Staff Connection... Dear friends, Parish Mission Statement As an authentically Catholic parish, we exist to proclaim the gospel truth, serve those in need, and give praise to God with reverent faith. January 8, 2017 Immaculate Conception Church In today s gospel we heard about the gifts brought to Jesus by the Wise Men. I d like to give all of you this weekend a small gift - the simple gift of realizing that God is still with us! The gift I m going to give you is a reminder of what I shared with you last weekend the gift of silence! We are so busy in our lives that we rarely take the time to be quiet and realize God is always with us! So, be still and enjoy the gift of Emmanuel God with us! I hope you enjoy your gift! This weekend we celebrate Epiphany. Epiphany means to reveal, to show, or to make known. We know, as least intellectually, that God is not remote from us that God is actively involved in our lives that God cares that God is concerned. So where is God? God is present in all the epiphanies of our life each day! Perhaps we think of these epiphanies only in one way only in the good and nice events of our day. I stand on a beach and watch a perfect sunset and say to myself Yes, there is a God. I receive a gift of forgiveness from a friend and say to myself Yes, there is a God. However, as believers we know that God comes to us in the mysteries of both the crib and the cross. The depth of God s being is made visible in the vulnerability of a child as well as in the perfect weakness of a man on a cross. We encounter God in all the events of our lives when our best efforts at work go unappreciated, God is present! When we make an A in a difficult class at school, God is present! When our child is born, God is present! When our parent dies, God is present! On those mornings when we wake up, sit on the edge of the bed, rub our eyes, think of the problems we face, worry about whether our life has any real meaning, and wonder if there really is a God God is present! And yes the epiphanies of life are not just about us! For God is present in the way we serve our neighbor. God is forever the beggar outside our door, or the victim left on the side of the road, as well as the voices of those who have no one to plead for their needs. We are not just called to be sensitive to God s presence within our own lives we are also called to extend God s presence through our care for others. Need more examples? How about these: When we reach into our pocket and give to the poor, God is present! When we hug our child, God is present! When we work to correct an injustice, God is present! And when we pray with a friend in the hospital, God is present! As I thought about the epiphanies in my own life, I recall one in particular. I was in the hospital recovering from surgery - our young daughter Caitlin (32 years of age now) was two floors below me with a fractured elbow suffered the night after my surgery and my wife Joan had our infant son Brendan to care for all by herself. I could do nothing to help my family at that moment of need. I felt so helpless and so very alone. And then a friend appeared with the Eucharist for me told me that other friends were taking care of everything we needed. And I absolutely realized that I was not alone that God truly is always with us! Sometimes all we have to do is take the time to open our eyes and see to open our ears and hear to open our hearts and feel His presence. May we all see and hear and feel the epiphanies of God in our lives this day and every day in the new year of 2017!
