Music of the Mass Ach Arme Welt - Brahms Die Deutsche Liturgie - Mendelssohn Christe du Lamme Gottes - Praetorius Psalm 100 - Schutz For further information about the music at today s mass, please take a copy of our music bulletin, High Notes, High Church, which can be found in the corridor and in St Cross Hall. Thou, poor vain world, deludest me, yes, that I grant thee verily, and can not still deny thee. Ah, thou false world, thou art not true, thy glories fade, I know and rue, with grief and sorrow try me. The honours, riches, thou hast brought, in death, in dire distress are naught; Thy treasure vain and falsely wraught. Lord, give me peace eternal. Music: Johannes Brahms (1883-1897) Words: Anon. Entrance Hymn - Sung by See Next Page THE ORDER OF MASS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit

1 A mighty Fortress is our God, A Bulwark never failing; Our Helper He amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, And, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide Our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth His Name, From age to age the same, And He must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us: The Prince of Darkness grim, We tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, For lo! his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him. 4 That word above all earthly powers, No thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours Through Him who with us sideth: Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also; The body they may kill: God s truth abideth still, His Kingdom is forever.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee. Kyrie Eleison - Sung by the Choir Κyrie Eleison Christe Eleison Kyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy Lord, have mercy Gloria in Excelsis - Sung by

Collect for the First Sunday after Trinity s

Collect for the Twenty Third Sunday After Trinity O God, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all godliness: Be ready, we beseech thee, to hear the devout prayers of thy Church; and grant that those things which we ask faithfully we may obtain effectually; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Old Testament Lesson There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; and shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: but with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. Isaiah 11 v. 1-10

Gradual Psalm Can. Full Can. Full WE have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us: what thou hast done in their time of_old: How thou hast driven out the heathen with thy hand, and planted our fathers in: how thou hast destroyed the nations, and made thy people to flou_rish. For they gat not the land in possession through their own sword: neither was it their own arm that helped them; But thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy counte_nance: because thou hadst a favour unto_them. Can. Thou art my King, O God : send help unto Jacob. Full Through thee will we overthrow our ene_mies : and in thy Name will we tread them under that rise up against_us. Can. For I will not trust in my bow : it is not my sword that shall help me; Full But it is thou that savest us from our enemies : and puttest them to confu-sion that hate us. Can. We make our boast of God all day long : and will praise thy Name for ever. Ps. 44 v. 1-9 New Testament Lesson Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose God is their

belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. Philippians 3 v. 17-end Gradual Liberasti nos, Domine, ex affligentibus nos: et eos qui nos oderunt confudisti. It is thou, O Lord, that savest us from our enemies and puttest them to confusion that hate us. Gospel Acclamation He maketh peace within thy borders: and filleth thee with the flour of wheat.

The Gospel The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew: Glory be to thee, O Lord. Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cæsar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Cæsar s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which are Cæsar s; and unto God the things that are God s. When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way. Matthew 22 v. 15-22 This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Sermon Moving Images The Chaplain Nicene Creed - Sung by

Intercessions The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. Confession The Celebrant invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Offertory Sentence - Sung by the Choir Out of the deep have I called unto thee O Lord : Lord hear my voice

Offertory Hymn - Sung by Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Hymnal 440 Prayer over the Gifts Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Father almighty: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. The Celebrant prays a Collect. reply: Amen The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. The Proper Preface follows, which leads into the Sanctus and Benedictus: Heilig, heilig, heilig, ist Gott, der Herr Zebaoth! e Lande sind seiner Ehre voll. Hosianna in der Höh! Gelobt sei, der da kommt im Namen des Herrn! Hosianna in der Höh! Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Sabaoth lands are full of thy Glory. Hosanna in the Highest Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the Highest. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer all sing: Amen.

The Lord s Prayer - Sung by As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say: Agnus Dei - Sung by the Choir Christe, du Lamm Gottes, Der du trägst die Sünd' der Welt, Erbarm dich unser! Christe, du Lamm Gottes, Der du trägst die Sünd' der Welt, Gib uns dein'n Frieden! Amen. O lamb of God, That takes away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. O lamb of God, That takes away the sins of the world. Grant us your peace. Amen. Music: Michael Praetorius (1571-1621)

Invitation to Communion Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him that taketh away the sins of the world: blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed. Communion Sentence - Sung by the Choir Amen dico vobis, quidquid orantes petitis credite quia accipietis et fiet vobis. Verily I say unto you, what things soever ye desire when ye pray: believe that ye receive them and it shall be done unto you. Distribution of Communion Please come forward to kneel or stand if you are unable. The Church of England welcomes communicant members of all Churches who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to receive Holy Communion in faith, hope and charity. If you would like to receive a blessing, please fold your arms when approached or carry your order of service with you. If you would like to make enquiries about baptism or confirmation, or preparation to receive communion, please contact one of the clergy. During the Distribution of Communion, the Choir sing a motet: Jauchzet dem Herrn alle Welt. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. Music: Henrich Schütz (1585-1672) Words: Psalm 100

Communion Hymn Deck thyself, my soul, with gladness Hymnal 280 The Celebrant prays the Post-Communion Prayer, to which all reply: Amen Almighty God, we thank thee for feeding us with the body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer thee our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of thy Spirit to live and work to thy praise and glory. Amen. Blessing and Dismissal The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, establish, strengthen and settle you in the faith; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ: Thanks be to God. Recessional Hymn Now thank we all our God Hymnal 413

The Angelus The Angel of the Lord brought glad tidings to Mary: And she concieved by the Holy Ghost. Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee: Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary And the word was made flesh: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Music: attrib. Philip Ursell (sometime Principal of the House) The Priest then recites a Collect to which all respond: Amen. Organ Voluntary Please leave quietly or remain seated for the Organ Voluntary Everyone is invited to join us for drinks in the Ursell Room following the mass.

NOTICES Next week is a special week at Pusey House -- the celebration of Saints and Souls on Tuesday and Wednesday marks in two distinct ways (see below) the culmination of the daily and weekly round of commemorations and celebrations of the Christian year. The great Elizabethan divine Richard Hooker spoke about how certain days become "clothed with the robes of holiness", to serve as windows by which eternity breaks into time, and hidden realities become sensible for us. On Tuesday (again, more info below), there will be a congregational meal after the celebrations of Saints, the great cloud of witnesses who worship with us, pray for us, and serve as examples in different ways, each showing some particular aspect of the fullness of life which we celebrate. We hope that you will be able to join us for some part of these celebrations and commemorations. Pusey House is grateful for the use of the chamber organ (built by William Church in 1980), on loan this term from the Faculty of Music. We would like to offer a special thanks to Professor Michael Burden, Chair of Faculty, Dr Owen Rees, and the Provost and Fellows of Queen s College Daily Offices begin with Matins at 7.40am with mass celebrated at 8.00am, followed by a light breakfast. A ten minute pause for prayer and reflections takes place in the chapel at noon during the week. Evensong is sung at 5.30pm, Monday to Friday (with Benediction on Friday). are warmly invited to worship with us. Ritualed Knowing: our Michaelmas discussion group will this term be considering the idea of liturgy as the consummation of philosophy, and what it might mean for our study or our prayer that all our knowing is ultimately something we do with our bodies. are most welcome continuing this Monday (Weeks 3-8) at 6pm-7pm in the Hood Room. Bring your thinking caps. We ll provide the coffee. Common Good: Developing a Lifestyle of Compassion on Thursday of 7th week, 24th November, we will be holding the second of our evenings of food, discussion, and silent prayer for all who are involved, or would like to be involved, in our community-service initiative, please join us from 6-7.30 pm in the Hood Room.

Compline by Candlelight: Compline is a quiet reflective service for the ending of the day. Do join us at 9:30pm on Tuesday. Recollection Lectures: The second of this term s Recollection lectures will take place on Wednesday of 6th, 16 November. Professor Carol Harrison, Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity, Christ Church, will give a talk titled Doxology and Knowledge of the Heart in Augustine s De Doctrina Christiana Book 1 Please note the new times of the Recollection Lectures: Tea and coffee at 3.30pm, with the lecture beginning at 4.00pm Saints Day is being celebrated with a High Mass at 6.30pm on Tuesday, 1 November. The preacher will be the Rev d Will Donaldson, Chaplain of St Edmund Hall, Director of Pastoral Care at St Aldates Church, and Area Dean of Oxford. On all Saints Day we recollect the lives and witness of all the saints throughout the ages, from the early Apostles and Martyrs to the present age. These are the great cloud of witnesses who worship with us, who assist us by their prayers, and who serve as models, examples, and encouragements in our own pilgrimage. Souls Day is being celebrated with a Requiem Mass at 6.30pm the following day, Wednesday, 2 November. The preacher will be The Rev d James Wilkinson, Vicar of South Hinksey (St Laurence s) with New Hinksey (St John s), Oxford. At the candlelit service for Souls we pray especially for and with the faithful departed in Christ, "those whom we love but see no longer." The rituals of Souls are more sombre than the celebrations of Saints, as we long and wait expectantly for the Risen and Ascended Lord to bring to perfection the work he has begun in them and in us. We also pray for the Founders, Benefactors and Friends of Pusey House. If you would like to have us remember and pray for a friend, loved one, or family member on Souls Day please send their names to the Pusey office (pusey.office@stx.ox.ac.uk) by Tuesday evening of next week, 1 November (or earlier, if possible). Alternatively, you may want to write their names on the list in the chapel corridor.
