Ohio, F R I D A Y, N O V E M B E R 22, 1940 APPRECIATION The Community Church in Stow f o r t h e past ten years has labored under the burden of debt, debt caused by the depression t h a t swept a w a y values and holdings of our people, thus making it impossible for t h e m to square with t h e bank. A settlement, in full, was finally agreed upon whereby the church must pay in two installments. The first installment was much larger than t h e second. Nov. 10th was the time to meet t h e obligation. So t h e good people, together with their friends, did nobly, they had a mind to work, they came across, they m e t a n d overpaid their quota. T h e second pull will not be easy, though much lighter t h a n t h e first. F o u r m o n t h s a r e alloted f o r t h e final payment, this will be m e t bravely a n d paid as p e r agreement. Yes, the mortgage will be burned within four months, t h e long, steep hill of debt will have been climbed a n d on the table-land thus gained we can see afar. W h a t a relief, w h a t a joy. Many incidents of profound devotion were in evidence Sunday, t h e 10th of Nov. Money came in f r o m friends and m e m b e r s who a r e not abundantly blessed in this world's goods. One m a n gave ten dollars, expressing a desire to give one hundred dollars. Bereavement has crushed t h a t home a n d financial reverses have added to its burden. Another m a n contributed two dollars, t h a t scraped f r o m the N o. 47 scanty sum of old age pension. Another handed in an envelope insisting t h a t no n a m e w a s necessary, enclosed was fifteen dollars. Another m a n living in Akron who h a s not a t t e n d e d t h e church f o r m a n y y e a r s suggested if I could collect a bill t h e s u m could be paid on t h e church debt. W h e n t h e circumstance was explained the bill w a s promptly paid a n d duly applied. T h e Men's Class, a n d w h a t a fine group of men it is, one Sunday quietly agreed a n d pledged to pay systematically approximately two h u n d r e d f i f t y dollars in a year. T h e Ladies' Class, this class might appropriately be named t h e honey bees of Stow, p u t a sack, containing one hundred two dollars a n d some cents on t h e plate Sunday morning. Another m a n handed m e five dollars as he came in the door. This good man, not a member, has reached t h e mile-stone of t h r e e score and ten years, h e has no income, his working days a r e few, he said, with a smile, t h a t he was happy to do it. The choir, this fine class of Stow's youth, a r e busy assembling a n d selling p a p e r f o r this fund, unusual devotion indeed f o r the singers to exercise themselves in this way. Space forbids the mention of m a n y other incidents of r e m a r k able consecration. I write this article f r o m an overflowing h e a r t of appreciation. I t h a n k God a n d t a k e courage. Our lesson today is the well known Parable of the Sower. Parables are earthly stories with a heavenly meaning and were often used by Jesus in his teaching. Parables should be a blessing to the hearer, but if they are not applied and used they may in time become a source of sorrow. "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God". Even the words of man have a germ in them which is able to take root in the minds of those who hear them, so it is not strange that God's words should be likened to seeds since they not only can take root but completely transform a whole character. The seed that fell by the wayside represents "they that have heard" the word of God, but before they really believe with their hearts the devil comes along with his nefarious work and convinces them that no up-to-date man would worry about sin or fear the wrath of God or believe a lot of superstitious talk of saving power. The devil has many such birds to snatch up the seeds that fall by the wayside. The seed that fell on the rock represents the man who comes to church gladly for a while, but at the first little difficulty because he disagrees with the pastor's thought, or takes offense at something done by a member, or objects to appeals for money his roots shrivel up and he stays home from church. We have earned the commendations that have come to us. In every way, at all times, we are faithful to our trust and we are studiously capable. The McGowan Funeral Home

This man keeps up his Christian name and is probably an influential man in the church, but he has allowed worry, or money, or business, or clubs, or possessions, or recreation to fill his whole time to the exclusion of the word of God. The seed that fell in the good ground represents those of an "honest and good heart" who hear the word and then proceed to incorporate it into their lives. For all the knowledge one can ever accumulate on the surface will never profit him as much as one little truth planted in the heart and cultivated until it bears fruit in the motives and principals of life. Phillips of 121 Sackett avenue passed away last Friday evening. She is the mother of Lawrence in Brazil, South America; Don of Munroe Falls; Wilmer of Cuyahoga Falls and Mrs. T. H. Sauter of Cuyahoga Falls; also nine grandchildren and one brother Edward Fulmer of Berea, Ohio, survive. Funeral services were held last Monday at

STOW MERCHANTS MEET Monday evening of this week thirty-six Stow merchants gathered at Community church to further perfect their organization. Officially they are now known as the Stow Merchants Association. A constitution and by-laws'will be drawn up by a committee consisting of Robert Imhoff, chairman, Oakley Spaght and Chester Holt. Their next meeting will be held the second Wednesday in December (the 11th).
