Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Community October 22, 2017 Weekend Mass Schedule St. Michael s Liberty St., Penn Yan Confession 4-4:30pm Sat. 5:00pm Saturday 7:00am Sunday 9:30am Sunday St. Theresa s Route 245, Stanley Confession 10:30am Sun. 11:00am Sunday St. Januarius Route 21, Naples Confession 4-4:30pm Sat. 5:00pm Saturday 10:00am Sunday St. Patrick s, N. Main St. Prattsburgh Confession 7:30am Sun. 8:00am Sunday How did it go with the Bishop? If you had been coming to Mass over the last month or so, you would have been aware that our Bishop, Salvatore Matano was invited to OLOL last Sunday, 10/15. Your Liturgy* Committee did this so that he could help us celebrate the Year of the Eucharist, which he opened on the Feast of The Body & Blood of Jesus (6/18/17). It is also a jubilee year because it is the 150th anniversary of our diocesan church. The Year will close on 6/3/18. *Liturgy the work of the people in service to Christ whose presence, Body, Soul & Divinity, is in the consecrated Host, and who commands us to go and share the Good News of salvation by the example of our lives, lived in, with and through Him. Since last Advent at our larger worship sites, St. Jan s & St. Mike s, you have been offered the opportunity to spend time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament weekly. In recent bulletin articles Fr. Felicjan has helped us know why spending that time (in reflection of Jesus life, death and resurrection, adoring, being contrite, thankful and humble enough to ask for unmet needs (ACTS)) can help us, and all the rest of God s creation. Bishop Matano stressed this in his homily prior to the Benediction. He said in our busy, noisy world we need the quiet of adoration to let Jesus infuse and ignite us. The Bishop did suggest that we plan many more opportunities to celebrate, but recognized that these may be hollow opportunities, if proper teaching (catechesis) about what we are planning, and why, is not given. He did say this begins with engagement, through the priests and deacons, and me, in announcements, homilies and bulletin covers (and posts to the website and Facebook page). You then have this responsibility: to discuss and live this training in the domestic church of the family, worshipping at weekly Mass, participating in the events planned for the parish, fulfilling the Commandments (Exodus 20), the Beatitudes (Matthew 5) and performing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy through the example of your life. During the reception, graciously offered through the collaboration of the Catholic Daughters and the Knights of Columbus, the Bishop fielded many questions. Look for them and their answers in the upcoming bulletins. Patty

Word of Life Reading I: Isaiah 45: 1, 4-6 I have called you by name. Reading II: 1 Thessalonians 1: 1-5b We thank God for your faith! Gospel: Matthew 22: 15-21 Keep your priorities clear. In today's Gospel we hear proclaimed a profound teaching by Jesus on stewardship. What belongs to Caesar? What belongs to God? Christian stewards recognize that everything they have belongs to God. God created them, and God has claims on every part of their existence. They also realize that the sovereign is an institution whose nature and purpose is to promote the common good and protect the welfare of its citizenry. As long as it accomplishes this mission while treating every single person with deep respect, justice and compassion, it merits the steward's support and cooperation. Christian stewards know what belongs to the Lord, and they are better citizens when they live their lives according to His Gospel. Adults: : If you were to write a thank you note to someone or to a group who has helped you grow in faith, to whom would you write and what would you say? Children: In your young life, who has helped you know Jesus as a friend? Looking Ahead Reading I: Exodus 22: 20-26 Take care to be just, especially to widows and the poor. Reading II: 1 Thessalonians 1: 5c-10 Your faith is an example for others. Gospel: Matthew 22: 34-40 The great commandment. "You shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with your soul and with your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. Here is another occasion where Jesus' enemies asked him a question that was probably an ongoing debate, and they hoped his answer would alienate one side or the other, The real question is, are all of the commandments equal, or should they be prioritized? Jesus' answer is based on the important Jewish prayer, the Shema, which says we should love our neighbors as ourselves (and remember, with the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus redefined "neighbor" to include everyone, Luke 10:29-37). The second most important commandment. Evangelization World Mission Sunday Today is World Mission Sunday! We are invited today to reach out and help build the Church in Mongolia, the world s youngest Catholic Church, as well as local churches throughout the Missions, in the most remote areas across our world. Your prayers and generous gift to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the collection today help the work of priests, religious and lay leaders in Mongolia and throughout the Missions who offer the poor practical help and the experience of God s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Peace & Justice Respect Life Here & Now Hopefully you remembered your baby bottle with your offering today to celebrate CareNet in each of out worship sites. M a n y gifts of life will be aided by your do- n a t i o n to our local ministry to help strug- gling families. Your Social Ministry Committee thanks you. Fill Our Food Cupboards this October... The local food cupboards around OLOL always needs your help. When you see a buy 1 get 1 free think of those in need. For October they need: spaghetti & sauce, mac & cheese, canned veggies. Don t forget paper products, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, & paper plates. Let's fill our local food cupboard this month and every month in the collection boxes around OLOL. Support Fair Trade Month October is Fair Trade Month. At OLOL we support Fair Trade through Equal Exchange s Interfaith Coffee Program; offering coffee, tea, granola bars, cocoa products, and chocolate bars for sale. Equal Exchange products are grown using sustainable agricultural principles and purchased through worker-owned cooperatives. This allows the farmers to receive a fair and equitable price for their products and help a small grower support his/her family. St. Michael School Dinner Circle Fundraiser The Autumn Dinner Circles for St. Michael School is a month long event to give flexibility and convenience of hosting a dinner on any date in October (or anytime of the year.) You will get to know others in our parish community and support the wonderful traditions of St. Michael School. Simply invite some friends and family to your home for a warm meal and conversation. They donate $50 per guest that is given to the school. Interested? contact Carrie Tette at (315) 531-9212 or by email at carrietette@yahoo.com. The St. Jan's Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held Sunday November 12 from 3:30-5:30pm. This event is a continuation of the vision of Deacon Ed Sargent and Karl Warrington to welcome everyone in our community for food and fellowship. We would like to be able to get the word out to as many people as possible. If you are a member of any community organization and could distribute flyers to individuals or families, please let us know. We also need your help to sign up to bring food including cooked turkeys, hot vegetable dishes, cold salads, rolls and of course, DESSERT! Monetary donations are also welcomed. Also, we need your help with set up, serving and clean up. Check for the sign up sheet in the back of church or call Andy and Marianna Beigel at 585-374-6933. Takeout will also be available. See you there! Catholic Ministries Appeal Our parish goal for the CMA is $59,789, only the 3% minimum increase from last year. I want to thank you for your generous response in the past. The CMA funds many things that perhaps you do not know about but which serve you indirectly. Deacon Tim s education at St. Bernard s Institute was funded by the CMA. Our seminarian Jeff Maciejewski s education is paid for by the diocese via the CMA. I was looking up information about a project on the internet and picked up a malware that froze my computer. It was the diocesan help desk that freed up my computer. One troubling statistic about the CMA is only 30.84% of our parishioners participate. Any amount you can give will be appreciated: small amounts add up. If you have not received mailings from the diocese, please take one of the envelopes at the church doors, fill it out and either send it to the diocese or drop it into the collection basket. Again thank you for your Stewardship in helping the diocese help the parish do our work. Fr. Leo How Much Should I Pledge? This question each must answer for themselves. How much do you love Christ & His Church? Your pledge is your answer. ABCs of Stewardship C is for Commitment. It s not easy to become a steward. It takes daily practice and commitment. Learning to trust God and others is often what makes this commitment especially difficult. Time also plays havoc with the commitment to stewardship. I don t have time to do things I must do, so how can I squeeze out time for volunteering? Often, when I am beginning to create a change in my life, I need to establish a support system so that I am accountable not only to myself (I can accept about any excuse I create) but to someone else. I have a friend who will ask Did you do your two hours of volunteer work this week?
