Monday Memo St. Ambrose Catholic School October 8, 2018
Principal s Corner: Wisdom The virtue that we are cultivating in first quarter is wisdom. We often associate wisdom with age, so it seems that it might be difficult to teach it to children. The virtue of wisdom however is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, so wisdom grows with grace and we should pray for wisdom. Wisdom as a virtue means seeing with God s eyes, listening with the God s ears, loving with God s heart, and speaking with God s words. At any age and in any situation in life, we can pray for God s wisdom to help us through. It is not our own wisdom we should rely upon, but wisdom that comes from God. Last Sunday s reading from the letter of James has this to say this about the qualities of wisdom: The wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconsistency or insincerity. James 3:17 We can use this reading to help our children better understand wisdom, and how to make wise choices. Are my actions pure? Does what I m doing create peace? Am I being gentle? Will good things (fruits) come from what I do? Are my motives sincere? As always, the best way to teach children is by our own example. We can use these same questions to look at our own actions and reactions.
Prayer for Wisdom: PRAYER FOR WISDOM HEAVENLY FATHER, YOU KNOW EVERY DECISION I NEED TO MAKE AND EVERY CHALLENGE I FACE. PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR THE TIMES I TRY TO FIGURE THIS LIFE OUT ON MY OWN. I NEED YOU. I NEED YOUR HOLY SPIRIT TO GIVE ME STRENGTH, WISDOM AND DIRECTION.
St. Ambrose Investing in the Future Auction As you know, the St. Ambrose Investing in the Future Auction is quickly approaching. This year s auction proceeds will be going to help St. Ambrose Forever continue to build the endowment fund for our school. So far, St. Ambrose Forever has donated over $10,000 in annual scholarships and needed materials to help keep our school the premiere education center that it is in South City. We are still in need of a few volunteers to help out the night of the auction and to assist in reaching out to potential donors to confirm if they intend to donate or not. They are in need of 2 more people for the night of the auction as well as 3 5 people to call potential donors. If you re able to help out, please use the link below to sign up and you will be contacted by a member of the board. Remember, every family is required to volunteer 10 hours each school year. The time helping out with the auction will count toward that requirement. www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b4bafab2ba4f49-stambrose Phil Nikolai, GBA
School Board News Last winter the School Board received a request to review the honor roll ceremony that was held after Mass. The Board looked into the request more deeply. There were three distinct areas that arose. First, The ceremony really does not fit with the St. Ambrose mission and philosophy of education. St. Ambrose has been committed to beingan inclusive school. Second, one of the goals of St. Ambrose is to provide a quality education. Awards ceremonies have been shown to reduce creativity and risk-taking which enhance learning in favor of easier point-gathering or work for a specific grade. Third, the faculty continually works to build community and strong relationships. The ceremony itself undermines students and teacher-student relationships by creating an environment that is not collaborative. Therefore, in order to tryto create an environment of trulylifelonglearners whoare willingto take risks rather than simply get enough points for a specific grade, the Board has elected that this year we will not do the ceremony. In order to recognize individual student achievement and hard work, honors will still be awarded. Students will be able to share their personal accomplishments with their families.
