Jesus Rode into Jerusalem for You. April 9, 2017 Divine Service
Jesus Rode into Jerusalem for You Palm Sunday Welcome! We are a multicultural Lutheran congregation convinced that Jesus Christ s perfect life, innocent death, and triumphant resurrection have opened the doors of heaven to all people. We are thrilled that you have joined us today to learn more about your Savior. If there is any way we can be of service to you, please contact our pastor. About Our Worship Our worship is focused on Jesus Christ. The bible assures us that God out of his love sent Jesus to live, die, and rise again for all people. This has wonderful real-life applications. You'll find these applications throughout our worship service. It s also through worship, as we gather around God s Word and Sacraments, that we have our faith strengthened, our sins forgiven, and our confidence in God s promises renewed. Much of our service is designed to be responsive between the minister and the congregation. The minister will lead the sections marked (M). All worshipers are invited to join on the sections marked (C). For Your Convenience Restrooms are in the narthex, or back area of our church. If children need a quick break from the service, we also have a nursery area. This area is accessible from the entry area and has a view of our sanctuary, or worship area. Our ushers keep an eye on this area to make sure that children do not wander into our parking lot area. If there is any way we can assist you, please ask our ushers. Today s Focus Lent draws to a close as the people of God gather at the beginning of the Holy Week to celebrate the coming of Jesus to Jerusalem to suffer, die, and rise again. The majesty of the King is veiled by his humility and lowliness, but to the eyes of faith he is recognized as the Lord. 2
HYMN All Glory, Laud, and Honor 160 (1-3) INVOCATION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. 3
PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and branches of palms in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. FIRST LESSON Zechariah 9:9, 10 9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 24 4
The earth is the LORD S, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, he will receive blessing from God his Savior. Refrain Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty he is the King of glory. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain SECOND LESSON Philippians 2:5-11 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 5
7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. VERSE OF THE DAY The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified (John 12:23). GOSPEL Matthew 21:1-11 After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: 1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away. 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5 Say to Daughter Zion, See, your king comes to you, 6
gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, Hosanna [b] to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna [d] in the highest heaven! 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, Who is this? 11 The crowds answered, This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, 7
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY Ride On, Ride On, in Majesty 162 SERMON Jesus Rode In For You Matthew 21:1-11 CREATE IN ME 8
