Second Sunday of Lent March 12, 2017 Christ Jesus... destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 2 Timothy 1:10b LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE During the season of Lent, the Church urges the faithful to reflect a spirit of penance in their daily lives through performing acts of faith and abstinence. FASTING requires a Catholic from the 18th birthday to the 59th birthday to reduce the amount of food eaten from normal. The Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence. ABSTINENCE requires a Catholic 14 years or older to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus This should be observed throughout the year but always during Lent. ASH WEDNESDAY & GOOD FRIDAY are days of Fast and Abstinence. FRIDAYS during Lent are days of Abstinence. This year, the Solemnity of Saint Patrick, our patron, falls on a Friday, and I have decided to dispense our people from abstaining from meat. ~Fraternally in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be held on Friday evenings during Lent at 7:30pm from March 3rd-April 7th. You are invited to make this a part of your Lenten journey. Join us for soup and salad in the social hall at 6:30pm. Please sign up to bring soup, salad or bread. Sign up sheets are in church/chapel lobby. PARTNERS-IN-PRAYER - during Lent we ask parishioners to take a picture of a 2nd grader or a 9th grader and pray for them as they prepare for 1st Communion or Confirmation. Pictures will be on the bulletin board in church/ chapel lobby so keep a lookout! Catholic Relief Services RICE BOWL LENTEN PROJECT Elementary and Jr./Sr. High Education Families are putting something aside they enjoy to give back to the poor through 40 days of prayer fasting and almsgiving. Examples: giving up a candy bar, video game, toy, etc. and place the money they would have spent on this item in their rice bowl. Children will receive a rice bowl and calendar for daily reflections guiding them through the Lenten Journey. Also, we would like to extend this Lenten project to our Church Community. There is a collection box in the church lobby. You re all invited to join the Confirmation candidates for these events: 1ST SCRUTINY THEME WATER, is on Sunday, March 19th at St. Augustine s Chapel at 9:30am. 2ND SCRUTINY, THEME LIGHT, is on Saturday, March 25th at St. John s Church at 5pm. 3RD SCRUTINY, THEME LIFE/ RESURRECTION is on Sunday, April 2nd at St. John s Church at 11am.

CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES celebrated the Rite of Election on March 5th signing the official Church Book, making a commitment to continue with their preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Rite of Election banner and book are in the lobby! Your prayers a n d s u p p o r t a r e n e e d e d. Congratulations to our Confirmation Candidates!! LOVE FOR OSCAR AND OWEN FUNDRAISER St. John s Church will be holding a community fundraiser on Sunday, March 26th from 9am to 12:30pm in the parish hall, to support the Love for Oscar and Owen Fire Fund to benefit two local boys, Oscar (12) and Owen (7) who lost everything on July 26, 2016 due to a tragic house fire. Your love and support is truly appreciated come have some yummy pancakes and help thy neighbor. THE JOURNEY OF TRANSFIGURATION We used to be such good friends. How is it that you ve moved so far away? one man asked another. Perhaps, the other replied, you have moved away. By standing still. This exchange very well could have happened between Peter and Jesus, had Peter been allowed to erect tents to stay on the mount of the Transfiguration. He nearly succumbed to the temptation to stay in a place of wonder and light. But Jesus knew the hard truth: we are on a continual journey when we are walking the paths of God s will. It is not good for us to stay in one place on our faith journey. Equally unhealthy is staying put in times of joy and wonder to avoid life s difficulties, or to wallow in our trials and temptations and fail to be companions for our sisters and brothers who are also suffering or celebrating! The pilgrim Church is required to do one thing on its Lenten journey: to walk continually with Christ as his Body born of water and the Spirit, seeking God s will, helping the reign of God to be known on earth, being led to the end of our journey, transfigured for all time into the company of heaven. ~Father George BEYOND ST.
