2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL From the Pastor His mercy is from generation to generation. Luke 1:50 As you know, we have chosen these words as the title of our Capital Campaign, From Generation to Generation. No words could be more descriptive of this moment in time for Queen of All Saints Parish and also of its place in history. Under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary we are acutely aware of those generations of parishioners who have gone before us and who have provided us with one of the most beautiful parish campuses in the world. At the same time we are aware of our own responsibility to ensure that those who come after us will have similar opportunities here. What we have received we must pass on. That s how it goes with the truths of the faith; that s how it goes with buildings that teach those truths. Fifty years ago our ancestors made significant sacrifices to ensure that they had suitable places for worship, for education in the Catholic faith and for providing community service. Their vision also encompassed future generations of believers. We are the beneficiaries of their common vision and their individual sacrifices. The bequest they made to us we now must make to the generations that will comprise Queen of All Saints Parish fifty years from now. Many of us will be gone, but our children will remain. My fervent prayer is that those who follow us through the doors of the Basilica, the school and the Benedict Center fifty years from now will proclaim with Mary, His mercy is from generation to generation. Almost every week now there is some good news to share on our Capital Campaign. Here s the latest. We have raised over $3.5 million and almost 300 families have joined the Campaign and made a pledge over the next five years. That means we are still $1.5 million short of our goal of $5 million and 250 families short of our expected participation. Those who were able to make leadership and major gifts to the Campaign have already joined. Now the challenge is to encourage the rest of our parishioners to make their pledges. The Campaign will end before Christmas, so the time is now for those who have not yet joined the Campaign to do so. Campaign materials have been sent to every parishioner with a pledge card and return envelope. I cannot emphasize strongly enough that this is a campaign of the many not the few. It is a campaign for all the parishioners of Queen of All Saints not just a few. It is an opportunity for our generation to say thanks to those who have come before us by providing for those who will come after us. There is no room for a what s in it for me? attitude. If our ancestors in this parish felt that way, we would not have the facilities we have now in which to worship, learn and practice the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. In justice we owe it to them to match their sacrifices. So what are we going to do with all this money? The project for our campaign is the comprehensive renovation of the old convent, the Benedict Center. That renovation is focused on providing a spiritual, educational and ministerial center for Queen of All Saints Parish for the generations to come. The Benedict Center is one of the jewels of our campus, but it is underused and it is deteriorating at a very costly rate. For many years the Benedict Center was a convent that housed the Benedictine sisters who taught in our school and ministered in our parish. It served its purpose in its day very well, but that day is now gone and we must position this valuable asset for the future. The

exterior of the building is still quite beautiful and compliments the other buildings on the campus beautifully. It would be foolish to tear it down. The decision to focus on the renovation of the Benedict Center for our campaign was really a no-brainer. It easily emerged from the many discussions and more formal consultations that were conducted over the past two and a half years. A comprehensive renovation of the Benedict Center will have something for everyone in the parish. The consolidation of our Pre-School, the improvement of the facilities for several of our religious education programs, the revitalization of the Chapel, the creation of space for adult faith formation and meetings of parish groups and organizations and the addition of badly needed storage space are among the specific objectives in this comprehensive renovation. Right now, for example, we are trying to pack far too many meetings of parish groups and organizations into an insufficient number of meeting spaces. Often the spaces that are available are inappropriate and even unsuited for their intended uses. I see this over and over again as I attend the many weekly meetings of the over 50 groups and organizations that comprise the very active family of Queen of All Saints Parish. Most parishioners don t know it but we have over a thousand meetings a year on this campus. As we come to the end of our Campaign, I am even more convinced that the comprehensive renovation of the Benedict Center and the consequential development of some of the spaces in our Keene and Lemont school buildings was the right choice. First I was convinced of this by listening for the past two and a half years to the people who have served on the parish s formal consultative bodies: Parish Council, School Council and Finance Council, as well as to the leaders of the various parish groups and organizations. And now I am even more convinced by the success which the Campaign has achieved. Thanks to the tireless work of our campaign volunteers and the generosity of almost 300 families, we are within sight of our ambitious goal. If you have not joined this bold adventure, now is the time. God bless you. 5th GRADE SHARE CHRISTMAS MASS Saturday, December 10th at the 5:00pm Mass, all the 5th graders and their families are invited to celebrate a special grade level Mass together. This year our children will be participating in a special service project that will take place prior to the Mass. We have been assigned a family from Catholic Charities that is in need this Christmas. Our plan is to go shopping as a group this afternoon (Sunday, December 4th). After we shop, we ask that the children write a reflection about their experience helping another family in need at the holidays. We will collect their reflections the week before our Mass and we hope to hear a few of them read at the Mass Saturday. Please email Michelle Smith at scomish6@me.com if you or your child is interested in signing up to lend a hand with shopping or at the Mass. Please include your name, your child s name, email, if they would like to participate during the Mass as a reader, petitioner, usher, or gift bearer. f tewardship Stewardship on Gaudete Sunday A Day of Joy Stewardship is, of course, based upon an attitude of gratitude and today is a day to focus on the joy that results from that gratitude. Father Henri Nouwen was a well known Catholic priest, professor, writer, and theologian. In describing the significance of this particular day, Father Nouwen clarified the difference between joy and happiness. He said, While happiness is dependent upon external conditions, joy is the experience of knowing that we are unconditionally loved by God and nothing not sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death can take that love away. Joy can be present in the midst of sadness. This joy that is reflected in lives of stewardship was also emphasized by Pope Francis, who said in his homily for Gaudete Sunday in 2014, Today is a day of joy. Rather than fretting about all we have not done or accomplished to prepare for Christmas during Advent, we need to think of all the good things God, and life, has given us. We want things to go according to our plan and our schedule. Any change brings anxiety and fear. Through daily prayer we better align ourselves with God s will and His plan, which is far better than anything we can come up with on our own. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Second Sunday of Advent December 4, 2016 21
