Word of Life Reading I: I Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a Surely the Lord s anointed is here before him. Reading II: Ephesians 5:8-14 You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Gospel: John 9:1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38 Do you believe in the Son of Man? Looking Ahead Reading I: 1 Jeremiah 31:31-34 I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Reading II: Hebrews 5:7-9 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered. Gospel: John 12:20-33 Father, save me from this hour. Practice of Charity Today throughout the world there are orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children with the same feelings some handicapped, hearing-impaired, or blind. They too, wait for the healing touch of Jesus. In India, Northeast Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association provides the means necessary to shelter, feed, clothe and school these children. Through a person-to-person child sponsorship program, a benefactor can contribute to the support of an individual child. Call 800-442-6392 or visit the Web site (www.cnewa.org) to find out how you might become the healing touch of Jesus for a needy child. The Catholic Daughters court #1173 at St. Michael's sponsor a needy child from this group. Ask them how it helps their child. The 5 Precepts of the Church Does it take a lot to be a member of the Church? Our basic minimum has 5 requirements. 1. Attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation and honor the 3 rd Commandment: Rest from unnecessary work on these days. 2. Observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. 3. Confess your sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once/year. 4. Receive Holy Communion at least during the Easter season. 5. Help to provide for the needs of the Church. Remind your family members who will accompany you on Easter that now is the time to make amends. God is always calling sinners home. Will you help too? Evangelization EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The eyes of all look to you, Lord, and you give them their food in due season. Come visit Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. Eucharistic Adoration takes place in our parish every Thursday at St. Michael s (Penn Yan) and Friday at St. Januarius (Naples) beginning after the 8:00 a.m. Mass until noon. Year of the Eucharist Around Christ in the Eucharist the Church grows as the people, the temple and family of God one holy, Catholic and apostolic. When the priest says Go, the Mass is ended. all should feel they are sent as missionaries of the Eucharist to carry to every environment the great gift received. In fact, anyone who encounters Christ in the Eucharist cannot fail to proclaim through his or her life the merciful love of the Redeemer. (Catholic Update, Eucharist: Food for Mission, 2004) WE MADE IT! Thanks to your generosity the parish has made our goal for the Catholic Ministries Appeal for 2017-18. So far 209 contributors have pledged 100.95%. Our goal was $59,788. Again, thanks to all who helped in any way to make this possible. Holy Thursday and Easter Vigil If you have bells, please bring them to these Masses to ring during the Gloria. Bells are another sign of our joy! Family Faith Formation in April In order for families to gather on Easter, the schedule for the monthly meets will be adjusted. Therefore, PY families will meet on 4/8, Naples families on 4/15, Prattsburgh families Youth and the Sacrament of Confirmation In Baptism God s grace was given. Confirmation completes this grace and bestows the power of the Holy Spirit so that the grace and faith we experience is strong enough to carry us and share with others. If spiritually your child is ready to make this commitment, please contact Patty by email or phone. The two year preparation period begins no sooner than 8th grade. There will be a week of Summer Intensive classes with monthly meets for continued formation and service each year. Blessing of the Baskets Fr. Felicjan will bless Easter food on Holy Saturday, March 31st at noon in the Chapel at St. Michael's and at 1pm in the chapel at St. Januarius. Page 3 of 6
Peace & Justice Operation Rice Bowl We encounter Jesus this week in Jerusalem, a community he knew well. We prayerfully enter our own communities too, encountering those who are hungry and thirsty, those who need our help. How does our Lenten journey motivate us to serve those we meet in our daily lives? Visit crsricebowl.org for more. Keep Our Food Cupboards Full this Winter... The local food cupboards around OLOL always need your help. Along with regular food items, don t forget paper and cleaning products. Because of limited storage space for the Penn Yan food pantry at the Baptist Church, we are asked not to include articles of clothing in our collection box in St. Michael's vestibule. Keep up the good work of bringing food and paper goods and drop the clothing off at the Once Again Shop. A Veteran s Way of the Cross If you are a veteran, or someone you know is a veteran, and would be interested in a special series of presentations on the Way of the Cross, please join Fr. Jim Jaeger at St. Mary s Church in Bath, NY. Each evening focuses on one station. The reflection afterwards encourages veterans to identify with Jesus in his Passion as their comrade in suffering and focuses on a specific aspect of veteran life-experience. Each session allows time for prayer, as well as for personal reflection and group sharing. The goal: for participants to open themselves up together to new hope and healing in their lives through the perspectives found in the stations. This is only open to veterans. Dates: Friday, Feb. 23, Friday, March 2, Friday, March 9, Thursday, March 15, Friday, March 23 and Friday, March 30, all at 7 pm. We need YOU! The Stewardship committee is looking for members to be part of our team. We need to fill 3 year around vacancies and 2 seasonal (snowbird) vacancies. Here's your chance to help invigorate YOUR parish. Help from all worship sites is appreciated. Specifically we need 2 from St. Michael and 1 from St. Januarius. The 2 snowbird vacancies are from St. Januarius. Contact Cathy Matulewicz at 315 536-7155 or amatule@peoplepc.com or see Father Leo. Got An Hour? Lent is here and if you have an hour, we have a Rosary Group every Monday at 4 pm. Join us and meditate on the life of Jesus while praying the Mysteries of the Rosary. Our Gifts Stewardship Excess Baggage & How To Unload It Experienced travelers learn how much baggage is just enough. They take what they need and leave behind the non essentials that would only be a burden. To move freely, they travel light. Visitor, traveler, pilgrim whatever word we use each one of us is passing through. How we go through life depends a lot on what each of us decides is essential in the things we own, the attachments we form, the ideas that shape our lives.. Women s Weekend Retreat at Notre Dame Retreat House Faith, Hope and Love The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that The theological virtues are the foundations of Christian moral activity. This years retreat will focus on building a firm foundation of Faith in which Hope will grow and Love will blossom. Join us as we discover how these three virtues :inform and give life to all other virtues. {CCC, 1813} Contact Notre Dame Retreat House 585-394-5700 Volunteer With the Sunday Bus Many of you know that the Penn Yan Area Council of Churches operate the Sunday Bus to take homebound and nursing home residents to worship on Sunday mornings in Penn Yan. This ministry operates on the dedication of volunteers who drive the bus each Sunday. We are in need of more volunteers who would be interested in driving the bus. With the number of drivers we have now, the commitment is once a month for the most part. If we had more drivers to share the Sunday driving, we would be able to spread out the driving to not be as often. We are also seeking people who would be willing to be substitute volunteer riders on Sunday mornings. This ministry is very rewarding for all who participate as you see smiles on the residents who are able to ride to church to worship with fellow church members, feel the outdoors and even hear a bird sing! It only takes about 5 hours on a Sunday morning and you don t need a special drivers license to do this volunteering. Contact Jennifer Jensen at 315-536-8281 for more information. 2018 Cash Bash to benefit St. Michaels School Cash Bash tickets are available at St. Michaels School and the Nest Egg on Main Street in Penn Yan.
