ב ה JEWISH PHOTO ART CALENDAR 5775 2014-15 SHEMITAH YEAR

The Month of Elul Elul is an appropriate time to reflect on our actions and attitudes of the previous year, and resolve to correct our shortcomings. During Elul it is the Chabad custom to blow the Shofar after prayers to awaken our souls. Elul 26 First day, this year, for saying Selichot ( prayers for forgiveness ). The Selichot are said before dawn or early in the morning. Tishrei 1-2 Rosh Hashanah Rosh Hashanah literally means, Head of the Year. Imagine the year as a body and Rosh Hashanah as its brain, containing all the switches for every day of the year. That s also why it is the Day of Judgment: Every moment of these 48 hours, our words and actions adjust the program for another day of the year. Over the period of ten days until Yom Kippur, the code can still be revised by revising our own hearts and lives. It is customary on Rosh Hashanah to eat foods symbolizing sweetness, blessings and abundance. We hear the sounding of the Shofar on both days of Rosh Hashanah, Sept. 25 and 26 during the daytime. On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, we visit a body of water or pond containing live fish and recite the Tashlich prayers. Tishrei 4 Fast of GEDALIAH This fast day commemorates the tragic assassination of Gedaliah, a great Jewish leader during the Babylonian exile. Exiled to a distant land, speaking a foreign language, wearing strange clothes and doing unfamiliar business, at the end of the year we may feel estranged from our Father in Heaven. The shofar is the simple, earnest cry of the Jewish people, entreating our Father to allow us into the inner chambers of the palace. The cry pierces the heavens, the door opens wide and we are warmly welcomed inside for a new beginning. Photo by Michael Bukhman 2014 Outreach Publishing Corp., Brooklyn NY www.outreach770.com

Tishrei 10 Yom Kippur Yom Kippur ( Day of Atonement ) is the holiest day in the Jewish Year. It us so holy that the soul is at one with G-d. When the soul is at one, all is forgiven. There s a catch: Nothing must interfere with that oneness. That s why, from Friday evening, Oct. 3rd, until Saturday night, Oct. 4, in addition to the prohibition of work just like Shabbat there are five other off-limits activities: Eating and drinking, anointing with perfumes or lotions, marital relations, washing (for pleasure) and wearing leather shoes. Tishrei 15-21 Sukkot The Sukkah, a temporary hut with a roof of leaves, branches or sticks, reminding us of G-d s Clouds of Glory which sheltered the Jewish People during their 40 years in the Sinai Desert. Sukkot is a joyous holiday. For seven days, we are once again the original People of Moses wandering in the wilderness, surrounded by the Clouds of Glory. Only now those clouds are the greenery of a festive hut called a Sukkah. All meals are eaten in the Sukkah, barring inclement weather. Tishrei 21 Hoshana Rabbah On Hoshana Rabbah, a verdict is issued above: How much rain will descend this year and where. As Earth s lawyers, we follow ancient customs to influence this decree. All the preceding night, we recite the Book of Deuteronomy and the Book of Psalms. In the morning, we circle the Torah-reading platform of the synagogue seven times, lulav and etrog in hand, while reciting the Hoshanot. Then, in an ancient rite of profound mystical significance, we beat five willow branches on the floor. Tishrei 22-23 Simchat Torah The joy of Sukkot expands for seven days and then bursts into Shemini Atzeret a day containing all the joy of the coming year. The second evening of Shemini Atzeret, we celebrate Simchat Torah: All the Scrolls of the Torah are carried from their ark around the bimah seven times, with dance and song. In some communities, this is done on the first night, as well. On the morning of the second day, every man and boy is called to the Torah, as we complete the yearly cycle of Torah reading, and begin immediately anew. Photo by Meir Pliskin

The Shemitah Year This year is known as a Shemitah Year, literally: to release. Shemitah is a biblical commandment given to the Jews before they entered the Land of Israel. As soon as the Jews settled in the Land of Israel, they began to count and observe seven-year cycles. Every cycle would culminate in a Sabbatical year, known as Shemitah. Giving the Land A Rest For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather in its produce, but in the seventh year, the land shall have a complete rest, a Sabbath to the Lord; you shall not sow your field, you shall not prune your vineyard, nor shall you reap the after growth of your harvest.. - Leviticus 25:3-6. During the Shemitah year, the residents of the Land of Israel must completely desist from cultivating their fields. They also relinquish personal ownership of their fields; whatever produce grows on its own is considered communal property, free for anyone to take. Faith in the AlMighty In the ancient Israeli agrarian-based culture, the Shemitah year proved to be a difficult challenge for the people s collective trust in the Creator, the One who bequeathed them the Land of Milk and Honey. And if you should say: What will we eat in the seventh year? We will not sow, and we will not gather in our produce! -- Leviticus 25:20 Yet, those who put their trust in G d are richly rewarded: I, [G d,] will command My blessing for you in the sixth year, and it will yield produce for three years. And you will sow in the eighth year, while still eating from the old crops. Until the ninth year, until the arrival of its crop, you will eat the old crop! -- Leviticus 25:21-22 As well as giving the people an opportunity to put their faith in G-d and see it fulfilled, the yearlong break from working the land also allowed them to collectively take a breather and focus on higher, more spiritual pursuits such as prayer, the learning of Torah, and acts of goodness and kindness. Kislev 19 Rabbi Dov-Ber, the Maggid of Mezeritch, passed away. He was the successor of the Baal Shem Tov. Release from Czarist imprisonment in Petersburg, in 1798, of his youngest disciple, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liozhna (later of Liadi), founder of Chabad-Lubavitch. Celebrated throughout the world as the New Year of Chassidism. How to Celebrate Chanukah Kindle the Chanukah Menorah on each of the eight nights of Chanukah. For the dates and times see the calendar below. Use olive oil or paraffin candles large enough to burn until half an hour after nightfall for the lights of the Menorah. Use a Shamesh (service candle) to kindle the lights, and place it in its special place on the Menorah. For the number of lights and the order of kindling see the calendar below. Before kindling recite the blessings, and after kindling recite Hanairos hallolu... See the calendar below for which blessings to say. All members of the family should be present at the kindling of the Chanukah lights. Have all young boys kindle their own Chanukah Menorahs and all young girls light their own Shabbat candles. Students and singles who live in a dormitory or in their own apartments, should kindle Menorahs in their own rooms. Chanukah lights are kindled in the front window or by a doorway. On Friday afternoon the Chanukah lights (which will burn until a half-hour after nightfall) are kindled before the Shabbat candles are lit. From the time the Shabbat candles are lit until Shabbat ends and the Havdalah (separation between Shabbat and weekday) prayer is recited the Chanukah Menorah should not be relit, moved or prepared. After this time the Chanukah lights for Saturday night are kindled. Photo by Boruch Ezagui

Tevet 10 Anniversary of start of siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, resulting in destruction of First Temple (422 BCE). Commemorated since then as a public fast day. Tevet 20 RaMBaM (Maimonides), Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (1145-1205), passed away in Cairo, Egypt, and was buried in Tiberias, Israel. Outstanding codifier, commentator, philosopher, physician to Sultan Saladin, and leader of Egyptian Jewry, his brilliant works are studied to this day. It was said of him: From Moses to Moses (i.e. the RaMBaM), there was none like Moses! The Lubavitcher Rebbe has urged all Jews to study daily his Mishneh Torah, authoritative code of Jewish law, or at least the briefer Sefer HaMitzvos. Tevet 24 Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, first leader of Chabad-Lubavitch, passed away. Shevat 10 Rabbi Shalom Sharabi, brilliant and saintly Yemenite Kabbalist, whose works are much revered, passed away. Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, sixth leader of the Chabad- Lubavitch movement, passed away. He is renowned for his devoted efforts in strengthening Judaism in USSR, USA and many other lands. He brought the Chabad movement to America. This day also marks the beginning of the leadership by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. If you will observe the kindling of the Shabbat lights, you will merit to see the lights of the redemption of the Jewish people. --Yalkut Behaloscho Photo by Michael Bukhman

Shevat 15 New Year for trees, when the earliest-blooming trees begin to bud in Israel. It is customary to partake of fruits, especially those for which the Land of Israel is praised in Scriptures. The seven species of Israel are wheat, barley, grape (wine), fig, pomegranate, olive (oil), and date (honey). Many people have the custom of eating carob on this day while others eat jam or preserves from the etrog fruit left over from Sukkot. The kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria, the Arizal, would eat 15 fruits on the 15th of this month. Shevat 22 Yahrtzeit of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, wife of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The Seven Species: The Torah praised the Land of Israel with Seven Species, Wheat, Barley, Grapes, Figs, Pomogranates, Olives and Dates. G-d is bringing you into a land of wheat, barley, grape-vines, figs, and pomegranates; a land of oil-olives and honey. --Deut. 8:7-8 Only these species were allowed tro be brought as offerings in the Holy Temple. How to Celebrate Purim The Fast of Esther To commemorate the day of prayer and fasting which the Jews held before their victory, we fast before Purim, on Mar. 4. Machatzit Hashekel It is a tradition to give 3 half-dollar coins to charity to commemorate the half-shekel given by each Jew in the time of the Holy Temple. This mitzvah, usually performed in the synagogue, should be done on Mar. 4 or Mar. 5, according to your custom. Listen to the Megillah To relive the miraculous events of Purim, we listen to the reading of the Megillah (the Scroll of Esther) on Wednesday night, Mar. 4, and again on Thursday, Mar. 5, during the daytime. Send Gifts of Food On Purim we emphasize the importance of Jewish unity and friendship by sending gifts of food to friends. Send a gift of at least two kinds of ready-to-eat foods (for example, pastry, fruit, beverage) to at least one friend on Mar. 5, during the daytime. Give Gifts to the Needy Concern for the needy is a year-round responsibility for the Jew. On Purim, particularly, it is a special mitzvah to remember the poor. Give charity to at least two, but preferably more, needy individuals on Mar. 5, during the daytime. The mitzvah is best fulfilled by giving directly to the needy. If, however, you cannot find poor people, place at least several coins into pushkas (charity boxes). Even small children should fulfill this mitzvah. Eat the Festive Meal As on all festivals, we celebrate Purim with a special festive meal on Mar. 5, during the daytime, when family and friends gather together to rejoice in the Purim spirit. How to Celebrate Passover Chometz is any food or drink made from wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt or their derivatives, which is forbidden on Passover because it is leavened or fermented. If a food contains even a trace of chometz, we don t eat it, we don t sell it and we make sure not to have any of it in our possession all the days of Passover. How to Prepare 1. Store away all the chometz both food and utensils used throughout the year (and not koshered for Passover). 2. Clean your entire house and office to purge it of all crumbs and small pieces of food. 3. Since the kitchen has been used the whole year long for chometz, it s going to need some work to prepare it for Passover use. Contact us for details. 4. Shop for Passover being careful to buy foods that are only kosher-for-passover. 5. Search and burn and/or sell your chometz before Passover. Contact us for details. Nissan 15-16 Seder Nights The first two nights of Passover, we conduct a Seder a festive, yet solemn event. Nissan 22 Last Day of Passover The eighth day of Passover is traditionally associated with our fervent hope for the coming of Moshiach. Photo by Michoel Ogince

Iyar 18 - Lag B Omer Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, Mishnaic Sage and author of the Zohar, principle work of Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah), passed away. Having fulfilled his mission in this world, he asked that the anniversary be celebrated as a happy day. Iyar 28 Samuel the Prophet, last Judge (ruler) of Israel before the first king, Saul, was anointed, passed away at the age of 52 (880 BCE), and was mourned by the whole nation. He is buried near Jerusalem. Sivan 6-7 Shavuot, a Major Festival Shavuot is a major festival, celebrating an event so important, the world would be an entirely different place without it. 3,325 years ago on this day, the entire Jewish nation stood at the foot of Mount Sinai and the transmission of Torah began from heaven to earth. Shavuot Observances On the morning of May 15, every man, woman and child should attend services to hear the story of the Ten Commandments read from a Torah scroll. It is especially important for children to be there, since they served as our guarantors the first time the Torah was given. Before the main meat meal on the first day of Shavuot, the tradition is to eat a festive dairy meal (not hard cheese). Cheese cake is a big hit. Photo by Michael Bukhman

Tammuz 3 Passing of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, in 1994. The Rebbe s leadership continues to inspire us. He has taught us that with every good deed we do we bring the world one step closer to perfection. Indeed, every kind word we speak, and even our positive thoughts, have a potent beneficial effect. By remembering the Rebbe s vision and by connecting to his purpose, we can hasten the unfolding of the final Redemption, and a better life for all humankind. Tammuz 4 Passing of Rabbeinu Tam, Rabbi Yaakov ben Meir of Romereau in 1171, known as Rabbeinu Tam, he was a grandson of Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, 1040-1105), and one of the primary authors of the Tosaphot commentary on the Talmud; the Bet-Din (rabbinical court) he headed was regarded as the leading Torah authority of his generation. Tammuz 9 Babylonians breached the wall of Jerusalem, 422 BCE (Kings II 25). The Jerusalem Talmud says that the breach actually occurred on Tammuz 17, but so absorbed were the Jews in their troubles that they forgot the exact date. Tammuz 17 This day is observed as one of the five public fast days. It begins the Three Weeks a period of national mourning for the destruction of the two Temples, during which we celebrate no weddings and schedule no festivities. Photo by Meir Pliskin

Av 9 Tisha B Av Saddest day in the Jewish calendar. A 25-hour fast from sunset of the previous evening. Anniversary of the Divine decree that the Jewish People remain in the desert for 40 years. Anniversary of the destruction (by Babylonians under Nebuchadnezar) of the First Temple, and (by Romans under Titus) of the Second Temple (70 CE). Capture by Romans of Beitar, last Jewish fortress to hold out in the Bar Kochba rebellion. Jerusalem was ploughed up and turned into a non-jewish city Aelia Capitolina. In 1492, Av 9 was the last day by which all Jews who would not be baptized had to leave Spain. World War I also began on Av 9. It brought in its wake the Russian Revolution and the conditions which gave rise to Nazism and the Holocaust. Av 15 End of the 40-year decree upon the Jewish People to remain in the desert. Reconciliation of the tribe of Benjamin with the other tribes of Israel. Removal of guards stationed by Jeroboam ben Nevat to prevent pilgrimages of the Ten Tribes of Israel to the Temple in Jerusalem. Permission granted by Romans to bury the dead of Beitar after 14 years. There were no greater holidays to the Jewish People than Av 15 and Yom Kippur. Photo by Meir Perelstein

Av 20 Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, renowned scholar, kabbalist and father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, passed away. The Month of Elul One of the major accusations often leveled at the CEO of the universe is inaccessibility. These charges are entirely unfounded. G-d is everywhere, and from there He awaits your call. And just to prove it, one month before Rosh Hashanah, He devotes an entire month to being as approachable as an Al-mighty Creator can get. Think of it as though the big boss took a stroll through the cubicles, happily chatting with anyone who approaches, giving each his full attention and a warm smile. That is what our sages mean when they call Elul the Month of Divine Compassion. During these days, you can repair all that went amiss from the entire year with study, with charity and good deeds, with meditation and prayer. That is also why we blow the Shofar every day of this month (except Shabbat), as a wake-up call to prepare for the magnificent days to come. We also have our Mezuzos and Tefillin checked during this month. Photo by Michael Bukhman

Tishrei 1-2 Rosh Hashana Rosh Hashana ( Head of the Year ), the Jewish New Year, is celebrated as a two day holiday. On both days of Rosh Hashana we hear during the daytime the sounding of at least the first thirty of the prescribed blasts of the Shofar, the ram s horn. FAST OF Gedaliah Gedaliah was a righteous Jewish governor appointed by the Babylonian conquerors after they destroyed the First Temple. When he was assassinated, our people s plight hit an extreme low. In commemoration, we neither eat nor drink on Sept. 16, from approximately two hours before sunrise until 40 minutes after sunset. Tishrei 10 Yom Kippur Yom Kippur ( Day of Atonement ) is the holiest day in the Jewish year. In addition to the prohibition of work as on the Sabbath, there are five activities specifically prohibited on Yom Kippur, from Tuesday evening, Sept. 22, until Wednesday night, Sept. 23: eating and drinking, anointing oneself with perfumes or lotions, marital relations, washing (for pleasure), wearing leather shoes.
