PADRE S CORNER March 5, 2017 Chad and Jeremy were a British singing duo, whose first hit was entitled "Yesterday's Gone" from 1963. In 1964, was the pretty "If I Loved You" as well as "Willow Weep For Me." They would later have cameos in the "Dick Van Dyke" and Patty Duke Show" plus "Batman" and "My Three Sons." Another hit song from 1964 was "A Summer Song," that featured the verses: "All good things must end someday. Autumn leaves must fall." In the same decade, of hearty melodies, was "The Trouble With Hello Is Goodbye" by Sergio Mendes and Brasilia 75. Listen to this tearjerker on "You Tube" with the words of: "We wandered through the summertime, and drifted into fall. We never thought of winter at all. How foolishly we tossed away the buttercups, the time. Who'd have thought we'd have no more songs to sing, hills to climb... No matter how we tried, the trouble with hello is goodbye." Goodbyes are a part of life as we move out of childhood homes (for me Queens and Stony Point in New York, and Bogota in New Jersey while realizing so many faces would likely not be seen again), high school (still remember songs that marked my athletic and prom memories), leaving companies (recall a decade of service with the Bell Telephone Company), goodbye to the seminary for ordination to the priesthood (followed by the inevitable transfers to new parishes), relationships we thought would lead to friendships or more but sadly withered in the sawdust, deaths of loved ones within family (think daily of my Dad who went to heaven March 25, 2010) and culture (America lost the actresses Florence Henderson, Debbie Reynolds, Patty Duke, Carrie Fisher and Zsa Zsa Gabor as well as actors Gene Wilder, Alan Young, and George Kennedy. There were also announcers Morley Safer plus Joe Garagiola, athletes Arnold Palmer and Gordie Howe with Muhammed Ali, astronaut John Glenn, and First Lady Nancy Reagan), healthy bodies falling prey to illness, innocent pet connections severed by frailty (great cartoon of a dog awaiting his owner in heaven), the year of 2016 leaving for 2017, and even our favorite sports teams moving (Brooklyn Dodgers, Baltimore Colts, Minnesota North Stars). One spiritual epitaph records: "Someday, everything will make perfect sense. So for now, laugh at the confusion, smile through the tears, and keep reminding yourself that everything happens for a reason." In 1972, a tragedy struck in my youth that reminded me of the fragility of life that leads ultimately to the road we call Heaven. On December 31, 1972 I was listening to sports radio as a young boy when word spread that the airplane carrying legendary Pittsburgh Pirates baseball star Roberto Clemente had crashed off of the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico en route to Nicaragua, to drop off earthquake relief supplies. I remember well tearfully praying to God that Roberto be found alive. His body would never be found. Just three months earlier on September 30, he collected his 3000th and final regular season hit. After an incredible career of fifteen appearances in the All Star Game, two World Series championships, and four times the batting champion he was posthumously elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973. In a 1971 interview, Clemente said about the future: "You never know because God tells you how long you're going to be here. So you never know what can happen tomorrow." Shortly after efforts to find Roberto's body had failed, a memorial Mass was held for him at the cathedral in San Juan. Giving up his life for others, as Jesus did, has prompted some interest in declaring him a saint. Pope Francis, through the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington D.C., has issued a letter of interest as has Archbishop Jose Horacio Gomez of Los Angeles, California. Player Neil Walker, whose father played with Clemente, offered this analysis: "He's somebody who lived his life serving others... So if it would happen, I wouldn't be terribly surprised by it " In 1995 I met the son of Roberto Clemente in Yonkers and recently received a signed baseball by his father from 1955, reminding me of the great gift of life God has given to us to be used in His service of others. Many have my signatures on cards, letters, and other correspondence. May they see in me what I see in Roberto Clemente. May God grace us. Father Bill
