Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School Hello St. Pius X / St. Leo Community members, I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend and pray that you all continue to have a blessed Lenten season. As some of you may know, St. Pius X / St. Leo school will be working with Madonna School and Community-Based Services starting the 2019-20 school year. I want to thank our community members who attended a town hall meeting recently where Jon Burt, the president of Madonna and myself met to talk about this partnership and why we are excited to begin this new venture and better support our students and teachers in fostering our students academic, social and spiritual growth. This partnership is an extension of what our school already does, which is to educate students with a wide array of learning needs. These needs include physical, learning, intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as the social-emotional needs of our students. Our purpose with this partnership, in which Madonna will help provide more resources for our school, is to improve the academic outcomes for all of our students, improve the social-emotional learning outcomes for our students as well as enhance our students faith formation and fulfill our school s Catholic mission. The resources that Madonna will provide our school, as well as St. Robert Bellarmine, include special education expertise, support, advisement, advocacy as well as being a liaison to community resources for our students. The school will also be able to greater provide our students and families more services to meet the needs of our students individualized plans and development as well as better provide our teachers with more extensive professional development and training. This is only a small snippet of information that was covered in our town hall meeting and I would be very willing to provide more information on this partnership with anybody who would like it and I encourage those people to reach out to me. Most importantly, as a Catholic school, this is what we are called to do. In 2017, the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) published the Exceptional Learner s White Paper: One Spirit, One Body. In this synthesis or call to action, the NCEA stated that We are many parts, but one body the body of Christ. Without explicitly finding ways to welcome students with disabilities in Catholic schools, a piece of that body is missing. The NCEA furthered that it cannot be enough to just recognize that Catholic schools should address the needs of students with disabilities and complain that we don t have enough resources but instead Catholic schools need to find viable ways to address the needs of those with disabilities. This partnership is doing just that. Alongside our friends at Madonna, we are establishing a common ground for collaboration in the development of effective avenues to provide resources to those with disabilities and ensuring that those with disabilities are full participants and experience belonging in Catholic schools. I am proud that the St. Pius X / St. Leo school s commitment to this calling and finding ways to strengthen how we serve our brothers and sisters. Peace and Lenten blessings. Cory Sepich, Principal St. Pius X/St. Leo School If you have children in grades Pre-Kindergarten (3-year-old program has a waiting list.) 4 year olds to Grade 8 that you are thinking about sending to our school for the next school year, please call our school office at 402-551-6667 to set up a time to come and visit, and, then register your child/ren when you decide to come to our school. In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman In today s Gospel, Jesus is questioned about various groups of people who were killed by great calamities. The people asking Jesus, are trying to justify their own sins, because they are thinking that those people were greater sinners and deserved the punishment. However, Jesus tells them, But I tell you if you do not repent you will all parish as they did! Jesus also teaches us how a gardener pleads with his master to give him a chance to care for a fig tree that is not bearing fruit. The symbol of the Fig Tree is you and I. Unless we reform our lives and allow the Lord to cultivate us and to bear fruit, we too will be cut down. Our reading from Exodus, Moses is drawn to a burning bush, and found himself in the presence of God. The Lord called Moses to rescue his people in Egypt. Moses, unsure how he going to do this, asks God, If they ask me, What is your name? What should I say to them? God replied, I AM WHO AM. tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you. Lent is the time for us to recognize our pride and arrogance, and to ask forgiveness for our sins. It is a time to answer our Lord, to save ourselves, our families, and our Church. Like a burning bush, God is calling us to change our lives and to be fruitful. To know and grow in our faith and be willing to proclaim what we believe. It is a time to recognize that Jesus is God incarnate and to recognize him as our King, our Savior, our Lord, and the great I AM.
