areas of adult faith formation, sacramental preparation, youth ministry, marriage ministry, and more. A number of Spanish-language resources are also available on FORMED, and new materials are being added regularly. Here s the best part: every parish in the archdiocese has received a free one-year subscription. This means that every parishioner has ready access to all of the resources Formed has to offer. Registration is very simple. Visit formed.org, and use our parish access code: DGJWJK. If you have any problem gaining access, there is a very responsive customer service team ready and able to assist. I ll write more about this as time goes on; in the meantime, I d be very interested to get feedback from anyone who takes advantage of this new service. As noted in last week s bulletin, we would like to establish an ensemble of musicians to play at the 5:00pm Sunday Mass. There is a core of good, liturgically appropriate music that calls for instruments like the piano, guitar, woodwinds, and brass, which we d like to introduce. If anyone is interested in learning more, please speak with me after Mass, or drop me a line during the week (pastor@sjegoshen.org). Recently, I read an interesting article by the famous Catholic teacher and writer, Regis Martin, about texting. He writes: What tipped me off was finding out that when young people order things (pizza, for example), they don t like to do it over the phone. They ll order online. That way, they don t have to talk to anyone. Is this, I wonder, the new normal? And if so, what does it mean? It is certainly not anything I d recommend. Or even recognize, come to think of it. And not because, given my pathetically inadequate computer skills, I ve no choice but to pick up the phone to order a pizza. It is because my tendency is not to pick up the phone at all, but to go out and buy the damn pizza. Why is that? Well, for the same reason I ve resisted doing online courses, even when the money is good. It s because I prefer real presence. I am not one of those fussy little Cartesians, you see, whose notion of a good time is dining out on clear and distinct ideas. Give me a thick juicy steak every time. And there is nothing more satisfying, let me tell you, than sharing it with a real person (even if you re buying). Not some disincarnate spirit, mind you, who is only virtually there; but a flesh and blood human being. Who wants to have pizza with a computer? At the time I was ordained a priest in 1999, I think I had sent a grand total of two emails (the seminary had only gone online shortly before). Since then, email has become a staple in the way we undertake our ministries. It can be a chore keeping up with it, but I find it very useful, mainly for scheduling appointments or getting information out to a large group. One of the well-documented downsides of email is the tendency for some people to use it in place of inperson conversations. (The same could be said of texting, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and every other social media platform, but that s for another day). I ve personally received emails about matters that would have been better addressed face-to-face; this is not helped by the choice of language and/or the level of vitriol they usually contain. Here s my point: I ve noticed that, with increasing frequency, people tend to write things in emails that they probably wouldn t say directly to my face. And I m not alone: many of my colleagues and friends, including other priests, have had the same experience. Once it s in print, there s no taking it back and there s no telling how far it might travel. Many a small issue has been blown horribly out of proportion, simply because it sparked an email chain! I learned the hard way, a long time ago, to wait before responding to those kinds of emails; I ve also learned that the better response is not another email, but a face -to-face meeting. The vast majority of folks are receptive but sometimes, they re not. And that saddens me. But for those that are, the newly opened lines of communication can be a breath of fresh air and can alleviate a lot of misunderstanding. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann Page 5-446 St. John

This article appeared in Crisis Magazine online on August 11, 2016. This is Part 3 of three parts. Nature s Own Reliquary RICHARD UPSHER SMITH, JR. Such is the shrine as I experienced it this summer: going down into the ravine, praying the Rosary before the touching pietà, walking from statute to shrine to chapel there and on the green above, and, when tired, reading about the Jesuit martyrs as I sat in the peaceful, sun-dappled square where bloodthirsty Ossernenon once stood. The Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs is a deeply holy site, and it will be a holy fountain of the new evangelization, if only Catholics will talk it up, go there on pilgrimage, prayer for its mission, and give their money and perhaps their volunteer labor to the brave lay people who have undertaken not only to keep the shrine open, but also to support the return of priests in residence at the Shrine as soon as possible, to stimulate vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and to inspire a new generation of Saints! What better place for a pilgrimage in our time! God willing, we shall never suffer as the Jesuit martyrs and St. Kateri suffered, but they are golden examples of holy heroism for us, who, if we do not face the physical ferocity of the pagan Mohawks, still face a world as hostile to our Lord Jesus Christ and his Blessed Mother as they did, and who must learn to suffer in it with the same spirit of joy and peace as they had. Richard Upsher Smith, Jr., teaches in the Department of Classics and in the Honors Program at Franciscan University of Steubenville. New Mobile Health Center to visit St. Joseph s in Middletown!
