From the Pastor Both the Advent and the Christmas seasons were shortened by a week this year, so our break from having scaffolding erected in the Basilica was not very long. This week additional scaffolding, albeit on a much smaller scale, was erected in front of the two side altars as well as in the choir loft. These two sites represent the next phase of the work that has to be done to the interior of the Basilica. And here s why the work has to be done. As the marble in the side altars above the statues of Saint Joseph and the Sacred Heart were being cleaned after the restoration of the ceiling of the nave, fractures in both the green and red marble were detected. These cracks were beginning to compromise the stability of the marble. In addition repairs that had been done previously in these areas were failing. Because of water infiltration behind the marble, rather severe efflorescence between the individual pieces of the marble had developed. This efflorescence was easily seen by the naked eye from the floor of the Basilica. Obviously the marble had to be removed so that the wall behind it as well as the system of copper pins holding the marble sections in place could be inspected. In fact as the marble sections were being removed, a few of them broke apart in the hands of the workmen. Therefore, the marble sections are not able to be reused, but must be replaced by new marble. The black and white border inlays in these sections, however, are salvageable. When the marble was completely removed, the brick wall behind the marble showed signs of previous water damage, but moisture tests done on the wall itself indicated that there was no recent water infiltration and that the wall was dry. That fact means that the work done on the exterior of the Basilica in that area was most probably successful in preventing further water damage. Therefore, Daprato Rigali Studios will be fabricating new marble sections, installing them and securing them with a finish date for the repair of the marble above the statues of Saint Joseph and the Sacred Heart in the side altars by Easter. Shortly we will begin to inspect the acoustical tiles in the ceilings of the transepts as well as the stone walls of the Basilica in the transept area. The stone there shows signs of previous water infiltration that is evident from the floor of the Basilica by the naked eye. Scissor lifts will be used to conduct the inspection and so some of the pews will have to be removed. We are hoping to complete this inspection during the week so that our Sunday liturgies will not be too severely disrupted. I ve asked our esteemed director of music to explain the phase of the restoration project that centers on the great organ, choir loft and balcony of the Basilica. Ken Sotak s description follows. God Bless you for your patience and understanding. Monsignor John Pollard 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

From the Music Director The work for stage three of the basilica ceiling restoration project began on January 2 nd. This part of the project is focused on the portion of the ceiling that sits above the choir loft. The construction portion of this stage is expected to be completed just before Holy Week. Like the work done through the nave and sanctuary, the current ceiling material above the choir loft will also be removed and replaced. To facilitate the work being done on the ceiling, which includes the installation and dismantling of scaffolding, removing the old panels and any associated debris and raising up and installing the new ceiling panels, the pipes of the basilica organ as well as parts of the console (this includes the keyboards and pedalboard) have been removed. This removal not only makes way for the work to be done on the ceiling, it prevents the possibility of accidental damage to the instrument during the construction process. Also, although the pipes of the organ were carefully covered during the first stage of construction from May through December, a considerable amount of dust and dirt still found its way into the pipes and organ mechanism over that period of time. As a result, the instrument, both the pipes and the internal winding mechanism are in need of a thorough cleaning, which will be done during the time the instrument is out of the basilica. Like downstairs in the basilica, scaffolding must be used for this stage of ceiling restoration. The scaffolding will be installed the last two weeks of January, so restoration work can begin immediately after. Unlike the first stage of construction, in which there was scaffolding throughout the body of the basilica, most of the scaffolding for this stage of construction will be confined to the choir loft balcony. However, a few support scaffolding posts will be placed at ground level in the basilica. This will require the area taken by the last three to four pews in the basilica to be roped off and remain off limits to parishioners while the scaffolding is in place. A project like this requires the balancing of a number of considerations. Here are a few you might find interesting: The ceiling above the choir loft is covered with 36 panels of material that will be removed. These 36 panels will be replaced with the same solid-surfaced material that was used for the ceiling in the nave of the basilica; There is a total of 3,219 pipes in the basilica organ of which approximately 2,889 have been removed to facilitate the work to be done to restore the ceiling; It took approximately 250 hours to remove the organ pipes and once the work on the ceiling is completed it will take another 300 hours to reinstall the pipes that were removed; 550 hours will be go into the process of cleaning the pipes; Once installed, the pipes will once again need to be balanced in the room. This process is called voicing, and it will require a good 4 weeks or 320 hours to complete; The total time spent on the organ alone, from beginning to end, will take approximately 2000 work hours to complete. As mentioned above, the majority of the organ has been removed from the basilica. It will be stored offsite at the Berghaus Organ Company s facility where the cleaning of the pipes will take place. We are in the last phase of this restoration project. The work so far has already taken a long time, and the full term of the ceiling restoration project will be almost a year. But given the results we ve seen to date I believe the wait will be worth it. It brings to mind the saying - Good things come to those who wait. I feel confident that you will agree. Parish News A Lenten Invitation Eucharistic Adoration Because of Christ s love for His Church, we have the true body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. To honor this miracle, Queen of All Saints will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Friday s in Lent. Every Friday in Lent 9:30am to 6pm Benedict Center Chapel The tradition of Eucharistic Adoration has dated back to the 4th Century where people prayed before the Eucharist exposed in the monstrance. St. John Paul II asks Catholics: Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in Adoration. This Lent, please consider spending a half-hour or hour with Jesus in the Eucharist, to pray to Him, to listen to Him, to rest in Him, and to keep Him company. We would like to have at least three adorers/volunteers present during Adoration. You can signup online at http://signup.com/go/mempijs. You will also have the opportunity to signup after the Masses the weekends of Feb 4th & 11th. Walk-ins, of course, are welcome! f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 14, 2018 Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, What are you looking for? - John 1:38 What are you looking for? Are you wasting your time looking for the material comforts of the world? Or, is your heart longing for something deeper that can only be found by spending time with God? Take time, each day, in silence and ask the Lord what it is that He wants you to do. Stewardship in the New Year We Christians are but God s stewards. Everything we have is on loan from the Lord, entrusted to us for a while to use in serving Him. Water The Source of Life (And the Enemy of Buildings) Our faith offers us many instances of water used as a symbol of life. Those who drink the water I will give them will never be thirsty again John 4:19 But when water gets where it s not supposed to be, it can be destructive. That is why we must take special measures to keep water out of our buildings, a particularly difficult task considering the design of our Basilica. The next time you are out in the parking lot, take a look above the west transept to see the work recently done to seal the flashing and keep water out and our walls dry. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica.
