Evensong Installation of Canon for Operations Thursday in Third Week of Lent 21 March 2019 5:15 pm Welcome to Grace Cadral. Choral Evensong marks end of working day prepares us for approaching night. The roots of this service are in ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. This form was created in 16th century by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, as part of a simplification of worship within newlyreformed Church of Engl. The Episcopal Church, as part of worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. Many guests life-long members of Episcopal church discover some traditional terminology to be arcane or confusing, so here s a bit of help: A is highest order of ordained ministry in church, in most ancient church traditions, is honored as a successor of first apostles gared by Jesus Christ. The oversees church s life in a particular geographic region, called a diocese. Our diocese once covered entire state retains historic name Diocese of California because it was here that Episcopal church first took root in California. The Right Reverend Marc Hley Andrus has served as of our diocese since July 22, 2006. A Cadral is central church of a diocese, where has his or her cadra, or chair, a symbol of s pastoral care oversight, teaching, preaching, administrative authority. A Dean is responsible for administration of Cadral has oversight of its day-to-day affairs. The Dean serves cadral s particular constituencies as s designate. The cadral s Board of Trustees exercises stewardship of its resources. A Canon residentiary is part of permanent paid staff of a cadral, often head of a department in organization. Canons residentiary may be responsible for maintenance of cadral s worship, pastoral care outreach, facilities, internal governance, etc., as a group, form cadral Chapter, which advises assists Dean of Cadral. About Today s Music Today, we continue with our survey of Medieval Music. We reprise Magnificat Nunc Dimittis from last week introduce a new anm Crist Sainte Marie written by Hermit-Saint Godric in early 1100 s. This piece, along with two or songs by Godric, is earliest known English text with musical notation. We also celebrate today birthday of J. S. Bach with two of his major organ works. The Prelude Fugue in E minor The Wedge is one of master s greatest work, so-called because subject of fugue, that is principal melody, forms a wedge shape on paper as intervals get wider wider. The Readings John 3:1-9 There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of Jews. He came to Jesus by night said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do se signs that you do apart from presence of God. Jesus answered him, Very truly, I tell you, no one can see kingdom of God without being born from above. Nicodemus said to him, How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into mor s womb be born? Jesus answered, Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter kingdom of God without being born of water Spirit. What is born of flesh is flesh, what is born of Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, You must be born from above. The wind blows where it chooses, you hear sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of Spirit. Nicodemus said to him, How can se things be? John 3:10-17 Jesus answered Nicodemus, Are you a teacher of Israel, yet you do not underst se things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except one who descended from heaven, Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up serpent in wilderness, so must Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send Son into world to condemn world, but in order that world might be saved through him. Serving assembly Homilist Readers Musicians The Right Rev.
