Priesthood Sunday October 24/25, 2015 Catholic parishes throughout New Hampshire and the United States will show support for their priests with prayers and special celebrations on the weekend of October 24 and 25. The last Sunday of October has in recent years been designated as Priesthood Sunday; a one-day celebration of the priesthood organized by parish lay leaders and coordinated by the USA Council of Serra International. Serra International is a lay organization whose aim is to foster and promote vocations to the Catholic priesthood and religious life, and encourages its members to fulfill their own Christian vocations to service. The lay faithful of each parish, school or other ministry are asked to develop their own special way of marking the day and honoring both priesthood and their own priests. Over the past few years parishes have shown their appreciation by hosting receptions after the Masses, placing an ad in the local newspaper honoring their priest, or presenting their priest with personalized notes reminding him of what he does to bring people closer to Christ. For more information on Priesthood Sunday go to: www.priestsunday.org PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY As a reminder to all Councils, I wanted everyone to know that the State web-site includes attachments for Priesthood Sunday that will aid Councils and other parish organizations in the preparation for a celebration of our priests central role in the life of the Church. Attachments include a template for Church Bulletin announcements, a template for suggested Prayers for the Faithful for all Masses that weekend, a Certificate of Appreciation that can be personalized for each priest in a parish, ideas for a parish celebration and other helpful templates. Please access the State Council website to see all that is available. Thank you. Rob Eib State Church Director Page 3 of 15

October is CHURCH DRIVE Month! It is very important that all councils prepare now for the October Church Drive. Thus far, our councils have done a fair job of recruiting this fraternal year, but it could be much better. The Supreme Council asks that during the month of October Page 4 of 15

the individual councils spend time concentrating on church drives in their area. 1. The Preparation Phase Get permission from your pastor to hold a Church Recruitment Drive Weekend after all Masses. Contact your council's field agent to get his assistance. Advertise the drive in the parish bulletin. Order all of your recruiting materials in advance through using the attached form. (See attached file: driveform.pdf) Organize your members into teams for the drive weekend. Make sure that enough council members are committed to covering each Mass. Conduct a First Degree Ceremonial within one week of the recruitment drive. If necessary, use the First Degree Video Production available via Officers Online. 2. The Implementation Phase Arrange for a membership recruitment announcement to be made before or after Mass. Have members, wearing Knights of Columbus branded apparel so they are easily identified, positioned at the entrances of the Church or other appropriate area, to talk to prospects about joining and help them complete a Membership Document (#100) or a Prospect Card (#921A) if he d rather learn more about the Knights before filling out a Membership Document. I will be asking for a complete report of your Church Drives by November 2, 2015. I will be sending out a report sheet for you to use at a later date. I hope that every council in the jurisdiction of New Hampshire has a successful month of recruitment! William D. McCarthy, PSD NH State Council Membership Director (603)434-7787 kcpgk@comcast.net STATE CHURCH DIRECTOR UPDATE: OCTOBER 2015 Pope Francis has declared an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to commence December 8, 2015 and end November 20, 2016. The Holy Father said that we need to call on the Lord s help since mercy is a grace, a gift from God. To be merciful, we must acknowledge that we are sinners. We must admit that we are sinners and are ashamed of our sins before forgiveness is requested. If we do this, good things will follow: we will truly be men! he says. With an attitude of repentance, we will be more capable of being merciful because we will feel God s mercy for us. Secondly, to be merciful, we need an openness to expanding our hearts. A big heart doesn t condemn but forgives and forgets. Who are we to judge others? Pope Francis also said, To change the world for the better we must do good to those who are unable to reciprocate, as the Father did with us, in giving us Jesus. We learn through Holy Mother Church how to be merciful: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned and bury the dead (Corporal Works of Mercy) and to counsel the doubtful, comfort the afflicted, forgive offenses, pray for the living and the dead, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners and bear wrongs patiently (Spiritual Works of Mercy). In our works and in our prayers, may we always be mindful of those who are unable to reciprocate. Page 5 of 15

HOLY FAMILY ICON PROGRAM: The two icons have arrived. Unfortunately, the program will need to be on hold for now until we receive the Prayer Booklets and Prayer Cards from Supreme. I will send out a notice of how we will proceed as soon as we get word from Supreme regarding the delivery of the other necessary materials. PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY: Designated for the weekend of October 24 th and 25 th, the national weekend of recognition for priests was begun by Serra Int l several years ago. The intent has been to honor the central role that priests play in the life of the church. As leaders in our parish communities, please work toward putting a day of celebration together to honor your priests. It would be great if you coordinated efforts with other parish ministries. We have placed on the State Council Web-site several templates that will help all Councils in the preparation and execution of a Priesthood Sunday celebration. Included among the templates is a Certificate of Appreciation that can be personalized for each priest in your parish. FIFTH SUNDAY ROSARY PROGRAM: This program was established by the Supreme Council to encourage all councils to sponsor Rosary Prayer Services on the 5 th Sunday of the following months: August 30, 2015; November 29, 2015; January 31, 2016 and May 29, 2016. Councils may pray the Rosary at each Mass or designate a specific Mass to pray the Rosary. Councils may also choose to conduct a separate Rosary Service at the Parish Hall or Council Hall on the fifth Sunday. Supreme is setting no themes for the Rosary Sundays and is leaving it up to Councils to set their own programs. I would recommend setting a different theme each month (i.e.: pray for Vocations; Religious Liberty; Culture of Life; Poor and marginalized, etc ) Conducting the Rosary Prayer Service on each of the four designated Sundays will fulfill all requirements for the Church activities section of the Columbian Award. Kits containing a supply of rosary rings, promotional materials and prayer cards are available from Supreme. Go to kofc.org/forms to access the order form. PATRIOTIC ROSARY: Rosary Service focused on the healing of our nation Vivat Jesus o Pray for Priests and all those who have chosen the path to consecrated life, pray for all government officials, pray for religious liberty, pray for each state and the residents of each state of the U.S. and sing songs of patriotism. o The Exeter Council began praying the Patriotic Rosary May 2013 and has consistently prayed the Rosary with the Parish Community each month since. o We designate the 4 th Monday of each month for the praying of the Patriotic Rosary at St. Michael (Exeter) and are bringing it to St. Mary (Newmarket) also. o Please see the State Web-site for the Patriotic Rosary template. Community Update - Glen White State Chairman Coats for Kids I know many councils have participated in the Coats for Kids ; and THANK YOU! It is NOT too late for councils to order coats for a Black Friday Distribution. We would like to know if you are participating. Please let me know if you participate in the program and how many coats you distribute. As a reminder, coats are available in cases of 12 at a cost of $220 (including shipping). Food for Families To encourage local Knights of Columbus councils to participate, the Supreme Council offers financial rebates to councils, which donate food or money; to a parish food pantry, community food bank or soup kitchen - up to a maximum of $500 per year. 1- The Supreme Council will refund $100 for every $500 donated, or 2- for every 500 pounds of food that a council contributes I know many of you are participating; and THANK YOU! Please, let me know if you are participating. State Blood Drive Committee Report - Emile Anderson Knights of Columbus parishes collect 5, 957 units of Blood currently, which is approximately 10-12% of the blood collected by the Red Cross. Emile is working with the RED CROSS on providing better coordination and marketing our blood drives. We have seen several drives increase the Blood received by 50% or more. Please contact the State level Red Cross Blood Drive coordinator Emile Anderson (email: andersoner@hotmail.com or 401-578-4914) for assistance on how we can help increase the Blood donations. Vivat Jesus Glen White; State Community Director State Family Director Report One of the key reasons that the Church is faltering under the attacks of Satan is that many Catholic men have not been willing to step into the breach to fill this gap that lies open and vulnerable to further attack. As Fr, Corapi once said, At this Time in History, Christians Should Put on their Armor of God, Pick up their Three-fold Weapon of Prayer, Fasting and Penance, and Get in the Fight against the World Rulers of this Present Darkness. Men we need to MAN UP and put on our Knight's Armor and defend the TRUE DOGMA of our Church! The following is an article from CNA/EWTN News dated Oct. 1, 2015. I would suggest if you have the time to read the full text of Bishop Olmsted's letter at http://www.intothebreach.net/into-the-breach/ Vivat Jesus, Jim <>< Read More http://www.nhknights.org/index.php/en/state-council/652-man-up Page 7 of 15

Our Lady of Guadalupe Documentary Dear Brother Knights, We are proud to announce that a new Knights of Columbus produced documentary film on Our Lady of Guadalupe begins airing across the country this Sunday on ABC affiliated stations. Narrated by actor Jim Caviezel, Guadalupe: The Miracle and the Message paints a comprehensive and inspiring picture of the history, facts, legacy and continued relevance of Our Lady of Guadalupe throughout the western hemisphere and beyond. The airings are presented as part of ABC s Visions and Values Series and have a broadcast window from Oct. 11 to Dec. 10. Over the course of four days in December 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to an indigenous convert named Juan Diego. Most experts and historians affirm that more than any other, this event, and the image miraculously imprinted on Juan Diego s tilma (cloak), has resulted in the mass conversion of millions of Native Americans to the Catholic faith. The message of Our Lady of Guadalupe helped to build bridges between the two worlds and began the transformation of our continent. Her appearance compelled people and cultures to unite under her mantle of compassion and charity in a way that didn t exist before. Through her intercession, then and now, Americans have found a deep sense of common faith, hope and identity. Guadalupe: The Miracle and the Message brings this remarkable history to life through modern reenactments, 3D animations of the mysterious image which allow viewers an unprecedented glimpse into the intricacies of the centuriesold wonder and interviews with leading theologians, historians and experts on the scientific inquiries into the story. The film delves into the inexplicable existence of the image on Juan Diego s tilma, the mystery found in her eyes and unveils breaking new anthropological insights into the symbols that spoke directly to the hearts of the indigenous people. For more information about the film, including broadcast times and the DVD release, visit www.guadalupethefilm.com or follow the hashtag #guadalupethefilm.
