July 30, 2017 Collection $5,903.43 Children s $ 11.96 E-Give.. $1,260.00 Today, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew's Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until "the Son of Man has been raised from the dead" (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased," and he assures us that the message is "altogether reliable" (2 Peter 1:17, 19). This is my Son, my beloved. Listen to Him. Families that gather in prayer and worship will be transfigured by the presence of the Lord Jesus. QUESTION OF THE WEEK What peak experience do you hold onto, or what experience holds onto you? How does it help you when it is time to bear your cross and share in Jesus passion?

St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, August 6, 2017 A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR We have great news. Please read the following announcement. ANDY DAVIS ADMISSION TO CANDIDACY Great news! Our own Andy Davis has been appointed by Bishop Thomas to the Formation Program to become a Permanent Deacon for service to the Diocese of Cleveland. He has completed a year of Aspirancy (come and see, more-or-less) and will soon begin a four-year program where he will undergo Spiritual, Intellectual, Pastoral, and Human Formation in preparation for ordained ministry. His wife, Chris, will be (and has been) very involved with all of this. Please pray for Andy, Chris, and their family moving forward. The Rite of Installation will take place at the 5:30 p.m. Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on Sunday, August 13. All are invited to attend. HOT MEALS Once again St. Vincent de Paul Parish is providing the meal for the working poor and homeless held at St. Bernard Church on Wednesday, August 23. Please help us feed these 250 plus members of the Akron area. There are two ways to help. First, consider making a donation to offset the food purchased for the meal. Cash or check donations made payable to St. Vincent de Paul Church, marked on the envelope, "Hot Meals", may be dropped in the collection at any Mass. Second, come and work the meal with us. You must be 14 years of age or older to help serve. We are looking for volunteers to help us 4-7 p.m. Minors must be accompanied by a parent if it is their first time working. If you have any questions, please contact Marimargaret Roberts at 330-608-8930. DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND DONOR ENGAGEMENT St. Vincent Parish and School are seeking a Director of Development and Donor Engagement. This person will be responsible for all fund raising aspects of the Parish Community with specific responsibilities for a major capital project and planned giving. This paid position works 32 hours a week and is healthcare benefits eligible. The salary is commensurate with experience. Please forward your resume to Connie Pacanovsky at Connie@StVincentChurch.com or call Ted Walter at (330) 814-4289 for additional information. RCIA If you are interested in sharing your faith, learning more about our faith, or know of someone, such as your husband, wife, parent, child, or friend, who would like to learn more about our faith, please consider joining R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). We begin sessions on Sunday, September 10, 9:45-10:45 a.m., and will continue to meet on Sundays throughout the year. So that we can better prepare, we ask that you pre-register by calling or emailing Ellen Dies at 330-535-3135 x101 or ellen@stvincentchurch.com. Even if you have been away from the church, we welcome you with open arms! ST. VINCENT PRAYER & SCRIPTURE STUDY TEAM Meet on the first and third Mondays (August 7 and August 21) in the Scullen Room at 7 p.m. for the Scriptural Rosary and Bible Study. All are welcome! "Saying the Hail Mary and the Rosary: Those who accept this devotion should have a great love for the Hail Mary, or, as it is called, the Angelic Salutation. Few Christians, however enlightened, understand the value, merit, excellence and necessity of the Hail Mary. Our Blessed Lady herself had to appear to men of great holiness and insight (St. Dominic)...to convince them of the richness of this prayer." From The Secret of the Rosary by St. Louis de Montfort.
