The Lateran Basilica is the official Church of Rome and the Pope, not St. Peter with which we tend to associate the Vatican. The first reading from Ezekiel speaks of the temple and the holy, living waters which flow from it. Ezekiel 47 reminds us that what occurs inside the church building is incredibly important, the Eucharist, called in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the source and summit of our Christian life. Churches and holy waters are a principal part of our Catholic faith. We enter the church through Baptism, and as we enter our Catholic churches, we find holy water to remind us of that Baptism and to prompt us to remember that we are in a holy place, a place where we gather as a community, united as the Body of Christ. We are the stewards of this church, this holy place where we can disregard the burdens of the world and join together to receive the life giving waters of the Word and the Eucharist. Yes, we are the church, but there is more to it than that. As Paul wrote to the Ephesians: In him you are also being built together into a dwelling place for God. Stewardship: Time, Talent and Treasure July 1 - October 31, 2014 $775,629.39 July 1 - October 31, 2013 $836,122.69 Difference ($60,493.30) This is actual dollars for the first 4 months. I m confident that we will change this trend as we near the end of the calendar year. But a reminder, we are counting on you to stay current with your pledge. That is the only way that this works. If you are behind in your pledge, please do your best to get caught up. Thank you and God bless you for all that you do for our parish. Tom Nickel, Business Manager For we are God s fellow workers 1 Corinthians 3:9 We are called to help God build His kingdom on earth. We are His eyes, ears, hands and voice on Earth. By giving of our first fruits of our time, talent and treasure we help fulfill God s call.

Faith Formation Team Bookshelf John XXIII: The Medicine of Mercy By Massimo Faggioli Often referred to as Good Pope John by Catholics and non-catholics alike, Angelo Roncali, Pope John XXIII, is perhaps the first Pope which the Church knew. The combination of his personality and the growth of mass media allowed more people than ever to experience a Pope as a person. Massimo Faggioli offers a rich and insightful portrait. His sources include the complete edition of the private diaries of the future John XXIII. This treasure of personal notes of the future pope means this biography offers a more complete and nuanced understanding of Angelo Roncalli than is available anywhere else in English at this time. In his homily for the cannonization of Pope John XXIII this Fall, Pope Francis remarked that John XXIII showed an exquisite openness to the Holy Spirit. He let himself be led and he was for the Church a pastor, a servant-leader. Massimo Faggioli is assistant professor of theology at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. This book is published under the sponsorship of the Benedictine monks of St. John s Abbey in Collegeville, MN.
