September 25, 2016 Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Stewardship Reflection on Readings AM 6: 1A, 4-7; PS 146: 8-10; 1 TM 6: 11-16; LK 16: 19-31 Throughout his letters St. Paul gives more than hints as to what we should be doing to seek holiness and to live lives that stress Christian virtues. In fact, his comments are often direct and to the point. The excerpt from Paul s First Letter to Timothy, our Second Reading for today, contains one of those passages, which though brief, is the formula for seeking holiness and living lives of stewardship. Paul says to Timothy, and thus to us, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Of course, we are aware that in spite of its simplicity, that is a group of instructions that can be very difficult to really live out. Yet, that is exactly our calling. It all begins with pursuing righteousness. We tend to think of the meaning of that as being goodness, as in pursuing being a good person, but its real roots are deeper than that. Based upon the original Greek a more accurate translation might be pursuing justice. More accurately the translation would be pursuing justice as Jesus defines it. That is really our charge to seek lives of stewardship and discipleship in response to the Lord s call to us. The Greek philosopher Socrates said, All men s souls may be immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine. The friars seek to respect, preserve and integrate into our Catholic faith the beautiful customs and crafts of the three cultures. Most of missions are small and very poor. Your offering will support their ministries. Bible Study Our next bible study series will be, "Follow Me: Getting to Know Jesus through the Gospel of John". Experience the Joy of Following Christ Following Christ takes more than simply believing in him or doing what he asks of us. Jesus wants you to be more than just a believer He wants you to be his disciple and friend. Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John is your guide to a personal encounter with Christ. As the Good Shepherd, Jesus seeks after us. He comes to meet us and beckons us to follow him. He calls us to be his disciples, to trust him, to open ourselves to his merciful love, and to love others as he has loved us. Follow Me invites you to experience the joy of a renewed friendship with Christ. This is an 8 week study. We will begin meeting Monday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Gabriel's. Each session lasts about 90 minutes. Cost of the session will be approximately $25. Please call Diane Littleton 282-3406 or email diane.littleton@gmail.com to let her know you are interested by October 2 to assure we have enough study sets. Briarfest As baby steps go, it was a pretty big one. The first Briarfest Walk to End Hunger, benefitting Mercy s Gate, attracted 146 walkers on Sept. 10, the first seriously cool morning since summer began. The Walk to End Hunger went 1.2 miles from St. Gabriel to the King Soopers at Union Boulevard and Briargate Parkway. It was the publicly visible culmination of several weeks of food collection at St. Gabriel, Academy Christian Church, and King Soopers. By the time all the food was delivered to Mercy s Gate on Monday, Sept. 12, the Walk to End Hunger had collected 2,686.6 pounds of food. THAT S 1.3 TONS OF FOOD!! The idea for the walk originated last spring, when Fr. Kirk proposed transforming the Bolt from a let s do something fun for ourselves activity to an ecumenical, let s do something good for others activity -- something that involves a wider number of people, and finishes with a public expression of the Briarfest motto, Unity in Community. Academy Christian Church responded to the call and placed a food-collection bin in its gathering space. Several Academy Christian members took part in the walk, under a banner displaying their church name. Weeks before the walk, King Soopers enthusiastically adopted the idea, and assembled more than 50 grocery sacks with food items needed by Mercy s Gate. They sold EVERY BAG, AND MADE MORE! The long-term vision for the Walk to End Hunger is to enlist many of the Briargate-area churches that partner with Mercy s Gate in the food drive, and in the walk itself. We hope to generate some good-natured competition. The first year taught us some lessons that should help make the 2017 effort larger and even more successful. King Soopers General Manager Pam Jones greeted the 146 walkers at her store on Sept. 10 and pledged to add other King Soopers stores to the 2017 effort. Mercy s Gate Executive Director Jason Dilger, who participated in the walk, thanked the crowd and said he will encourage more partner churches to join the food drive next year. Thank you to all who made a donation of food, and to all the volunteers who helped transport food, load trucks and walk with us on Sept. 10. Get ready for an even bigger Walk to End Hunger next year! Weekly faith topic Church interior Paul Turner On the inside Catholic church buildings look different from one another, but they have many common features. Upon walking through the doorway of a church, you should be able to notice several things. Narthex: Many churches bring you first into a narthex or gathering area. There you can meet other people or view bulletins and posters. Nave: The body of the church is the nave. The word is related to navy because a church interior somewhat resembles a ship. The congregation assembles in the nave. Sanctuary: The place w here m ost of the action takes place is the sanctuary. It is set apart from the nave by its height and spaciousness. The three principal furnishings of the sanctuary are the chair, where the priest stands to begin the service; the ambo, where the Liturgy of Word unfolds; and the altar, the center of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Choir: There m ay be another area designated for musicians. In older churches musicians entered a loft behind the congregation, because they created music to be heard, not shared. Today a choir area is more commonly visible to the entire assembly, where the musicians can better lead everyone in singing. Sacristy: The vessels, vestm ents, and other item s needed for Mass are stored in one or more sacristies. These are not readily visible upon entering a church, but they are essential for the smooth flow of worship. Other items: Statues, Stations of the Cross, votive candles, the tabernacle, and other items may be seen in the church. These occupy devotional areas that are not essential for the celebration of the Mass, but they are part of the environment one customarily sees on entering a Catholic church.
