May 28, 2017 The Seventh Sunday of Easter Divine Service Setting 1 (LSB pg 151) 8:00 a.m. AS WE GATHER Where is eternal life? Eternal life is wherever Jesus is. That includes everywhere Jesus has been in His life on this earth serving, healing, teaching, living, dying, rising, and ascending. It includes everywhere Jesus will be living and reigning at the Father s right hand in His everlasting kingdom in the new creation. Eternal life is also everywhere Jesus is now coming among His people through His Word written, spoken, and proclaimed, and His Sacraments in water, bread, and wine. Finally, eternal life is wherever Jesus is with you in your thoughts, words, and acts of kindness in daily love and service to your neighbor. Sit FIRST READING: Acts 1:12-26 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus-- he was one of our number and shared in this ministry." (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) "For," said Peter, "it is written in the book of Psalms, " 'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, " 'May another take his place of leadership.' Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection." So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these 5

two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs." Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. SECOND READING: 1 Peter 4:12-19, 5:6-11 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?" So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand ALLELUIA VERSE 6

HOLY GOSPEL: John 17:1-11 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the seventeenth chapter. After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. "I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we are one. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. APOSTLE S CREED C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen 7

Sharing the Caring Christ with All People John 17:1-11: On this last Sunday of the Easter Season, we hear Jesus praying His High Priestly Prayer, and He s praying for you; He s praying for your church family. He wants you to be people of His Word and Name unified as one Body with Him as the Head. His Body should function as ONE with Him as the Head and every member of the Body having a unique but unified function together as one for the purpose of His Kingdom. Read John 17 once again today at home, and then pray for His will to be first done in your individual life and collectively as a unified church family. Pray that your life would be an answer to Jesus prayer that His will may be done to carry out His purpose in the world that needs the Good News of salvation. Today s Radio Broadcast is sponsored by the members of Trinity. We thank them for sponsoring this broadcast. We have sponsorship openings in July and August. If you would like to sponsor a broadcast please complete a form and turn it in. Forms are available in the church office.
