Lesson Text: John 21:1-14 Sunday, April 8, 2018 King James Version(KJV) I. THE DISCIPLES GATHER AFTER JESUS RESURRECTION (John 21:1-2) 1. After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. 2. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. II. THE DISCIPLES FISHING ON THE SEA (John 21:3-8) 3. Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. 4. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.

5. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. 6. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. 7. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. 8. And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. III. THE DISCIPLES MEET JESUS ON THE SHORE (John 21:9-14) 9. As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. 10. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. 11. Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.

12. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. 13. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. 14. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. New International Version (NIV) I. THE DISCIPLES GATHER AFTER JESUS RESURRECTION (John 21:1-2) 1. Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: 2. Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. II. THE DISCIPLES FISHING ON THE SEA (John 21:3-8) 3. I m going out to fish, Simon Peter told them, and they said, We ll go with you. So they went out and got into the

boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5. He called out to them, Friends, haven t you any fish? No, they answered. 6. He said, Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some. When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. 7. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord! As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, It is the Lord, he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. III. THE DISCIPLES MEET JESUS ON THE SHORE (John 21:9-14) 9. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. 10. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish you have just

caught. 11. So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12. Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. None of the disciples dared ask him, Who are you? They knew it was the Lord. 13. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. PRACTICAL POINTS FOR DISCUSSION: 1. Jesus is always with those who obey Him (John 21:1-3; Mark 16:7; Matthew 28:7). 2. We can rest assured that Jesus will do exactly what He says He will do (John 21:4; Mark 14:28). 3. Following Jesus instructions will always lead to success (John 21:5-6).

4. Those who love Jesus will recognize Him and share the good news with others (John 21:7). 5. By His power and provision, Jesus can turn nothing into something (John 21:8-9). 6. Jesus makes preparation and provision for His own (John 21:10-14). ***The Bible Expositor and Illuminator, Union Gospel Press***
