Worship Services October 30, 2011 8:30 and 11 a.m. 6:30 p.m. 1

Welcome We are very glad to have you worshipping our gracious God with us today. To Our Guests, We especially welcome you today! More information about our church is available in our Welcome Center, located through the doorway to the right of the high pulpit. You can also visit our website at firstpresaugusta.org. Children s Worship We offer a specially designed program for children in pre-k through fourth grade during the morning services. A leader will escort children from the sanctuary to their classrooms during the hymn of preparation. Parents are welcome to accompany them to observe where to pick them up after the service. Parents of children in pre-k through second grade are asked to pick up their children following Sunday School or the 11 a.m. worship service. Nursery Nurseries are provided for infants and toddlers during the worship services and Sunday School. We also provide a Mother/Infant Room equipped with audio located beside Nursery 1. Ushers are available to direct you. Spiritual Care If you would like to speak to someone about what it means to know Jesus Christ or you have any spiritual need or question, please use one of the prayer cards in the pew rack to contact one of our pastors. Our church elders are also available to speak with you. An elder will be standing next to the pastor following the service. Greeters These elders welcomed you as you entered the services today: David Whitcomb, Stan Smith, Matt Willis, Skip Wiggins... 8:30 a.m. Billy English, Bruce Van Peursem, Gerald Killian, Byron Morris... 11:00 a.m. Charlie Green, Michael Merwin, Phin Hitchcock, Mike Watts... 6:30 p.m. Prayer During the Services Each Sunday people gather in the Telfair Room during the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services to pray for the service, the pastor as he preaches and for those worshipping. All are welcome to participate. This week the prayer sessions will be hosted and led by the Evans Parish at 8:30 a.m. and the Belair Parish at 11 a.m. As stewards of God s resources, we try not to print an excess of bulletins. We invite you to bring this bulletin with you when you return for the evening service. 2

Reformation Sunday Theme: Grace Alone ( Indicates the congregation standing) The Prelude - Almighty, Infinite God....Merrick Chancel Choir Almighty, infinite God. Glory be unto your name. Hear us: we offer our praise to the One who is ever the same. You sent your light to our darkness; Breaking the chains of our sin. Quenching our thirst for your presence; Creating a new heart within. Worthy is your name, O Lord Most Holy; Worthy is your name in all the earth; Honor and blessings, glory and power And praise to our God. When we come to the end of our journey, In eternity s fellowship sweet; Forever we ll sing of your glory Casting our crowns at your feet. Welcome & Announcements... Rev. John Franks The Peace The Call to Worship...John 1:1, 14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, And the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, Who came from the Father. Jesus is full of grace and truth! The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Let us worship God! 3

The Hymn of Praise - A Mighty Fortress Is Our God... Ein Feste Burg (All Verses) Martin Luther; based on Psalm 46; 1529 4

The Invocation (Please lift hands) The Confession of Faith... Heidelberg Catechism, #21 What is true faith? True faith created in me by the Holy Spirit through the gospel is not only a knowledge and conviction that everything that God reveals in his Word is true, but also a deep-rooted assurance that not only others, but I too, have had my sins forgiven, have been made right with God, and have been granted salvation. These are gifts of sheer grace earned for us by Christ. Gloria Patri (Sung by All)...Greatorex Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. The New Testament Lesson... Ephesians 2:1-10 page 1818 and in the pew Bible The Response The grass withers and the flowers fall, But the Word of our God stands forever. The Personal Confession of Sin The Confession of Sin (Please kneel if able to do so) O gracious and loving Father, your majesty is beyond full description, your glory more than our sinful eyes could withstand to see, and your holiness fills the heavens. Yet, your mercy pursues us in dark and guilty places, your grace unveils our faces, and your holiness reaches down to where we are, transforming us into instruments of your redeeming love. We marvel that you would use us. May we never cease our wonderment at your amazing grace. May we be always bold and broken, as we seek to lead others into your truth. Forgive us, Lord, our sins, which are many. Melt the icy casualness with which we approach you. Purge the love of our favorite sins. Enflame a single passion for your glory in our lives. Create a deep hunger within us, and satisfy that longing with more of your Son, the only Savior we need, Jesus Christ. Amen! 5

The Assurance of Pardoning Grace (Sung by All)... In Christ Alone Keith Getty, Stuart Townend 2001 Thankyou Music 6

The Pastoral Prayer and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. The Offering* (Please take a moment to sign the attendance register.) The Offertory - Let All the World...Scott Let the peoples praise you, O God, Let all the peoples praise you. O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: For you will judge the world in righteousness And govern the nations of the earth. Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King. The heavens are not too high, His praises there may fly; The earth is not too low, His praises there may grow. The church with psalms must shout, No door can keep them out: But above all the heart must bear the longest part. (Psalm 67:3-5; George Herbert, 1593-1633) *Online giving is available at firstpresaugusta.org and at the giving kiosk in the Narthex. 7

All the shameful things That make me want to run Leave me undone, leave me undone. But, Oh the precious blood of Jesus Washes away like a river that runs. Oh the precious blood of Jesus, Falling down in love, Oh the precious blood. I once feared the sins, Cursing me to death. Now I have rest, now I have rest. My own righteous way Was worthless at the best. Now I have rest, now I have rest. Oh how I trust the flow that makes me white as snow. Here is my hope and peace, comfort, security. 2011 Music and Words by Kirk Sauers 15

The Lord s Supper - Marvelous Grace The Bread Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt! Yonder on Calvary s mount outpoured, There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled. Grace, grace, God s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin. The Cup Dark is the stain that we cannot hide. What can avail to wash it away? Look! There is flowing a crimson tide, Brighter than snow you may be today. Grace, grace, God s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin. Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, Freely bestowed on all who believe! You that are longing to see his face, Will you this moment his grace receive? Grace, grace, God s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin. Words by Julia H. Johnston, 1911 Music by Daniel B. Towner, 1910 The Prayer of Great Thanksgiving Benediction CCLI License Number 425646 19
