Jim McBurney O.S.A., to lead a Lenten Retreat on the journey of Lent as a call to conversion of heart. Fr. Jim is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine and is well known for his ministry as a spiritual director and retreat master. Our retreat begins this Monday night with our Novena Mass at 7 pm. and Fr. Jim s conference will follow after the novena prayers. On Tuesday, the retreat will begin with prayer at 7 pm. Please make every effort to attend the retreat and feel free to bring a friend. Let us continue to pray for one another. In Christ, Fr. Thomas The Journey of Lent: A Call to Conversion of Heart March 13-14, 7:00 pm with Fr. Jim McBurney, O.S.A. When we receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, we hear the words: Repent and believe in the Gospel or Remember you are dust and to dust you will return. The season of Lent calls us to remember who we are we are dust we are fragile and always in need of ongoing conversion and healing. How do we understand this call and what obstacles sometimes keep us from embracing the call to conversion? What is God s vision for us and for the world? Drawing on stories from Scripture, Fr. Jim will invite us to reflect on themes of conversion and compassion, calling us to a transformation of heart. Fr. Jim McBurney, O.S.A., has served in parochial ministry as both a Pastor and Parochial Vicar in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He presently resides at Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Bryn Mawr, PA. He has also served his Augustinian Community as a Vocation Director and Director of Formation. His present ministry includes offering days of recollection and retreats. He has been offering spiritual direction to religious, clergy, and laity for 15 years

Second Sunday of Lent, March 12, 2017 Page 6 St. Vincent DePaul Society St. Bartholomew Conference St. Vincent de Paul First Communion Project We have been partnering with our SVDP Pantry in Perth Amboy for a number of years for their annual First Communion Project. Low income families in the Perth Amboy area rely on the pantry for many needs. Some families that have children preparing to receive First Communion cannot afford Communion ou its and accessories for their children. The pantry provides these, based on dona ons from our local SVDP Conferences. If you can help with gently used First Communion ou its or other First Communion accessories, please bring them to church for the weekend of March 18. We will be in the narthex to collect them. As always, we thank you for your generosity. Spirit of St. Vincent The works of mercy affect a person s en re life. For this reason, we can set in mo on a real cultural revolu on, beginning with simple gestures capable of reaching body and spirit, people s very lives. This is a commitment that the Chris an community should take up, in the knowledge that God s word constantly calls us to leave behind the tempta on to hide behind indifference and individualism in order to lead a comfortable life free of problems. Jesus tells his disciples: The poor will always be with you (Jn 12:8). There is no alibi to jus fy not engaging with the poor when Jesus has iden fied himself with each of them. (Pope Francis, Apostolic Le er: Misericordia et Misera) About the Society The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an interna onal organiza- on of lay Catholics who organize into small working groups known as conferences. At this grass-roots level Vincen ans are engaged in person-to-person service with troubled persons and families in their immediate neighborhood. More info can be found on the na onal SVDP website, www.svdpusa.org. Our next monthly mee ng is on March 13 th at the Parish Center at 7:30pm. If you would like to learn more, please join us at our mee ng! If you have specific ques ons, please contact Debra Weydert at dweydert@comcast.net or see our webpage at h p://www.stbartseb.com/ministries/st-vincent-depaul.html. FOOD PANTRY NEEDS The monthly SVDP Food Collection will be held the weekend of March 18th & 19th after all of the masses. The pantry is in need of the following items: Paper Towels, Laundry Detergent, Dish detergent, bar soap, shampoo, mustard, box jello, tuna fish, canned ravioli, Ragu, Facial tissues, fruit juice (btls. & lunch packs), pancake syrup, cookies and treats.
