is now Hamburg, Arkansas. My family moved back and forth from Louisiana and Arkansas on the Maxwell, Farrar and Neal lines. In the mid 1920's the Maxwell's moved from southeast to Northeast Arkansas, and settled in Monette, Arkansas where my dad (William Maxwell Sr.) was born. They call this land the sunk-land but it was good farming. I have worked for over 30 years on my genealogy and studying the history of the Cherokee People who lived in Arkansas. I have worked with many Native American groups in this state and other Cherokee historian in Arkansas who have been published. I have spent many hours in the History Center's at Little Rock and Fort Smith researching our history that has not been told. I have traveled across remote areas in Arkansas, Missouri and Tennessee looking for any information that could document the Cherokee people in this area. It is amazing what you can find if you just look. The Genealogist's Psalm Genealogy is my pastime, I shall not stray; It maketh me to lie down and examine half-buried tombstones. It leadeth me into still Court Houses, it restoreth my ancestral knowledge. It leadeth me in paths of census records and ships' passenger lists for my surname's sake. Yea, though I walk through the shadows of research libraries and microfilm readers, I shall fear no discouragement; for a strong urge is within me; the curiosity and motivation they comfort me. It demandeth preparation of storage space for the acquisition of countless documents; it anointest my head with burning midnight oil, my family group sheets runneth over. Surely birth, marriage, and death dates shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of a family-history seeker for ever.
