CLERMONT COUNTY Compiled by Charlotte Stewart; formatted by Nancy Mehaffie History On December 6, 1800, the Northwest Territory authorized the creation of Clermont County. The county took its name from the French phrase for "clear mountain." President Ulysses S. Grant was born in Clermont County and his birthplace is now the site of a state memorial operated by the Ohio Historical Society. Ohio Governor John M. Pattison also resided in the county. In 1797, Francis McCormick founded the first Methodist Church in Ohio at Milford. Many Clermont County residents played an important role in the Underground Railroad and helped runaway slaves find freedom in the North. 1 Clermont County, Ohio lies within the Virginia Military District, where Revolutionary War Soldiers received land in exchange for their military service. Situated on the Ohio River, the main route to the west, Clermont County is located on a major migration route. Records are complete from the inception of the county in 1800, three years before Ohio became a state in 1803. Descendants of Clermont County settlers are scattered throughout the world. 2 All Departments below are in the Clermont County Courthouse 76 S. Riverside, Batavia 45103-2602, (513) 732-7300, unless otherwise noted below. NOTE: The record dates below are from the earliest date to present time. Clermont County Clerk of Probate Court has marriage records from 1800, Birth / Death Records from 1851 and probate records from 1810. Vol. 1 & 2, Clemont Co., OH: lists Alexander Blair of Gloucester Co., NJ as a Vet. Says he came to Clemont Co., in 1785. (if his obit is correct, he did not immigrate to the US until 1783 by which time the Rev. War was pretty well over?) Riley's Helpmate of Many Tears, Leaving Him Grief Stricken Companions in wedlock for sixty-nine years, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrard P. Riley of this city, true to their marriage vow, were faithful to each other until parted by death. Mrs. Riley died Sunday morning at 2 o'clock, and thus was dissolved one of the longest periods of wedded life ever known in Grant County. Mrs. Riley was ninety years and four months old. Death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas J. Sherman, 735 Cassius Street, and followed a brief illness with pneumonia. Besides the aged husband, seven children survive, as follows; Mrs. Thomas J. Sherman and E.P. Riley of Marion; Mrs. Sara Bair of Appleton, Wis.; Charles Riley of Orlando, Fla. ; A.E. Riley of Griffin, Cal. ; Mrs. A.M. Stratton of Portland, Ore.; and Mrs. Carrie Swing of Cincinnati, Ohio. No brothers or sisters survive, Mrs. Riley having been the last member of her father's family. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of Mrs. Sherman, with Rev. J.F. Porter, pastor of the First M.E. church, officiating. Burial will be made in the IOOF. Cemetery. Mrs. Riley was born in Clermont county, Ohio. August 22, 1822, and her maiden name was Blair. She was married to G.P. Riley in January 1844, and had she lived until next month the couple would have been married sixty-nine years. Four years ago on the occasion of the sixtyfifth wedding anniversary, a very pleasant celebration was held at the Riley home here. Mr. and Mrs. Riley lived on Second Street. FATHER RILEY'S CAREER "Father" Riley, as he is known, has had an interesting career. He and his wife have been residents of Marion for about twenty-five years. "Father" Riley was for many years a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist denomination, and held charges in Illinois. He came to Grant county from Princeton, Ill, and became pastor of the Wesleyan church at Fairmount. Later he went to Ligonier, Ind. And then came to Marion. A little more than twenty years ago objection was made to Rev. Riley as a minister by the delegates of the quadrennial conference of the Wesleyan church because he, a civil war veteran, belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic. The G.A.R. is a secret society, and to all secrets Wesleyans are opposed. The outcome was that "Father" Riley was ejected from membership in the denomination, as he preferred to remain a member of the G.A.R., a patriotic organization, rather than in the Wesleyan denomination. "Father" Riley became locally famous several years ago by his organization of the "Boys' Brigade" in Marion. At one time this organization numbered as high as sixty members, and attracted much attention.

BIRTHS In 1856 an Ohio law was enacted, directing that everyone involved in births or deaths -- clergymen, doctors, midwives, etc., should keep a complete record of all births and deaths, and a yearly report of this information should be made to the assessor Compliance with the law varied: some counties, including Clermont, have a usable record of births and deaths for the first two years only, 1856 and 1857.

In 1867 the above law was repealed and a new law enacted changing the reporting period to quarterly and directing that the Probate Judge receive and record the reports. Since the 1867 law, records of birth and death are more complete. The original 1856-1857 birth and death record are in the records of the Probate Court.. The following were taken from those records. In the fall of the year 1802, Rev. John Collins came out from New Jersey to Williamsburg, and purchased of Gen. Lytle an entire survey of land, sufficient to make seven or eight good farms. The East Fork was the northern boundary of this land, from the mouth of Clover to within a quarter of a mile above the mouth of Ulrey's Run. There were four partners in this purchase, namely: John Collins, Cornelius McCollum, Isaac Higbee and Josiah Albertson. Albertson never settled on his share of the land. A part of it was leased, and it finally fell into the hands of his children. Early in the Spring of the year 1803, Collins, Higbee and McCollum moved out and divided the land. McCollum settled at the mouth of Clover; Higbee settled on the East Fork, below and adjoining McCollum; Collins settled on that part of the land nearest Ulrey's Run; his farm was called the "horseshoe bottom." Albertson's land was between Collins and Higbee. The settlement commenced in 1803 by Collins, Higbee and McCollum, was the beginning of what was long known as the Jersey settlement. It was sometimes called Collin's settlement. The first log schoolhouse erected there in was near the present grave-yard, and near what is now called the Bethel meeting House. Before 1807 the following heads of families lived within the school bounds of this school-house, without including any family west of Ulrey's Run, namely: Cornelius McCollum, Isaac Higbee, John Collins, Edw'd Doughty, Alexander Blair, John Drummond, James McIntosh, Robert Burnet, Thomas Cade, George Higbee, Michael Strickland, Widow Reeves, Jeremiah Foster, David White, John Jenkins, Edward Kinnan, Benj. Clark, Robert Loeds, Edward Barton, Robert Doughty, Daniel McCollum, Jesse Justice, and Thomas Page. These were all from the State of New Jersey, and in addition to these, there lived in said bounds, east of Ulrey's Run, William Simons, James Blackwood, Jos. Conn, Elia Gerard, Widow Henderson, a Mr. Mitchell, and a Mr. Sheppard. Blackwood was from Ireland; Widow Henderson from Virginia; and I do not remember where the others were from, if I ever knew. The people west of Ulrey's Run were not considered as belonging to the Jersey settlement in 1807, though a number were in the school boundary at that time. The heads of families were: Jacob Ulrey, Daniel Tegarden, William Jeffers, Jacob Kriss, Christian Husong, Daniel Husong, and Widow Winans, the mother of William Winans, the well-known, popular Methodist preacher. It is my impression that none of the families named, west of Ulrey's Run, were from New Jersey. Regular circuit preaching did not commence at the town of Bethel until 1810, though such preaching commenced at Collins' school-house as early as 1804-5, and many attended such circuit preaching that did not live within the school boundary. The Swing family, the Dole family, two or three families north of the East Fork, George Meal, Joseph Jackson and others, attended such circuit preaching. PENSIONERS Christopher Blair, Co.
