MARCH 2008 Page 3 Breese Council Basketball Team State Champions Congratulations to our Breese Council Knights basketball team for playing hard to bring home top honors, winning the Illinois State Knights of Columbus basketball tournament hosted by the Teutopolis Council on March 30 th. After a challenging Saturday afternoon game against the T- town older team, our Knights enjoyed the Saturday night camaraderie of their host brother Knights. Sunday however brought very stiff competition from the T-town younger team and an even tougher challenge from the Bartelso Knights team, but in the end our Breese Knights achieved a narrow victory. Our six member team consisted of brother Knights Zach Lammers, Chris Loepker, Cory Loepker, Luke Niemeyer, Eric Tschannen and Tyler Tschannen. Special Interactive K of C Web Site on Papal Visit to U.S. The Knights of Columbus has launched a new Web site aimed at keeping people up to date on Pope Benedict XVI s visit to the United States next month. The Catholic Cable Network EWTN is cosponsoring the site. The site, www.papaltrip.org, provides a variety of interactive items related to the popes itinerary, the history of the papacy and the United States, and also features regular news updates on the pope to allow people to familiarize themselves with this man and to follow the pope s journey to the United States more closely. We realize that there are far more people who would like to see the pope during this trip than will be able to do so, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. We hope that this site will allow people to better understand the pope before his visit, and to follow closely his activities in the United States. The site includes biographical information on the pope, links to his books and writings, a history of the popes and the United States, and news about the pope and his planned trip. The site will also feature prayers for the pope s trip, a blog, and live streaming coverage of papal events via EWTN. Pope Benedict will be in the United States from April 15 to 20, 2008, visiting New York and Washington, D.C. EWTN is the global Catholic television network based in Irondale, Alabama. Special Olympics Service Opportunity May 3 rd The Illinois Special Olympics Spring Games scheduled for May 3 rd have been moved from the SIU Campus at Edwardsville to the Highland High School. Brother Knights are needed as volunteers to help in various ways ranging from helping with track and field events to possibly distributing lunches or presenting awards. An information packet and a volunteer sign-up sheet will be available at the KC Hall Lounge bulletin board. The Knights of Columbus has an exceptional relationship with Special Olympics. The Illinois Knights of Columbus are the Gold Medal Sponsors of all the Spring Games being conducted. Through our volunteer efforts, we are certain to enhance and expand this cooperative strategy for the benefit of these wonderful athletes.
