Introduction This year, we welcome an assistant in English. Her name is Era. She is from India. This booklet is an introduction to her country. Thank you Era for visiting our school! Ms SOULARD

Where is India? India is in the South of Asia. It is a big country. It is between Bangladesh and Pakistan. New Delhi is the capital.

There are twenty-nine regions.

The flag of India (the Tiranga) is orange, white and green with a blue circle in the middle.

Languages There are two official languages : Hindi and English. There are twenty regional languages too. In Hindi, there is a special alphabet.

1 - Andhra Pradesh Andhra Pradesh is a big region next to Karnataka. It is in the south east of India. There are two capitals : Hyderabad and Amaravati. The official languages are Telugu, Hindi and English. There are forty-nine million six hundred and sixty-five thousand five hundred and thirty-three inhabitants (49,665,533).

2- Arunachal Pradesh Arunachal Pradesh is a little state in the north east of India. It is next to China (in the north) and Assam (in the south). The capital of the state is Itanagar. There are one million three hundred and eighty-three thousand seven hundred and twentyseven inhabitants (1,383,727). In Arunachal Pradesh, they speak Bengali, English and Hindi. There are two famous places : Tawang Monastery and the Golden Pagoda.

3- Assam Assam is a little region. It is in the East of India. Assam is between Nagaland and West Bengal. It is under Arimashal Pradesh. In Assam, there are thirty-one million two hundred and five thousand five hundred and seventy -six inhabitants (31,205,576). Assanese, Hindi and English are the official languages. Dispur is the capital. Kamakhya temple Navagraha temple

4- Bihar Bihar isn't big and isn't little. It is at the north east of India between Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The capital of Bihar is Patna. In Bihar, they speak three languages : Hindi, English and Maithili. There are one hundred and four million ninety-nine thousand four hundred and fifty-two inhabitants (104,099,452) in Bihar. In Bihar, there are two famous monuments : Mahabody temple and the Giant Buddha in Bodghaya.

5- Chhattisgarh Chhattisgarh is a big state in the middle east of India. It is between Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. In Chattisgarh there are twenty-five million five hundred and forty-five thousand one hundred and ninety-eight inhabitants (25,545,198). There are two official languages : Hindi and English. The capital is Naya Raipur. Two famous places are Chitrakote falls and Bhoramdeo temple.

6. Goa Goa is a little state at the West of India, on the Arabian sea. Karnataka is at the south east and Maharastra is at the North. In Goa, they speak Konkani, English, Hindi and Portuguese too! Pangi is the capital. It is summer all year long! There are one million four hundred and fifty-eight thousand five hundred and forty-five inhabitants (1,458,545). In Goa, there are beautiful places : Galangute beach / Bondla Wildlife sanctuary.

7 - Gujurat Gujarat is a big region at the west of India. It is between Rajasthan in the north and Maharastra in the south. It's between Pakistan in the West and Madhya Pradesh in the East. There are sixty million three hundred and eighty-three thousand six hundred and twenty-eight (60,383,628) inhabitants. They speak English and Hindi. The capital of Gujarat is Gandhinagar. There are beautiful monuments for example Laxmi Vilas Palace or the statue of Gandhi.

8 - Haryana Haryana is a little region in the north of India between Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The capital of Haryana is Chandigarh. There are twenty-five million three hundred and fifty-one thousand four hundred and sixty-two inhabitants (25,351,462). They speak Hindi and English. In Haryana, there is the garden of Pinjore and there is the Kingdom of dreams.

9 - Himachal Pradesh Himachal Pradesh is a little region. It is in the north west of India. It is next to Punjab. It is at the top of Uttar Pradesh and at the bottom of Jammu and Kashmir. In Himachal Pradesh there are six million eight hundred and fifty-six thousand inhabitants (6,856,000). The capital is Shimla. In this region, they speak Hindi and English. Mc Leod Ganj Monastery

10 -Jammu and Kashmir Jammu and Kashmir is a big region in the North of India. Himachal Pradesh is under Jammu and Kashmir. It is between China and Pakistan. There are two capitals : Srinagar in summer and Jammu in winter. They speak Urdu, Hindi and English in this region. There are twelve million five hundred and forty-one thousand three hundred and two inhabitants (12,541,302). In Jammu and Kashmir there are several famous monuments, for example Jamia Masjid Beerwah or Tiksey Monastery.

11. Jharkhand Jharkhand is a big state in the north east of India. It is next to West Bengal (in the east), Odisha (in the south), Chhattisgarh (in the west), Uttar Pradesh (in the north west) and Bihar (in the north). The capital of the region is Ranchi. In Jharkhand, they speak Hindi and English. There are thirty-two million nine hundred and eighty-eight thousand one hundred and thirty-four inhabitants (32,988,134). There are two famous places : Jagganatpur Temple and Maluti Temple.

12 - Karnataka Karnataka is a big state between Andrah Pradesh and the Indian Ocean. It is under Maharastra. It is at the top of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. There are three official languages : Hindi, English and Kannada. There are ( 61,095,297) sixty-one million ninety-five thousand two hundred and ninety-seven inhabitants. The capital is Bengaluru. There are two famous monuments: the Gol Gumbaz and the stepped tank.

13 - Kerala Kerala is a little state in the south of India. It is next to Tamil Nadu and it is under Karnataka. It is opposite Jammu and Kashmir(in the North) and Arimashal Pradesh (in the North East). The capital is Thiruvananthapuram. In Kerala they speak Hindi, English and Malayalam. Population : 33,406,061 There are beautiful places : Silent valley National Park and Tea Garden in Munnar.

14- Madhya Pradesh Madhya Pradesh is a big region in the middle of India. It is next to Rajasthan in the north-west, Maharastra in the south, Gujarat in the West, Chhattisgarh in the East and Uttar Pradesh in the north-east. There are seventy-two million six hundred and twenty-six thousand eight hundred and nine inhabitants (72,626,809). They speak Hindi, and English and the capital is Bhopal. 15- Maharashtra Maharashtra is in the middle of India. It is a big state and it is between six states : Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telongana, Karnataka and Goa. There are one hundred and twelve million three hundred and seventy-two thousand nine hundred and seventy-two inhabitants (112,372,972).The capital of the region is Mumbai. They speak Marathi in Maharashtra. There is a famous place : Raigad Fort

16- Manipur Manipur is a little state next to Assam and Burma. Negaland is at the top of Manipur. In Manipur, the population is of two million eight hundred and fifty-five thousand seven hundred and ninety-four (2,855,794). Imphal is the capital of Manipur. In Manipur they speak English, Hindi and Meitei. Tataihgunta Temple -> <- A buddhist temple

17- Meghalaya Meghalaya is a little state in the north east of India. It is between Bengladesh in the south and Assam in the north. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya. In this state, they speak Hindi, English, Kahasi and Garo. There are two million nine hundred and sixty-six thousand eight hundred and eighty-nine inhabitants (2,966,889). There are famous monuments, for example Elephant Falls or Church of Shillong.

18- Mizoram Mizoram is a little state between Tripura and Manipur. It is at the north east of India. In Mizoram there are one million ninety-one thousand and fourteen inhabitants(1,091,014). They speak English, Hindi and Mizo. The capital of the state is Aizawl. There are famous monuments : for example, Solomon s temple.

19- Nagaland Nagaland is a little state in the North-East of India. Nagaland is next to Assam and opposite Bengladesh. The capital of Nagaland is Kohima. There are one million nine hundred and seventy-eight thousand five hundred and two (1,978,502) inhabitants. They speak English and Naga There are beautiful monuments in Nagaland : Ujjayanta Palace

20- Odisha Odisha is a big region. It is at the east of India and next to the Bengal Gulf. The total population of Odisha is forty-one million nine hundred and seventy-four hundred two hundred and eighteen (41,974,218). Bhubaneswar city is the capital of Odisha. In Odisha, they speak Oriya, Hindi and English. The famous monuments are Surya Temple and Lake Chilika.

21 - Punjab Punjab is next to Himachal Pradesh. It is little. It is opposite Jammu and Kashmir. Punjab is on top of Haryana. There are twenty-seven million seven hundred and forty-three thousand three hundred and thirty-eight inhabitants in Punjab (27,743,338). The capital of Punjab is Chandigarh. They speak Punjabi, English and Hindi. The famous monuments are the Golden Temple in Amritsar and Chhabir zoo next to Chandigarh.

22 - Rajasthan Rajasthan is a big state in the North West of India. It is next to Madhya Pradesh. It is between Gujarat and Haryana. In Rajasthan, there are sixty-eight million five hundred and forty-eight thousand four hundred and thirty-seven inhabitants (68,548,437). In Rajasthan, they speak Hindi and English. The capital of Rajasthan is Jaipur.

23- Sikkim Sikkim is a little region in the Himalayas. It is in the North East of India between Nepal, Tibet, Butan and West Bengal. Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim. The famous places are Darjeeling Valley and tea culture. In the region, they speak English, Hindi and Nepali.There are six hundred and nineteen thousand inhabitants(619 000).

24 - Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu is in the south of India. It is a small state. It is between the Bay of Bengal(and Pondicherry) and Kerala. The capital is Chennai. There are seventy-two million one hundred and forty-seven thousand and thirty inhabitants (72,147,030). They speak three languages : English, Hindi and Tamul. There are beautiful places : Kodaikanal Lake and Brihadishwara Temples

25 - Telangana Telangana is a big state. It is in the south east of India. It is between Maharastra and Odisha. It is at the bottom of India. In Telangana, there are thirty-five million two hundred and eighty-six thousand seven hundred and fifty-seven (35,286,757) inhabitants. There are two languages : Telugu and Urdu. The capital of Telangana is Hyderabad. There are famous places : the palace of Falaknuma and Hyderabad palace of Chowmahalla.

26- Tripura Tripura is a little region in the north west of India. It is near Mizoram, Assam and Bengladesh. The capital is Agartala. In Tripura, they speak Bengali, English, and Kokborok. In Tripura, there are three million six hundred and seventy-three thousand one hundred and seventeen inhabitants (3,673,917). Ujjayanta Palace is a beautiful monument in Agartala.

27- Uttar Pradesh Uttar Pradesh is a big state in India. It is in the North and in the middle of India, between Bihar and Rajasthan. The capital of Uttar Pradesh is Lucknow. The official languages are Hindi and English. In the region there are one hundred and ninety-nine million five hundred and eighty-one thousand four hundred and seventy-seven inhabitants (199,581,477).The famous places are the Taj Mahal and Itmadud Mausolea in Agra.

28 - Uttarakhand Uttarakhand is a little region. It's in the North of India under Himachal Pradesh, on top of Uttar Pradesh. There are ten million and eighty-six thousand two hundred and ninety-two inhabitants (10,086,292). They speak Hindi and English. The capital is Derhadun. The famous monuments are the statue of lord Shiva and the temple next to River Ganges in Rishikesh.

29- West Bengal West Bengal is a medium state between Bengladesh and Jharkhand. It is under Sikkim too. There are ninety-one million three hundred and forty-seven thousand seven hundred and thirty-six inhabitants (91,347,736).The capital is Kolkata. They speak Bengali and English. There are several monuments in West Bengal, for example : Rasmancha Victoria Memorial
