INTRODUCTION The 2016 edition of Public Libraries in Louisiana: Statistical Report includes data gathered from all public libraries in Louisiana by the State Library of Louisiana using Bibliostat Collect. The report complies with the Federal/State Cooperative System for Public Library Data (FSCS). It is a comprehensive compilation of information about libraries, including: all money available to a library from all sources of funds, all expenditures made by the library, populations served, collections, services, and staff provided during the reporting year, and performance measures. The each table is arranged with the parishes listed in alphabetical order. A Louisiana Public Library Directors Telephone and E-mail Directory is included. In addition to the actual data reported, some performance measures have been calculated for each library. It is important to remember that performance measures and comparative statistics are not absolutes. No single measure tells a complete story, and there are not any right or wrong measures. An individual library s statistics should be considered in the context of its roles, goals, and objectives. Changes this year include the inclusion of retrieval of electronic information and reformatting the use data to be collection use, along with the indication of financially emancipated parishes on the financial pages. National data is cited from these sources: Institute of Museum and Library Services, Public Libraries in the United States, Survey, Fiscal Year 2015 (released September 2017), https://www.imls.gov/sites/default/files/fy2015_pls_tables.pdf Swader, Lorelle, ALA-APA Salary Survey 2014, Chicago, American Library Association-Allied Professional Association, 2014 (data available electronically only). Use of public libraries continues to rise with the increased importance that public libraries play in their communities. As federal and state agencies reduce the number of their offices, and use technology for providing services, public libraries fill a critical role in being the place for job seekers and people in need of social services to have access to computers. New technologies (such as wireless) provide new challenges in measuring use of library services, however. Current statistics do not completely reflect the increase in complexity and level of use of the modern public library. The most recent economic climate has demonstrated this. The State Library continues to support public libraries in the state to meet the new challenges facing us. If you are interested in additional statistical information, or in how to use statistics for planning and budgeting, or for assistance in analyzing the statistics and performance measures, please contact Library Development at the State Library. If you have any comments or suggestions about the format of the publication, contact Michael Golrick at 225-342-4917, email: mgolrick@slol.lib.la.us Rebecca Hamilton State Librarian iii
