What if Jesus asked this question today? How would people respond? Some might focus on His role in history, saying, You are the founder of the Christian religion. Others might describe His work: You are a teacher, a healer, a spiritual guide. Perhaps there are some who would identify Him by His character, suggesting that He is a loving, generous, compassionate, and forgiving role model. But surely some would answer in the same spirit as Peter in today s reading. You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. This is a profound statement of faith. To call Jesus the Christ is to profess that He is the Messiah, the long awaited savior of God s people. To call Him the Son of God is to profess that He is not only a miracle working man. He is also divine. Among the disciples being questioned, Peter was the one who responded with this real insight into Jesus identity. Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, Jesus replied to Peter, but my heavenly Father. In other words, recognizing Jesus as our savior and our God isn t something we figure out on our own. It s a spiritual insight that comes through faith. Jesus did many amazing things while He walked the earth. He gave us a powerful example of love and forgiveness and He offered us teachings that help direct our lives. But we are called to see even more than these historical facts; as Christians we are called to recognize Him as the Christ. Through faith, we know who Jesus really is: our God and our Savior. Thus, we are called to give Him more than our respect and admiration as a remarkable man. We are called to give Him our full allegiance and to worship Him as the one true God. -3-

From the Pastor s Pen Taking the example from Pope Francis, I bow to you, the good parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua. I am happy and honored to become your pastor. A few weeks ago you said farewell to Fr. Lachlan Cameron. Last week, you experienced the sadness of saying farewell to Msgr. Dreasen, and the retirement of Judy Corbellini. Now this week you are welcoming me as your new pastor and Father Innocent as your new Associate Pastor, joining Father Vian, and Fr. Kline... and wondering what comes next. This is indeed a time of transition for all of us. This is not a comfortable time. The natural tendency is to try to overlook the impact and proceed as if nothing has changed. However, while we may have to change, we have the power to decide just how we want to change. We can decide what s good, what we want to keep in our parish life, and what we need to let go. We can evaluate what new things we want to try out and what is unique and different about us in our parish. To do this in an effective way, I ask you to nominate people from across the parish to serve on a Pastoral Transition Team. They should be people who are willing to attend the training workshop and the working meetings and meetings with parishioners that will follow. I would like to have the team formed over the summer. Once the team is formed, they will be trained in gathering information from the parish to create a vision for the future. This vision would then serve as an agenda for myself and the parish council and finance committee. The plan is for them to begin their info gathering in September, and report on their findings around November 1 st. Please write your nominations below and return them to me at the rectory or in the collection basket by July 15 th. Please just one set of nominations per person. However, you may copy it for others to use. Liturgy & Music Following Pentecost, the Church begins her slow descent from the great peaks of the Easter Season to the verdant pastures of Ordinary Time, the longest of the liturgical seasons. Like the lush June growth all around us, the green of the liturgical season points to the new life won for us by the Redemption of Jesus Christ, the new life of Charity. For Our Lord came to cast the fire of His love on the earth, and to that end, sent His Holy Spirit at Pentecost in the form of tongues of fire. Br. Fran Ordinary Time is the hour to go out to all the world and tell the good news. The feasts of June highlight this expansion of the Church. At least ten times, the Church vests in the red of the martyrs whose blood is the very seed of her growth. She also celebrates the feasts of the apostles Peter and Paul, and the birth of St. John the Baptist, proto-disciple and prophet. We too are called to be witnesses like the apostles and martyrs. May the Heart of Jesus inflame our hearts so that we may be worthy of our Baptismal call to holiness. The Adult Choir which sings at the 10:30am Sunday Mass will be singing through the summer months. We are looking for additional choir members, men and women, and college and high school students who have a love of music. If you are interested just come up to the choir gallery and sing along at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. That way you can see what we do and have a trial-run. ALL ARE WELCOME -7-

Judge Council Knights of Columbus will be hosting their annual blood drive on Wednesday, July 16 th at their council hall in Hewitt Square, East Northport. Our blood drive will run from 3:30pm 8:30pm. The Knights of Columbus will be taking appointments for their blood drive the weekend of July 5-6 after all Masses. To sign-up, fill out an appointment slip and leave it in the box as you leave church. You will receive a confirmation of your appointment in the mail. Each summer blood reserves drop to dangerously low levels. This year is no different. Perhaps you have seen the emergency appeals for blood on television or heard the announcement on the radio. Please consider bringing a family member or a friend with you to the blood drive. The Knights of Columbus thank everyone who has donated in the past, no matter where you donated.
