MARQUETTE ASSEMBLY #1197 September 2017 Faithful Friar: Father Daniel Schuster Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another's statement than to condemn it -St. Ignatius, Spiritual Exercises, #22 It is an honor to serve as the Vocation Director for the Green Bay Diocese and as your new Chaplain. Formed by this teaching from St. Ignatius, I want to acknowledge and thank all the Knights that I have met along the way first as a seminarian and then as a priest. You each have displayed such good intentions as you serve your parishes, the Church, and our country. Sometimes when we are out laboring in the world, at a meeting, a conference, or a social gathering someone may upset you. We do not always agree on everything! It could be something someone says or does, or even just the way they leave you feeling after a conversation. To build up the kingdom in this world, let us take the advice of St. Ignatius. To assume or provide for each person s good intention, even if it is not at all evident, is a fruitful spiritual practice that can lead to great holiness. This spiritual attitude yields understanding which is a gift of the Holy Spirit. The search for understanding can lead to peace. St. Ignatius even encourages us to have a good conversation with someone with the possibility of 1 P age
loving, fraternal correction. I suppose this reflection is somewhat self-motivated, but with good reason. As a priest, I would ask the People of God to give a favorable interpretation to the things that I do even when they seem perplexing. Right now in our country, there are a lot of passionate people who are displaying their varied values and beliefs. Some of those values and beliefs are objectively not grounded in truth, beauty and goodness. It may be helpful for each of us as Catholic Christian Knights to seek to see the good in each person, and to be more ready to understand what their true intentions might be. This practice of supplying the good intentions of others does not excuse evils such as racism, bigotry, or radical extremisms of various kinds. Evil is still evil. Nonetheless, we can seek and strive after peace by trying (even through painful prayer) to look for the good intentions in each person and by having a conversation when it is uncomfortable. Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do. Luke 23:34 As we support the value of patriotism as Knights, let us not become discouraged. If we assume the good intentions of others even if we end up being dead wrong we still grow in true holiness because we have made a willful attempt to take up the attitude of Jesus Christ. May you imitate Christ in his love! Pax et bonum, Rev. Daniel J. You may recall we were ice and snowed out this year. I was considering having an informal officer meeting to discuss programs, budgets and other charitable activities for the coming year. That would be in lieu of a social that month. My thinking was that we had enough Christmas, New Years and other holiday activities by the end of December. Let me know your thoughts on this matter. 4 P age
Faithful Navigator Bob Reich & Lady Jean Faithful Navigator Notes The Assembly lost an exceptional Sir Knight when SK Donald J. Ledvina passed away on August 3, 2017. We are grateful for his service to the community and the Knights of Columbus. He will be deeply missed. We must remember our challenge to increase our membership to replace these wonderful men that have gone on before us. As noted in our calendar of events, the next exemplification is coming up on October 28, 2017. Get your candidate forms and payment to the Faithful Navigator or the Faithful Comptroller as soon as possible. There will be much more said about this at the Business Meeting. As always, please let me know of any Sir Knight that is ill or in distress. My email address is bobreich64@gmail.com. I can always be reached at 920-469-0859 or leave a message at 920-265-5796. May God bless you and yours. Yours in Christ, SK Bob Reich, FN (920-469-0859 or cell 920-265-5796 or bobreich64@gmail.com) Faithful Comptroller Notes Last couple of months I wrote about how our assembly can continue to grow its membership. The only real source of new members that our assembly can draw from is the local council. That it is why it is imperative that our assembly members are visible to those prospect Sir Knights in our own councils. 5 P age
Religiously Devoted, Patriotically Proud For most men who follow Jesus, there comes a time when duty extends beyond our own lives, beyond how we lead our families, and into how we serve our fellow man. That's what the Knights of Columbus is all about. The Patriotic Degree allows K of C members to take this one step further. "Sir Knight" is more than a title it s an honor. Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801 1890) was a convert to Catholicism from the Church of England, and one of the great minds of the 19th century. As a Roman Catholic priest, he became one of the greatest Catholic apologists in the history of the Church. He was a prolific writer and persuasive preacher. Cardinal Newman was beatified by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on September 19, 2010 in Birmingham, England. To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often. Fear not that thy life shall come to an end, but rather fear that it shall never have a beginning. Nothing would be done at all if one waited until one could do it so well that no one could find fault with it Cardinal Newman Proudly Serving the Country Knights of the Patriotic Degree glorify God by serving our communities and nations as though Christ were the one being served. Unwavering Support of the Faith Knights of the Patriotic Degree hold unwaveringly to what is right and honorable, working to keep God in the civic arena, serving the life of the Church, and defending laws that recognize the sanctity of life and true religious liberty. Summer is just about over; what plans do you have to bring in a new member into the Order? MORE Knights bring MORE hands (& hearts), to raise MORE funds (& to evangelize), doing GOD's good works helping MORE people in need! From our Master: Be advised there is an error on the Exemplification Registration Form It has the Ladies Luncheon cost of $20.00 the cost of the Ladies Luncheon is $15.00 per person. The Banquet cost is $35.00 per person. That cost covers the beverages for the Social hour after the Mass. Again, I need to stress that the Banquet can only handle 200 people. Get your reservations in early as once 200 people are registered names will then be put on a backup list and will only get in if there are cancellations. Friday Night Eastern Wisconsin District Meeting We will be having an Eastern Wisconsin District Meeting at the Sacred Heart School of Theology. Information will be coming mid September. If you have any questions regarding the Exemplification, or meeting please contact me. I hope that you and your family enjoy the Fall.
