This is almost the same for my father's side for males, but there were more females that died from childbirth on my mother's side, lowering the average. The Edwards and Owens were from Wales and came to America in about 1735 living in Spotsylvania and Orange Counties in Virginia for a few generations. From there they moved to Kentucky and later to Clay, Andrew, and Holt Counties in Missouri. They were planters and a few owned slaves at one time. During the Civil War, they left Missouri for Nebraska City, NE where William Edwards worked as a blacksmith and Edwin Edwards was a teamster on the Santa Fe Trail and to California. After the war, Edwin and Mary moved down into Jewell County, KS where the family has farmed since. The Atkins also came to America in the 1700's from England and settled in Virginia, only farther down the Shenandoah Valley in Wythe County. Montgomery Freel Atkins was conscripted into the Confederate Army where he was a teamster. Captured June 5, 1864 north of Staunton, VA, he was sent to prison at Camp Morton, Indiana. In March 1865, he said, "They threw the gates open and we walked home, begg'en for grub as we went." He caught pneumonia and ended up in the Hospital in Richmond, VA. In 1882, Montgomery and Jane Atkins came west to Doniphan County, KS and on to Jewell County in 1893. He worked as a drayman. The Peters and Millers were of German descent. They came to America in the 1700's and settled in the part of Virginia that later became West Virginia (Monroe County). Henry Miller was a gun smith and learned the trade from a Mr. John Peters (who became his father-in-law). Peterstown, West Virginia was named for one of Mary's ancestors. The McKinneys and Reynolds were Irish and came to America because of the potato famine in Ireland. Alex worked as a sailor on the Great Lakes and married Annie Reynolds in Chicago, Il. When Alex broke his leg and it would not heal, the doctor told him to move to a dryer climate --- Strang, NE. They farmed until they lost everything to grasshoppers in 1874. They moved to Webber, KS and Mr. McKinney sold farm machinery. A daughter, Valentine McKinney, was born to them on Feb. 14, 1897 and Annie died in childbirth. Alex married twice after Annie's death. His third marriage was to the widow of Robert Edwards, Victoria Edwards. This makes my great-grandfather (RC Edwards) a stepuncle to the woman he married (Leona McKinney). Victoria Edwards McKinney ran a hotel at Webber, KS. The Gleasons came from England in the mid 1600's to Boston, Mass. and lived in this area for generations. George Gleason's parents died when he was young and he was raised by his uncle and aunt Torrey. They came west, first to Hancock Co., IL and then to Putnam Co., Missouri. George was a blacksmith. Roxie Gleason, the youngest of George and Mary's children went to Jewell County, KS to visit Griffin relatives and while there she met George McKinney. The Griffins had a bank at Webber and George McKinney worked there. Later, he worked his way up and ran the Webber Bank. After he retired, George McKinney moved to California to be near his children living there. My Tallent ancestor came to America in 1732 from London as an indentured servant or a convict and paid his debt with six years of labor on a plantation in Lancaster County, VA. His widow and sons
were in Anson County, NC by 1757 and our line migrated into Blount County, TN by 1820. Tennessee was a divided state during the Civil War and Benjamin Tallent served in the Union Army although much of the state was Confederate. He was a sawyer by trade, cutting trees for lumber. His son, Samuel Tallent brought his family to Republic County, KS after 1900. Samuel's wife Tennessee "Belle" was lighting a fire to heat the house one Sunday morning and was severely burnt. She was carrying a child at the time and lived with great pain for almost two months, till her daughter was born. Belle died shortly after she gave birth. Alice, the daughter, was raised by her oldest brother and his wife, Avery and Leona Tallent. Toley Tallent served in France during World War I. He was caught behind enemy lines for two weeks and hid in a wine cellar with nothing to eat but cheese. His son and my grandfather, Dale Tallent served in the Pacific during World War II in the Navy and Marines. Jesse Mc James was the youngest son of Jesse and Feby James and their only child born in America (Virginia). The James family came from Ireland just a few years before his birth in 1795. They moved down into Blount County, TN shortly after Jesse's birth. Alvin James served as a Justice of the Peace in Blount County, TN. All my ancestors on my maternal grandfather's mother's side were German. They probably came to Pennsylvania first and later moved down into Augusta and Rockingham Counties in VA. They all came west together in 1854 to Iowa and Keokuk Counties in Iowa. John Fry and Sarah Coffman had eloped and married at Harper's Ferry a year before coming west. Her parents were against their marrying. Henry Stoner and Catharine Wine married in Iowa County, IA. It was said that Henry had an "eye" for Catharine on the trip west. When John and Sarah Fry moved from Iowa to Pawnee County, NE, their son, John "David" stated his love for the young Margaret "Emma" Stoner. He said he would come back to Iowa and marry her. It took him five years to save up the money, but he was true to his word, and she waited for him. After their marriage in Iowa, David and Emma farmed in Pawnee County, NE until about 1904 when they moved to Republic County, KS. He is a member of the Brown County Genealogical Society and has helped compiled family tree books on the Schober, Wenger, Cashman and Tallent lines. Also, I received information and pictures from my grand parents, Donald and Betty Barnes and Dale and Elsie Tallent. My Grandmother, Elsie, has the dowry trunk of her grandmother, Roxie McKinney. It contains her family album. The late Floyd Howes of St. Joseph, Missouri compiled a history of the Edwards Family and all families connected with this line down to my g-grandfather, RC Edwards. George William Stoner of South English, Iowa compiled a book on the Wine and Stoner family in 1982.
