Dr. Esther Juhasz Course/Module description: In the first semester the course will introduce qualitative methodologies and field work in the study folklore. We will emphasize the connection between principal analytical theoretical approaches, research questions, fieldwork; the dialogic relationship between the researcher and the studied field, and the process of analysis and interpretation of folk expressions. The students will practice fieldwork methods: ethnographic interviews and participant observation for the study of textual and ritual folk expressions. The second semester will focus on theoretical and methodological aspects of the study of material culture. We will introduce documentation methods of material artifacts as well as interpretative analytical theories of the study of material culture. Course/Module aims: To study and practice field research methods in folklore Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: A successful completion of the course will enable the students to perform field work interviewsand analyze them according to the theoretical approaches to the study of folklore. They will acquire tools to document artifacts in their wide cultural contexts, and will be able to examine and analyze a corpus of material expressions of folk culture.
