St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Denton, Texas Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost August 12, 2018, 10:30 a.m. Hearing devices and large print Bibles and hymnals are available. Ask an usher. Gathering around God s Word Prelude Voluntary in G Henry Heron Welcome and Announcements Please sign the Ritual of Friendship pad in the pews. Ringing of the Bell Call to Worship (Adapted from Psalm 130) I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in the Lord s word I hope; My soul waits for the Lord More than those who watch for the morning, More than those who watch for the morning. Hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with the Lord is great power to redeem. Opening Prayer Lisa Patterson *Hymn 15 All Creatures of Our God and King (vss. 1, 3, 4, 6) lasst uns erfreuen Prayer of Confession (unison) O Lord our God, you call us to proclaim the gospel, but we remain silent in the presence of evil. You call us to be reconciled to you and one another, but we are content to live in separation. You call us to seek the good of all, but we fail to resist the powers of oppression. You call us to fight pretensions and injustice, but we sit idly by, endangering the lives of people far and near. Forgive us, O Lord. Reconcile us to you by the power of your spirit, and give us the courage and strength to be reconciled to others; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior. Amen (Time of silent confession). Sung Response You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy Hymn 437 You are the Lord, giver of mercy! You are the Christ, giver of mercy! You are the Lord, giver of mercy! Declaration of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Call to Faithfulness (Adapted from Acts 2: 36-39) Know this: There s no longer room for doubt God made Jesus Master and Messiah. Change your life. Turn to God, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, so your sins are forgiven. Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. God shows no partiality, but in every

nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. *Sung Response Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me Hymn 582 Prayer for Illumination Proclaiming God s Word Jim White First Scripture Reading 2 Samuel 18: 1-15 Old Testament, page 279 The Word of the Lord. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Presentation of Tithes & Offerings Offertory Pastorale Charles Wesley

Blessing of the Backpacks and Commissioning of the Students Sunday, August 12, 2018 We gather here in this place each week to worship God and prepare ourselves for the task of following Christ. We follow Christ into the world, living out our discipleship in the places God sends us. Today we commission the students whom God sends into our schools to learn and engage others. As they live out their calling in our schools, may they be a witness to God s love. Call to Discipleship The grace bestowed on you in baptism is sufficient for your calling because it is God s grace. By God s grace we are saved and enabled to grow in the faith and to commit our lives in ways that serve Christ. God sends you into the school to show God s love as you serve in your school as a disciple of Christ. Do you promise to show God s love each day at school? I do. Will you promise to pray for the students, teachers, and others at school? I will. Questions for the Congregation You have stood with these children and youth at their baptism as a sign of your support for them as they live out their discipleship. As part of that support, will you encourage them in the coming year as God sends them into the schools of our communities? We will. Will you pray for them and all the students, teachers, and administrators in our schools? We will. Commissioning Prayer Faithful God, in baptism you claim us and by your Holy Spirit you work in our lives, empowering us to live a life worthy of our calling. Guide these children and youth that they may grow in faith, hope, and love, and be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Help them to know your presence; show them how to love others as you do; protect them in all they do. Bless the backpacks and satchels they carry as symbols of your divine wisdom, care, and abiding presence with each of these your children. Lead us, guide us, and walk beside us, we pray. Amen.

*Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Disciple Fast Track begins this fall during Super Wednesdays Teachers: Jim Goodnow and B.L. Jordan Study Manual Cost: $16 each semester RSVP to Lisa Patterson by Sunday, September 2 to be included in the group. Fast Track is an adaptation of the original Disciple Bible Study. It provides a good option that recognizes busy people still seek deep engagement over time with the entire biblical text. The Fast Track group will meet 24 weeks during the fall and spring semesters of Super Wednesday from 6:15pm-7:30pm, devoting 12 weeks each to the Old Testament and the New Testament. Homework is typically a manageable 3-5 chapters of the Bible read daily in preparation for the weekly meetings. During each class, a brief, illustrated video enables participants to recall important points; and offers insights into the current week s session. As a part of the process, participants have the opportunity to take a spiritual gifts assessment and determine meaningful ways they can serve and live out their disciple commitment. Questions? Ask Jim Goodnow at jdgoodnow@gmail.com; B.L. Jordan at eljordan@verizon. net; or Lisa Patterson at lisa@saint-andrew.com.
