SEEDS OF GREATNESS MINING THROUGH THE STORY OF MOSHE S CHILDHOOD FOR LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP ש מ ות EXODUS CHAPTER 2 א ו י ל ך א י ש, מ ב ית ל ו י; ו י ק ח, א ת-ב ת-ל ו י. 1 A man went from the house of Levi and he took a daughter of Levi. ב ו ת ה ר ה א ש ה, ו ת ל ד ב ן; ו ת ר א את ו ט וב ה וא, ו ת צ פ נ ה ו ש ל ש ה י ר ח ים. כ י- 2 The woman conceived and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was good and she hid him for three months. ד ו ת ת צ ב ל ו. ל ד ע ה, מ ר חק, א חת ו, מ ה-י ע ש ה 3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him a wicker basket and smeared it with clay and pitch; she placed the child into it and placed it among the reeds at the bank of the river.; and she put the child therein, and laid it in the flags by the river's brink. 4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done with him. 5 Pharaoh s daughter came down to bathe in

ו ת ינ ק ל ך, א ת- ה י ל ד the river; and her maidens walked along the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds and she sent her maidservant and she took it. 6 She opened it, and saw him, the child and behold! A youth was crying. She took pity on him and said, This is one of the Hebrew boys. 7 His sister said to Pharaoh s daughter, Shall I go summon for you a wet nurse from the Hebrew women, who will nurse the boy for him? GOT QUESTIONS? Does anything seem strange in the first verse s description of Moshe s parents? If you were writing the story of someone s childhood, what information would you include? How did Pharaoh s daughter know that Moshe was Jewish? Here is a more sensitive question on the language in the last verse: It starts off by seemingly referring to Moshe as a child (in Hebrew: a Yeled), but then the verse finishes by calling him a youth (in Hebrew: a Na ar). Why the switch in language?

THE CASE OF MOSHE S MISSING PARENTS MAHARAL, GUR ARYEH, IBID. AND YOU MAY ASK: WHY DOESN T THE TORAH MENTION THE NAMES OF MOSHE S FAMILY EXPLICITLY IN THE STORY OF MOSHE S BIRTH? WHY DOES IT REFER TO HIS MOTHER AND FATHER SO VAGUELY AS A MAN FROM THE HOUSE OF LEVI AND A DAUGHTER FROM THE HOUSE OF LEVI.??

CLEARLY, THE TORAH ONLY MENTIONS THE NAMES OF MOSHE S FAMILY MEMBERS MUCH LATER ON (SEE SHEMOS 6:20 AND 15:20). SO WHY DOES THE TORAH AVOID MENTIONING THE NAMES OF HIS PARENTS INITIALLY? IT APPEARS THE REASON FOR THIS IS IN ORDER TO IMPRESS UPON THE READER THAT MOSHE S GREATNESS WAS NOT SOLELY A PRODUCT OF HIS PARENTS. HAD IT MENTIONED HIS PARENTS IT WOULD SEEM THAT HIS GREATNESS WAS PRE-DETERMINED BASED ON HIS UPBRINGING AND HIS GREATNESS WAS SIMPLY A PRODUCT OF HIS FATHER LESSONS TO CONSIDER What message is the Torah trying to impress upon us about greatness by not focusing on Moshe s parents?

ו) ז) THIS IS A HEBREW BOY HOW DID PHARAOH S DAUGHTER KNOW MOSHE WAS JEWISH? APPROACH #1: RASHI The Torah says that the daughter of Pharaoh opened the basket and saw. Who did she see? The simple meaning of the verse is that she saw the child (Moshe). But the midrash interprets that she saw the Divine presence resting on Moshe. The Torah continues and says that Behold! A Youth was crying The verse started by referring to him as a child (Hebrew ילד Yeled) which would seem more appropriate, why did it switch to the term Na ar (נער) which denotes an adolescent? It means to tell us that he had a strong voice like a teenager. The Torah tells us that Moshe s sister (Miriam) specified that she would call a wet nurse from among the Hebrew women. Why did she specify that a Jewish wet nurse? Teaches that Pharaoh s daughter had taken Moshe around to many Egyptian women to nurse him, but he had not nursed from them because he was destined to speak with the Divine presence.

UNDERSTANDING RASHI According to Rashi s explanation, how did Pharaoh s daughter know Moshe was Jewish? According to Rashi why is there a switch in the description of Moshe from a child to a youth? APPROACH #2: BAAL HATURIM The Torah says, And Behold A Youth is crying. This refers to Moshe s brother Ahron who was near Moshe s basket. An allusion to this is found in the numerical value of the of the term נער בכה youth is זה crying is 347, which is equivalent to that of Kohen. this is Aaron the אהרן הכהן והנה נער בכה זה אהרן שהניחתו אצל התבה נער בכה בגימטריא "זה אהרן הכהן " UNDERSTANDING BAAL HATURIM According to the Baal HaTurim why does the Torah use the language child (yeled) and the language na ar (youth)? According to the Baal HaTurim how did Pharaoh s daughter know that Moshe was Jewish? What quality of leadership can we learn from this explanation?
