On Sunday, October 26, Cardinal Francis George presented the annual Christifideles Awards during a special ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral. Among the recipients was St. Luke s own Denise Murray. Denise was discerned for this honor by our Parish Pastoral Council and confirmed by Father Ken as someone who generously puts her faith into action for the good of the parish in many ways. Most notably, Denise has been our Coordinator of Liturgical Environment and Art for the past several years, planning and placing beautiful flowers, banners, candles, and other decorations to mark each liturgical season in a special prayerful way. Denise has also served on the Parish Pastoral Council, including a term as chairperson. She is a catechist for the Children s Liturgy of the Word, a Communion minister, and our parish advocate for Marriage Encounter. Our entire St. Luke community joins in congratulating Denise on this very special and well-deserved honor. God bless you, Denise! It was a perfect fall day for the St. Luke Women s Club to kick off their new year with a fun evening of Cocktails and Cabaret on Friday, October 24. The Szurko Trio provided a lively musical backdrop while some chic vendors turned Waldron Hall into a fashion boutique! 4 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL 60305-1835

The time commitment for this event is about an hour and a half. If interested, please email Janet Crosswhite at jcrosswhite@stlukeparish.org. For several years now, St. Luke Youth Ministry has sponsored Summer Service Trips for our high school students. For one week the teens travel to a service site in Appalachian regions of Pennsylvania and West Virginia and donate their time repairing homes, organizing food for needy families, and other similar projects. They share this experience with peers and reflect together on the role of service in our lives as Christians. In order for this to happen again next summer, adult volunteers are needed now to commit themselves to conduct the planning and preparation activities and to recruit adult chaperones for the trips. The only way these trips can continue is for adult volunteers to step up to do the leg work. If you are interested or would like to learn more, please contact Trip Coordinator Patti Muldoon at 708-699-5456 or pmuldoon67@sbcglobal.net. If you are new to our church or just visiting, please stop and introduce yourself. We are happy to have you share in today s celebration of the Eucharist. If you do not have a church home, we invite you to become a part of our parish family. Our church is open to anyone looking for a spiritual home. To register as a parishioner, please call the rectory at 708-771-8250 on any weekday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. NOVEMBER 9, 2014 The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica 5

Below are a couple of scenes from our October 28 trip to Kendall College, where we enjoyed some delightful fare prepared by the talented students in the School of Culinary Arts. Father Szmyd came to 1st grade to explain the Sacrament of Baptism. The students learned all the basics of this sacrament: that Baptism is for the forgiveness of sins, that we are baptized as Jesus was for God, that Baptism makes us a member of the church, and that we acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. The students then acted out the parts of parents and godparents with an infant doll to see how a baby s Baptism is celebrated. ShutterStock Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00-10:45 am Children under 3 are invited to come and play with other children their age in a pre-school classroom while moms and dads get to meet some new friends! Enter through School Door No. 1. In her funeral liturgies, the Church encourages us to walk and weep as Jesus did at the death of his friend Lazarus. We walk and weep when we bring the remains of our loved ones to the church for the funeral Mass and when we bear those remains to their final resting place. Our grieving and our tears do not belie our faith in the power of the Risen Lord. No, when we weep, we express our sense of loss and the sorrowful break that death imposes on us. More importantly, our mourning speaks to the incompleteness of our journey homeward to God. This grieving is like all the sacraments that are celebrated while we are on the way but not yet arrived. And so our sorrow then becomes a seed of hope and expectation that the Lord, forever true to his promise, will come with glory for his people and complete our journey POPE FRANCIS VISION OF HEALING AND COMMUNION The ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO in partnership with L OYOLA P RESS.
