First Reading: Acts 2:14a, 36-41 With great authority, Peter proclaims to the people that the Christ who was crucified is indeed the Messiah. Urging them to reform and be baptized in the name of Christ, three thousand responded to his words and were baptized. Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:20b-25 This is a strong exhortation from Peter to the people to endure suffering for Christ as he did for them. Healed by his wounds, they have returned to the shepherd. Gospel: John 10:1-10 MAY 7, 2017: FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Christ uses the beautiful image of the shepherd to describe his care for his sheep. He also says he is the sheepgate and promises that Whoever enters through me will be safe. I am The Good Shepherd, the good shepherd givith his life for the sheep John 10:11 A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Fourth Sunday of Easter May 7, 2017 Beloved: If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps. When he was insulted, he returned no insult, when he suffered he did not threaten, instead he handed himself over to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that free from sin, we might live for righteousness Risen Lord, to unite themselves to Jesus and His cross. We move a few weeks from Easter and can forget that the cross of Christ is the measure of the world. How do I react to adversity? Revenge, road rage, doing unto others before they do unto me it is easy to avoid the admonition of Peter. To be sure I m on the right path I look to the virtues found in the beatitudes - meekness, humility, desire for holiness, dependence upon God, and yes even the suffering I endure. Together with the virtues which Paul offered the Galatians, I become fully equipped to move forward.

Please return the offering envelope in the collection baskets or to the rectory. Our Parish Name Cardinal Dolan has not accepted the three names for our parish that we submitted to him. The reason it took so long was that he wanted to have all the submitted requests before making any decisions. There are a number of parishes with the same names as the ones we submitted. The cardinal suggested the following three names: Pope John XXIII Pope John Paul II St. Mathew Our Lady of Perpetual Help We will have a vote on these three names soon. Summer Mass Schedule Once Religious Education ends there is a significant drop in Mass attendance. It is presumed that families begin to go away on weekends. Once school is out for the summer, there is an even greater drop in attendance. This summer, we will have a schedule change to adapt to the drop in attendance. At St. Mathews Church, from June 11 th to September 3 rd, the 8:00am & 9:00am Masses, will be combined into an 8:30am Mass. There will be plenty of reminders before it happens. Dear Parishioners of St. Matthew & OLPH Parish: Since March of this year, your pastor, Fr. Robert Henry and some parishioners have created a Prison Ministry, partnering with my ministry here at the Westchester County Department of Correction in Valhalla, N.Y. The desire to help those in the County Jail while incarcerated and later upon their release, has inspired some of your parishioners to help with donations of various needs. This has helped some inmates and their families who are struggling on so many levels. The members of your parish who have responded to this ministry (and hopefully the Lord will call more) is how your Pastor and some parishioners are present to the imprisoned Christ. All of you are part of this ministry just by praying for those incarcerated. This is a beautiful way of helping and a beautiful way that salvation becomes a tangible Gift to you and to others! This ministry is still growing and if anyone else feels called to be part of this, please contact Fr. Henry. May Our Risen Lord bless all of you in the parish of St. Matthew for all the good you do for others. Sincerely your brother in Risen One, Fr. Paul Tolve - Director of Pastoral Services Westchester County Department of Correction Valhalla, New York
