THE CROWN

RENEW MY CHURCH PART II I am excited that on February 28 we had 150 people come to our Town Hall Meeting for Renew My Church. This was double what I thought the attendance would be. It was a lively meeting with a lot of positive energy. We heard about how our Church has changed and what prompted Cardinal Cupich to start Renew My Church (RMC). There are 90 some groupings of parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Our grouping includes St. Barbara in Brookfield. St. Louise de Marillac in LaGrange Park, Divine Providence here in Westchester, along with ourselves. In the past I have written about the three themes of RMC: Make Intentional Disciples out of our faithful. This entails evangelization at every level. 2. Building Communities. We want vibrant parishes and schools that will attract people. 3. Inspire Witness. We need to excite others about our faith. With this as an overarching theme we learned of diverse ways this goal could be achieved given some of our limitations with both many fewer priests, and many people who have stopped coming to church. Some areas have already decided to combine two or three parishes into one while keeping the churches open for worship. Others have made their schools more vital by creating a new school where there were two that were not making it. We need to honestly look at ourselves and see what we can do to be more vital and successful. I introduced our parish grouping representatives. There is myself and our school principal along with three parish representatives and two school reps. The names and contact information of our Grouping Feedback and Discernment Team (GFDT) are listed below. Feel free to contact us with questions or suggestions. Father Mike Ahlstrom mahlstrom@archchicago.org (708) 865-8071 Deacon Jim Sponder deaconjimsponder@att.net (708) 865-8071 Rose Gutierrez mrgutierrez@comcast.net Al Castillo acastillo@archchicago.org Len Gramarossa, School Principal lgramarossa@comcast.net (708) 865-0122 Peggy Perry Peggyperry03@aol.com Sermethia (Samantha) Houston Shouston929@sbcglobal.net By the time you read this our GDFT will have met and begun to discern our own situation both at DI and the other three parishes in our grouping. I will share with you some of the results of this discernment session in the March 18 bulletin to help you prepare for our next town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, March 21. This will be an extremely important meeting to look at possible positive changes to make us a better Church. Please plan to be there. Ministry of Consolation and Compassion A ministry I want to begin at Divine Infant Jesus is the Ministry of Compassion and Consolation. It is very much needed. Who are these ministers and what do they do? They comfort those that mourn. Whether being present after losing a loved one, helping a family plan the funeral liturgy, or following up to see how they are doing, they are showing compassion in a time of great need. Right now no one is doing this but our priests and deacon. Their time is very limited. We will have two days of training on Saturdays April 7 and 14. Please ask our Lord if he may be calling you to this ministry. Please call me at 708-865-8071 to get more information or find out if this ministry is for you. Let me know if you are aware of someone who would be good at this who may need some more encouragement. Father Michael Ahlstrom Administrator, Divine Infant Jesus

PARISH MISSION Again this year we will have a combined parish mission with the 4 churches in our Renew My Church grouping. Our grouping consists of Divine Infant, Divine Providence, St. Louise de Marillac, and St. Barbara. Here is the schedule: BAPTIZED Giacomo, son of Oronzo and Carla (Viteri) Mendrano Tuesday, March 13, 7pm at St. Louise de Marillac. Fr. Michael Knotek will present Inspiring Witness. Tuesday, March 20, 7pm at Divine Providence. Fr. Tim Fiala. Lenten Reconciliation Liturgy. This will be the only Lenten Reconciliation Liturgy. Please mark your calendars and make every effort to join in this Mission. Not only will it be a good way to keep Lent, but it will be an excellent way to get to know the people of the parishes in our grouping. COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUPOPE Thank you for your generous contributions last week to the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe! As a parish, we collected $787.00 to help restore the Church and build the future in over 25 countries. If you missed the collection, it s not too late to give, visit www.usccb.org/ nationalcollections, and click on the How to Give link on the left. EARLY BULLETIN SCHEDULE Articles for the March 25th bulletin must be in the office by Thursday, March 15th. Articles for the April 1st bulletin must be in the office by Thursday, March 22nd. Articles for the April 8th bulletin must be in the office by Wednesday, March 28th. LAETARE SUNDAY Today, the Fourth Sunday of Lent is also called, Laetare Sunday meaning to have joy, to rejoice. Laetare comes from the Latin translation of the Entrance Antiphon, Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be joyful, all who were in mourning; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast. (Is 66: 10-11) While we still continue our Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, Laetare Sunday is a reminder that Lent is both a time of repentance and one of joy. We look forward to Easter, the Resurrection of the Lord, the baptism of Catechumens and the renewal of baptismal promises for the faithful. This joyful anticipation of the pinnacle of the Liturgical Year is reflected in the prayers of the Mass. In the Collect, we pray that with prompt devotion and eager faith, the Christian people may hasten toward the solemn celebrations to come. After Communion we ask God to illuminate our hearts, with the splendor of your grace that we may always ponder what is worthy and pleasing to your majesty and love you in all sincerity. During the Concluding Rites, the Prayer over the People repeats the joyful tone, asking God to give life by your unfailing light to those who walk in the shadow of death, and bring those rescued by your mercy from every evil to reach the highest good. To help express the feeling of joy during the celebration of Mass, we may use more musical instruments, decorate the altar with some flowers and rose-colored vestments may be worn. Let us mark this half-way point of Lent just that way, celebrating Laetare Sunday with hearts and minds rejoicing for the joy that is to come with song, prayer and the wearing of the rose! ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Department of Parish Vitality and Mission Dear Friends in Christ, January, 2018 On behalf of the Archdiocese of Chicago and our brothers and sisters who have been severely affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the earthquakes in Mexico, I want to sincerely thank you for the tremendous outpouring of support you have shown them during this challenging time. As a donor to the 2017 Natural Disaster Relief Appeal, your gift of $1,701.42 was used in its entirety for the charitable purposes of Catholic Relief Services relief and support efforts in Mexico and Catholic Charities USA s emergency relief and support efforts in Puerto Rico. To date, relief efforts have focused on providing emergency housing, food, water, cleaning supplies, clothing, and repairing damaged homes. You helped us raise over $250,000 during this appeal, answering Cardinal Blase J. Cupich s call respond the cry of those in need with both prayer and action. Please note that IRS rules require that values claimed for income tax purposes are the sole responsibility of the donor. On behalf of all of the beneficiaries of the Natural Disaster Relief Appeal, please accept our gratitude for your support. My sincerest thanks, Fr. Peter Wojcik Director, Parish Vitality and Mission AISLE OF GIFTS NEW GIFT BOOTH The Aisle of Gifts New Gift Booth is in need of items. Anything brand new never used. Gifts received you cannot use we will be happy to take from you, perfumes, jewelry, purses, lotions, stationary items, toys, clothes, crafts, tools, bath and kitchen items. We will be glad to pick them up or you can drop them off. Call Jeanine Dent 708-681-1128 or Barbara Calabrese 708-343-3908. Please do not leave items in the vestibule of the church. LENT, 2018 LET S IMITATE JESUS Forget giving-up yummy things that you ll go back to anyway once Easter comes! How DID Jesus begin Lent? He went to the desert. So as children of the Father in Heaven, let s imitate our brother Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit where He wants to lead us instead of planning Lent for ourselves. As a DI COMMUNITY we will collect DIAPERS for the Lagrange Women s Shelter. Bring them to the RE Office any time during Lent. COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY The people of God forgot the covenant and flouted God's laws. They did not listen to the prophets among them, who spoke for God in warning them. Prophets are sent from God to remind us why we are here, but they are often, even in our own time, mocked, disregarded, and mistreated rather than thanked and listened to. The book of Chronicles tells the results of these sins: the destruction of the temple and all of Jerusalem, murder, mayhem, and finally exile to a foreign land. Why are these stories in the Bible? Just to inform us of what happened to our ancient forebears? What good would that be unless there were a message and a warning for us as well? Are we people who follow the teachings of God, who obey the words of Christ in the second covenant in his blood? Or do we continue to wreak works of darkness and violence? We are reminded by these readings that we will be judged as a people, not just as individu als. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

VINCENT DE PAUL The Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday concerns itself with what has become a traditional threepart Lenten exercise: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Jesus instructs his followers to turn to God, to turn from self-interest and to deepen their relationship with the Lord in secret. He tells them in effect that a humble and quiet pattern of prayer, self-denial and reaching out to others is transforming and leads to a favorable outcome. What is our plan to turn ever closer to God in this Lenten season? Are we prepared to treat this season as a time to deepen our own relationship with the One who redeemed us? It has been a tradition at Divine Infant Jesus Parish to donate food, paper and cleaning products, and personal products to our St. Vincent de Paul society to distribute to members of our community in need. Below are specified items that may be donated during each week of Lent. These are merely suggestions and any food product, etc., is welcome at any time. Monetary donations are always appreciated as they are used to purchase gift cards and for emergencies. Our faith is reflected most strongly in our actions to help the most vulnerable, especially those who hunger. May God continue to bless your generous hearts.
