H e r i t a g e Herald February 10, 2019 THIS WEEK: Dear Friends and Members, This week we had the carpet installers come. They were here all day Monday through Wednesday. When they were finished, the church interior looked warm and inviting. Now we await the arrival of the pew chairs, which are scheduled to arrive in April. Also, we have some other projects as we prepare for our 10th year anniversary of the Heritage B a p t i s t Theological Seminary which will be the newly carpeted foyer celebrated at our seminary s graduation this year on June 2nd. continued on page 2... ...continued from page 1 Our darling daughter Emily s funeral and memorial service was held on Monday morning at 10:30. The service was attended by her church family, relatives, and many friends of the family. Our friends came from great distances and were such a blessing and comfort to us. Following the service, a reception was held at the church, which was a wonderful time of fellowship. Emily s obituary can be viewed at: http://www.macphersonfuneralhome. com/obituary/emily-vigil Above: several young men and boys remove the old carpet from the platform after the Sunday evening service. for the discerning The Word Prevent For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head (Psalm 21:3). from God as well. In this Psalm, David recognizes the source of a king s power, and we would do well to remember that our strength and our benefits come directly However, this verse in English, along with the other uses of prevent, preventest, and prevented in our King James Bible might be a source of confusion to some when it is applied with today s definition, to hinder, rather than the original definition, to come before. The above verse certainly is not saying that God is hindering the actions of the king with blessings, but rather that God s blessings came before David saw success in his life. We can apply this to our lives as we count all the good in our days as originating from God. Word usage over time changes, and people are not always precise in word choice. The devil is the author of confusion, but with a little study and careful respect of context, we can get past these word/speed bumps. The wording in the KJV is a testimony to the diligence of the translators and especially to God s hand in preservation. Other passages to study on this include these verses: Job 3:12, 30:27, 41:11; Psalms 18:5, 18:18, 59:10, 79:8, 88:13, 119:147-148; Isaiah 21:14, Amos 9:10, Matthew 17:25, 1 Thess. 4:15. for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him (Matthew 6:8). - Brad Baldwin Member of Heritage Baptist Church MonthlyMemoryVerse victory But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 15:57 Notable Historic QUOTE: One kind of work leads to another, and labour is lightened by being diversified. - Charles H. from the P U L P I T Message by Dr. Caswell A. Reeves Life is in Jesus Christ Philippians 1:21 For most people, the meaning of life is living with good health or enough money to get along in a comfortable fashion. However, the Bible teaches: I. For to Me to Live is Christ (Philippians 1:21) A. Eternal Life (John 14:6) B. Bread of Life (John 6:35) C. Abundant Life (John 10:10) D. Resurrection and Life (John 11:25) II. For to Me to Die is Gain (Philippians 1:21) A. Death to Self Belief (John 1:4-13) B. Death to Self Control (1 Corinthians 15:31; 2 Corinthians 3:5) C. Death to Self Physical (Hebrews 9:27; 2 Corinthians 5:8) If you are saved, your life belongs to Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul said, I am a slave for Christ. He said that because he knew the ransom Christ had paid to set him free from his sin. He was willing to live for Christ. Real life is in Christ and living for Him. Have you committed yourself to Christ? 6 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage forever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart. Psalm 119:111 5
