First Look TM Curriculum for Preschoolers - Rooms E, F (4 s & 5 s) January 22, 2017 Basic Truth: Jesus wants to be my friend forever. Key Question: Who is there when you need Him? Bottom Line: Jesus is there when I need Him. Memory Verse: You are everything I need. Psalm 119:57, NIrV Bible Story Focus: I can ask Jesus for help. The Lepers Luke 17:11-19 Make It Fun (Introductory Activities, 10 minutes) Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as your children arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door. 1. Come Back Come Back is an activity that helps the children visualize a key concept in today s Bible story. What You Need: Medium-sized ball and a wall Before the Activity: We are going to roll the ball against the wall. What do you think it will do when it hits the wall? (Pause.) Yes! It will come back! During the Activity: When the ball comes back, catch it, and give it to the next person in line so they can have a turn. Are you ready? (Pause.) Here we go! After the Activity: Great job catching the ball when it came back! In our Bible story today, we are going to hear about some people who came back too! I cannot wait to find out where they went! Are you ready to hear a TRUE story from the Bible? 1

2. Count the Boo-Boos Count the Boo-Boos is an activity that uses counting skills to introduce today s Bible story. What You Need: Count My Boo-Boos Activity Page, white cardstock, and red pompoms During the Activity: Take a look at the men on your page. It looks like they have some boo-boos. Let s count their boo-boos together. (Point to each man and count together.) Now let s place some red pom-poms to show their boo-boos and count them again. After the Activity: Great job counting the boo-boos! In our Bible story today, we ll hear about some men who had some really painful boo-boos. But I think there is someone who can help them! You ll find out soon! 3. Morning and Night Morning and Night is an activity that opens up conversation between the leader and the children about the monthly theme. What You Need: Morning and Night Activity Page, white paper,, large piece of butcher paper, scissors, and a black marker BINS: Draw a line down the middle of the butcher paper, dividing it into two equal parts. Tape the picture of the sun on the top of one side of the butcher paper and the picture of the moon and stars on the top of the other side. Before the Activity: Hang the butcher paper vertically on the whiteboard. We are talking about TIME this month! I love that Jesus is there when I need Him ALL THE TIME! During the Activity: I have a chart here that has a picture of daytime (point to sun) and a picture of nighttime (point to picture of moon and stars). Let s talk about daytime first. Can you tell me some of the things that you do during the day? (Write answers.) Great answers! Can you tell me some things that you do at nighttime? (Write answers.) That is right! We do different things at different times of the day. (Review answers.) 2

After the Activity: No matter what time it is, Jesus is always there when we need Him all the time! Today in our Bible story, there are people who REALLY need Jesus help. Let s get ready to find out how Jesus helped them! Large Group (9:15 9:35/ 11:00 11:20) - Bring children to room H for singing, offering and story. Remember that you are responsible for crowd control, so seat your children strategically! Make It Stick (Application Activities, 35 minutes) These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today s Bible story and Bottom Line. 1. Bandage Verse Bandage Verse is an activity that gives the children a visual reminder of the Bible story as they repeat today s memory verse. What You Need: Red dot stickers (1 per child), BAND-AIDs (1 per child) During the Activity: Our memory verse this month is Psalm 119:57 and it says: You are everything I need. We ve talked about what a need is. A need is something that s necessary to live, like water. In our Bible story today, what did the men with boo-boos need? (Pause.) Yes, they needed someone to help make them better. And Jesus did make them better! I have some red dots for you. These will be your boo-boos. When you say the verse, I ll give you a BAND-AID to cover up your boo-boo. Let s say our verse together again. You are everything I need, Psalm 119.57. After the Activity: Great job, everyone! Jesus helped the men in our Bible story today. He gave them exactly what they needed by healing their boo-boos. And Jesus will always help us and give us what we need too. He is always there when I need Him. Who is there when you need Him? [Bottom Line] Jesus is there when I need Him. 2. Boo-Boos Boo-Boos is an activity that allows the children to re-enact today s Bible story while it is being retold to them. What You Need: red dot stickers 3

Before the Activity: The men in our story today were very sick! They had sores on their bodies just like this (put a red dot on your arm). Can you help me put more dots on my arms, so I can tell you the story? (Pause.) During the Activity: Thank you for your help. Now you can sit down. Our story today was about many men who had a problem. They were sick! They had sores on their bodies and they had to leave their homes and families so no one else would get sick. Poor men! They needed help. Do you remember who helped them? (Pause.) You got it! Jesus helped them! (Begin taking off the stickers.) Jesus healed the men and they got to go back to their families! (Finish removing stickers.) After the Activity: Jesus helped the men when they needed Him by healing them. We need to remember that He will help us too! Tell me: Who is there when you need Him? [Bottom Line] Jesus is there when I need Him! 3. What s Your Favorite? What s Your Favorite? is an activity that uses questions and answers to review today s Bottom Line. What You Need: A 3-foot piece of butcher paper, a marker BINS: Write the following questions on the butcher paper. Make sure to leave enough space below each question for the children s answers. What is your favorite color? What is your favorite food? What is your favorite toy? Who is in your family? Who in your family helps you? Who is there when you need Him? During the Activity: Ask the children the questions on the butcher paper and record their answers below each question. As you lead the children through the questions, the goal is to get to the last one, so you can talk about this month s Bottom Line. Make sure every child has a chance to answer. 4

During the Activity: Use magnets to hang the butcher paper on the white board: Look at my paper. Do you see these words? (Point.) They are questions that I want to ask you! I ll read the question out loud and then I ll call on you to answer. Are you ready? After the Activity: This was fun! I learned some new things about each of you from the questions we asked today. But the most important question is the one at the bottom. It s the question we ve been asking all month long. Who is there when you need Him? That s right. You can always count on Jesus to be there for you all the time! [Bottom Line] Jesus is there when I need Him. 4. Craft Stick Man Craft Stick Man is an activity that uses creativity and fine motor skills to review today s Bible story. What You Need: Jumbo craft sticks, red dot stickers, BAND-AIDs, Lepers Story Label During the Activity: In our Bible story today, we learned about some men who were very sick. They had a lot of boo-boos. Let s put these red dots on one side of our craft sticks to show the boo-boos. (Pause and help children that need assistance.) Great job! Who helped the sick men in our story today? (Pause.) Yes! Jesus helped them. Let s turn our craft sticks over and place the BAND-AID on one end and the label on the other end. (Demonstrate.) After the Activity: Your craft stick men look awesome! Great job, everyone! You can take these home and tell your mom or dad or grandma or brother or sister about what we learned today. Jesus was there to help the men who had boo-boos. And Jesus is there when we need Him too! Who is there when you need Him? [Bottom Line] Jesus is there when I need Him. 5

Make It Real (Small Groups, 5 minutes) Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests. Small Group Time What You Need: Paperclip Memory Verse Card (from the Week One Activity Pages on the Website) in your Bible at Psalm 119:57. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen for each small group. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): In today s story, we learned that we can ask Jesus for help. Remember the men with all the boo-boos in our story? No one else wanted to help them. The people thought their boo-boos were yucky and they were scared to get close to them. But guess who wanted to help them. (Pause.) That s right! Jesus! Jesus wanted the men to ask Him for help. And Jesus wants you to ask Him for help too! Jesus is there when we need Him and there s no problem too big or too little for Him. Who is there when you need Him? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] Jesus is there when I need Him! SGL: Which is so great, because the Bible verse we re learning this month says Jesus is everything we need. (Open Bible to memory verse card, and read the verse from the Bible.) You are everything I need, Psalm 119:57. (Lay Bible down.) Stand up and let s say that together with the motions. Here we go! CHILDREN and SGL: You are (point up) everything (hands out to sides) I need (point thumbs to chest), Psalm 119:57. (Open your hands like a book.) (Repeat the verse with the motions several times together.) SGL: You sound awesome! I am so proud of you! Now let s sit down and write in our prayer journal. Today we re going to ask Jesus to help us with something. It can be anything! Jesus wants everyone to ask Him for help with anything, anytime they need it. 6

So when I say your name, I want you to tell me one thing you want to ask Jesus to help you with and I ll write it beside your name. We can use the list when we pray. (Open prayer journal and hold your fun pen. Write each child s name and what they say beside their name. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters. ** Be prepared to follow up if a child shares a need for help that requires talking with a church director, pastor or parent.) This list is a very special list. I hope you always ask Jesus for help when you need it. Would anyone like to pray before I pray? (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) Now I will pray. Prayer SGL: Dear God, thank You for giving us Jesus to help us. Thank You that Jesus wants us to ask Him for help no matter who we are or what we need. Nothing is too big or too little for Jesus! My friends and I made a list of things we want to ask Jesus to help us with. Please help [child s name] with (read what that child listed). (Repeat for each child in your group). And thank You again for giving us Jesus and that He is always there when we need Him. We love You, God. In Jesus name, amen. 7
