OCTOBER 17/18, 2015 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 2 THE THEME The scriptures present a leader who must suffer and serve others. The disciples were certainly slow learners, as we hear in today s Gospel. But who can blame them? Few of us are willing to rush headlong to the back of the line or to embrace lives of suffering and service. We may not be called to suffer like Jesus or the disciples. But we are called to serve. THE READINGS ISAIAH 53:1-11: The servant gives his life for others. HEBREWS 4:14-16: Jesus shares in our suffering. MARK 10:35-45: Jesus followers must be servants. -SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24th, 2015 5:00 PM Mass Priest Fr. Peter Deacon A. Griffin Lector S. Miller E.M. s A. Bagnoli, C. OCTOBER 17/18, 2015 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Peter s Desk 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: The Scripture readings today describe leadership as the service of others and offer Jesus as the best example. They explain the servant leadership of Jesus pinpointing service and sacrifice as the criteria of greatness in Christ s kingdom. The first reading is a messianic prophecy, taken from the Fourth Servant Song in the second part of the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. The Servant of the first reading intercedes with God for the people, taking upon himself their wrongdoings and accepting the punishment their sins have incurred. This passage speaks of the servant as giving his life as an offering for sin. The prophecy was realized in Jesus who lived and died for others. The second reading from the letter to the Hebrews, notes that Jesus responded to the call of his Father and became the mediator or priest for the people. The reading speaks of a high priest who is able to sympathize with us in our weakness because he has been tested in every way, though sinless, and so we can confidently hope for God s mercy. Today s gospel lesson explains how Jesus accomplished his mission of saving mankind by becoming the Suffering Servant and challenging his followers to become great by serving others: Whoever wishes to be great must be a servant. In the time of Jesus, ransom was the price paid to free someone from slavery. Sometimes the ransomer offered himself as a substitute for the slave. Jesus death on the cross was just such a liberating offering made for mankind. The slavery mandated by Jesus is a loving service of liberation for others. Today we are challenged to give our lives in loving service to others. We are challenged to drink the cup of Jesus by laying down our lives in humble and sacrificial service for others just as Jesus did. All Souls Day: Monday, November 2, is All Souls Day. It is a day devoted to the remembrance of our deceased loved ones. We invite everyone to attend either the Lazarus Mass on Nov. 1st at 10am or the 9am Mass on November 2nd. To include our deceased loved ones at these Masses and the Novena of Masses for the nine days following, please return the All Souls envelope that was included in your collection envelope packet or use one of the envelopes located where you obtain the bulletin. God Bless You Always, Fr. Peter STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection All discipleship involves mission. The bishops pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us, Every member of the Church is called to evangelize, and the practice of authentic Christian stewardship inevitably leads to evangelization.
