First Presbyterian Church 101 S. Center St., Marshalltown, Iowa 50158 Phone 641-753-5929 E-mail presmtwn@mchsi.com www.nivlac.org 9:00 a.m. August 4, 2013 O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever (Psalm 107:1, NRSV). We gather to worship in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Large print bulletins are available and children s bulletins are available on the table in the Narthex.

Those who are able are invited to stand. PRELUDE LIFE OF THE CONGREGATION LET US WORSHIP GOD TOGETHER Moment of silence to prepare your hearts for worship SONG OF DEVOTION (hymnal & screen) (remain seated) #384 Spirit Song (vs. 1) CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 11:4-7) Leader: The LORD is in His Holy temple; People: the Lord is on His heavenly throne. Leader: He observes everyone on earth; His eyes examine them. People: The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, He hates with a passion. Leader: On the wicked He will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot. People: For the Lord is righteous, He loves justice; the upright will see His face. INVOCATION Leader: Gracious Lord, let us see Your face and be strengthened to do Your justice on earth. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and guard us from the evil one. Enable our lips to praise You and our lives to give You glory. In Jesus name we pray. Amen SONGS OF PRAISE (hymnal, insert & screen) #431 Shine, Jesus, Shine As the Deer CALL TO CONFESSION (Psalm 140:6-8) Leader: I say to the Lord, You are my God. Hear, Lord, my cry for mercy. Sovereign Lord, my strong deliverer, You shield my head in the day of battle. Do not grant the wicked their desires, Lord; do not let their plans succeed. I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. Surely the righteous will praise Your Name, and the upright will live in Your presence Let us seek the mercy and deliverance of God by confessing our sins in silent prayer.

SILENT PRAYER PRAYER OF CONFESSION Unison: Merciful God, forgive our indifference to justice. We are often confused as to what is right in Your sight and fail to act. Help us to understand Your justice and live in Your righteousness. In Jesus name we pray. Amen ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Psalm 112:1-10) Leader: Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in His commands. Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever. Even in darkness, light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous. Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice. Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes. They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor. The wicked will see and be vexed, they will gnash their teeth and waste away; the longings of the wicked will come to nothing Sisters and Brothers in Christ, believe the good news: you are forgiven. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostle s Creed Unison: I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. GLORIA PATRI
