THE UPSTART Volume No. 14, Issue No. 05 - May Edition Hours of Operation LODGE OFFICERS Exalted Ruler Vinnie Alianiello, PER Leading Knight Vacant Loyal Knight Vacant Lecturing Knight Michael Savage Secretary Treasurer Scott Tackus Tiler Daniel Vallier Esquire Michael Luna Chaplain Kenneth MacMurtry Inner Guard Aaron Lajoie BOARD OF TRUSTEES Five Year Don Coville Four Year Douglas Beeghly, PER Three Year Stephen Del Rosso, PER Two Year Michael Perleoni, PER One Year Gerald McDonald Exalted Ruler s Message W e have made it through the first month of the Elk year. I thank everyone that helped out and made our Installation of Officers a memorable event. If you didn t come to the Lodge for the Early Bird dinner you missed a good time. There are many dinners and events coming up, are you going to be there? Are you up to it? I bet you are! On May 10 we will have the Lodge clean up you need to be there. Last month I challenged you to get active if you are not already. It s time to take up that challenge. So you may say there is not much to do if you don t shoot or drink. Well guess what? It s your Lodge so you can do something about it. You could start a card league or any idea you may have. See myself or one of the Officers and we can make it happen if it is viable. If you are a shooter you may want to start a shooting competition, see the Range Committee to make it happen. How about running a function? We should be doing at least one per month on top of the ones that are already happening. We have around 600 members if we could get at least 20% active we will be doing well. That s only 120 members. I know we can do better than that. You can make a difference. We can make the Lodge family friendly with events for members children. We have many projects around the Lodge that need to be done. Projects such as remodeling the hall restrooms and painting the hall. We need to repave under the pavilion, at the trap range and the members parking lot. I personally think we need to redo/update the kitchen. To do this we need to raise money. So here is my next challenge, raise a minimum of $100,000.00 within the next year. Some will say we can t do that. Well if all 600 members each raised $100.00 we would be at $60,000.00 and that would be a good start. Just think going Mon. Thurs. 4 PM 8 PM Friday 3 PM 10 PM Saturday Noon 9 PM Sunday Noon 7 PM Permittee: Lee Littlefield glastonburyelks.org out for an evening can easily go over $100.00 as many restaurants. If you have ate at the Lodge you know the food is better and a real deal. At the end of May we have Memorial Day please participate. In June is Flag Day these events are what Elkdom is about. So make sure you take up my challenge. Thank you. Elk of the Month James Bernier The bar was experiencing a bad RFI outlet which kept popping on one of the coolers. James was called and did not hesitate to step up and replace it without issue. Now you have another place to park, at least for a month! Thank you James! N e v e r C r i t i c i z e a V o l u n t e e r House Committee News Happy May! I have accepted the position of House Committee Chairman, and look forward to supporting the Lodge in all its works; however, we cannot do this ourselves. As our Exalted Ruler stated in last month s Upstart, we too challenge each member to step up and support the Lodge in some manner. For those of you who support our, we thank you, but will be instituting a new policy of requiring purchasing of tickets prior to the event. Additionally at times some of the dinners will have a cut-off day, and number of tickets sold. The membership of the Lodge has asked for way to get a hold of those persons running an event, hence we ve begun Committee Corner. Feel free to contact any of them!! Memorial day weekend hours (depending on patrons): Friday 5/23-3:00PM-9:00PM Saturday 5/24-12:00PM-8:00PM Sunday 5/25-12:00PM-6:00PM Monday 5/26-12:00PM-6:00PM Drink Specials this Month Bud Light Platinum - $2.00 Bud Black Crowne - $2.00 Guinness bottles - $3.00 Jim Sponzo House Committee Chairman Are YOU one of our Friends on Face Book? NO? Why not? When you become our friend on facebook you get to: Check out photos of lodge events; Get updates to events being held at your lodge, and much, much more. So visit us at facebook.com/glastonburyelks2202. Spring Clean Up The Lodge will conduct our annual grounds clean-up on Saturday May 10, 2014, starting at 8AM. Our grounds are spacious, but the area that needs the most TLC is minimal. Most work is not demanding but we do have several projects to tackle. Any questions please contact any one of the Trustees or officers at the Lodge; a sign-up sheet will be at the bar. Any and all support for clean up will be appreciated. We also ask you to bring your own tools if you have them. This include leaf blowers and brooms. Lodge Trustees and Officers Clomp of the Hoof!...to Dave Poulin, and Dennis Claffey, PDD for preparing the Early Bird dinner. Mike Dondi for running a successful Pig Dinner, along with all his cast of supporters setting up and cleaning!
