Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church If you are a visitor, please know of our delight in having you in our midst. Join with us in the praise of God and at the Lord s Table. We have a practice of open communion inviting all baptized Christians to share in Holy Communion. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. If you are without a church home, please return and worship with us regularly. Children are always welcome in our worship. A quiet nursery is available at the back of the sanctuary if parents need a place to take their young children during the service. Please take a moment to complete your attendance slip, -- to be placed in the offering plate. Visitors, please provide your mailing address so we can acknowledge your presence. Members, please provide any updates or changes to your contact information. The Lord s Supper We believe that the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine in Holy Communion, and that through this gift we receive forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation. We invite you to come to the Lord s Table to receive this gift. Both wine (dark) and grape juice (light) are offered as well as gluten free wafers (please ask the Pastor for one at communion). Those unable to come forward should mention this to an usher so the pastor may serve you in your pew. Bring a Friend INVITE someone to worship with you. Being a disciple is important! Someone you know needs the Lord s power and a place to worship and serve. In your circle of influence, be an influence for Jesus Christ. Your invitation can change a life! JOIN US: Our CLC family of faith cordially invites to become a member (full, associate or seasonal). Become an integral part of our growing membership. Mark your attendance slip or call the office for more information. 843-785-5560. Prayer Requests Prayer request cards are located in the pew racks. You may include someone in today s prayers, by speaking the name as prompted during that portion of the service. You may also fill out a blue prayer card and place it in the offering plate for a name to be included in the prayer team s weekly prayers and/or the Sunday Bulletin -- Or email your request to our office at info@clchhi.com by Tuesday noon of that week. THE CONGREGATION IS INVITED TO RESPOND WHERE PRINT IS IN BOLD AND MARKED WITH A C The warnings are plentiful and blunt on the third Sunday in Lent. Lent is a season of repentance. Cut it out or get cut down! The warnings are accompanied by God s invitation to attentiveness: Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. The landowner s ultimatum is forestalled by the gardener s readiness to till the ground one more year. That is good news for all of us. Thanks be to God! CALL TO WORSHIP Abide With Me / When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Bell Choir WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING SONG All Who Are Thirsty All who are thirsty All who are thirsty All who are weak All who are weak Just come to the fountain Just come to the fountain Dip your heart in the stream of life Dip your heart in the stream of life Let the pain and the sorrow Let the pain and the sorrow Be washed away Be washed away In the waves of His mercy In the waves of His mercy As the deep cries out to deep, we sing... As the deep cries out to deep, we sing... Come, Lord Jesus come (x4) Come, Lord Jesus come (x6) As the deep cries out to deep, we sing... Come, Lord Jesus come CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (please stand as you are able) P Let us stand together as we are able, confess our sins in the presence of God and one another, and hear God s promise of forgiveness. C Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image, through Jesus Christ, the true light of a dark world. AMEN P Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, does not desire the death of sinners, but rather that they may turn from their wickedness and live. Therefore, we implore him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do on this day, that the rest of our life may be pure and holy, and that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. C AMEN. - 2 -

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY (said in unison) Eternal God, your kingdom has broken into our troubled world through the life, death, and resurrection of your Son. Help us to hear your word and obey it, and bring your saving love to fruition in our lives, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. (please be seated) FIRST READING: Isaiah 55:1-9 To those who have experienced long years in exile, the return to their homeland is a celebration of abundant life. God calls them into an everlasting covenant of love. Those who return to the Lord will enjoy new life and forgiveness, because God s ways are not our ways. Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 63:1-8 (read responsively) LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, that I might behold your power and your glory. For your steadfast love is better than life itself; my lips shall give you praise. So will I bless you as long as I live and lift up my hands in your name. My spirit is content, as with the richest of foods, and my mouth praises you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the night watches. For you have been my helper, and under the shadow of your wings I will rejoice. My whole being clings to you; your right hand holds me fast. - 5 -

SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 Paul uses images from Hebrew story and prophecy to speak the truth of Jesus Christ: He is our rock, our water, our food, and our drink. Christ is the living sign of God s faithfulness. I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not become idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play. We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must THE LENTEN VERSE (please stand as you are able) not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. And do not complain as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come. So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. GOSPEL: Luke 13:1-9 Asked about current tragic events, Jesus turns a lesson about whether suffering is deserved into a hard call to obedience. He then tells a parable that holds out hope that the timeline for ultimate judgment will be tempered by patience. P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 13 th chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. [Jesus] asked them, Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than - 6 - all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell

you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did. Then he told this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil? He replied, Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down. P The Gospel of the Lord C Praise to you, O Christ. (please be seated) CHILDRENS MESSAGE Pastor Emil Klatt THE SERMON ARE WE GOODNESS SAKERS, OR DOERS OF THE WORD? Pastor Emil Klatt (please stand as you are able) SONG OF THE DAY By Grace We Have Been Saved / North American traditional THE APOSTLES CREED (said in unison) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. - 7 -

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P Led by Christ in our journey of repentance, and moved by his compassion, let us pray for the Church, those in need, and all of God s Creation SUNG RESPONSE After each portion of the prayers: P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. (REPEAT SUNG PRAYER RESPONSE BEFORE FINAL PRAYER) P Into your hands, God of abundant grace, we commend all for whom we pray. Receive our prayers and grant us your mercy, in the name of the crucified and risen one, Jesus Christ our Savior. C AMEN. THE PEACE (We may greet one another in the name of the Lord) P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. THE RETURNING OF GIFTS (please be seated) THE RETURNING RESPONSE (please stand as you are able) - 8 -

THE RETURNING of GIFTS PRAYER (said in unison) God of abundance, we return to you from the gifts which you have first entrusted to us, and with them our very lives. Through these gifts, help us to bless the lives of others in the strength of your holy name. AMEN. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. C and also with you. P Lift up your hearts C We lift them to you, Lord P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God C It is right to praise you, Lord. P As we come again to this table, we recall the story. It was a night of celebration and also betrayal, when Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying, "When you eat this bread, and remember me, you become one in my body." In the same way, he took the cup after supper saying, "My very lifeblood will be poured out. But when you drink this cup, and remember me, I will be in you." C Come, Holy Spirit, Come. P Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking, that our eyes might be opened, that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. C AMEN. THE LORD S PRAYER (said in unison) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. AMEN. - 9 -

INVITATION TO COMMUNION P This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. C Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. AMEN. (please be seated) THE DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION All baptized persons who believe in the real presence of Christ in our Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins are welcomed to commune. The elements will be received by Intinction. You will receive the Host from the Pastor; move to the chalice bearer to dip a portion of the Host in the wine. Grape juice is available as an alternative to the wine in the second chalice. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Let an usher know if you need the Pastor to serve you communion in your seat. Our sixth year of participating in the Birdies for Charity fundraiser kicked off on March 1! Your support over the last five years has made it our most successful fundraiser each and every time. The Birdies for Charity is sponsored by the Heritage Classic Foundation associated with the RBC Heritage. From now until April 21, you can make a per birdie pledge or a flat donation. Every donation will be matched with an additional 15% by the Heritage Classic Foundation. It's so easy to do. Simply go to www.heritageclassicfoundation.com and click on Donate Now. Or you can fill out a pledge form in the Narthex and Janet Betts from the Preschool will take it from there. Won't you please help us again this year? Our goal is 600 pennies pledged. This year we hope to replace many worn, well-loved toys and manipulatives that either are too far gone to use or have too many missing pieces to make it functional for the classroom. The residual amount will be placed in our scholarship fund for additional families that may join during the year and need assistance. Thank you in advance for your generosity. OUR CLC LENTEN DISCIPLINE FOR 2019 Have you taken your Spiritual Gifts Assessment yet? As you look at the variety of ministry opportunities here at Christ Lutheran Church, do you wonder where you are best suited to serve? Do you hold back from volunteering, unsure of your gifts and how best to use them? Even those of you who are only with us on the island for a short time are invited to take part in this assessment and perhaps engage in ministry when you are among us. In 1 Peter 4:10, we are told "Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received." To find out what gifts God has given you, we invite you to take the Spiritual Gifts Discovery Assessment. This only takes about 10 minutes of your time! Please be straightforward with your answers. When you take this assessment online, your results will go into our system so that we can help you make the connection between your gifts and areas of service in our ministry. By the end of Lent, we would like to have you all in our system so we can help you to use your God given gifts! Please take the assessment! Once you complete the assessment, you will also receive your results via email. Plus, to help you understand your gifts and how to use them when you finish the assessment, you can download a profile sheet for each of your gifts on the website. If you are not comfortable doing this online, paper copies are available in the narthex. Just fill it out and return it to the office. - 15 -
