ST. PAUL S UNITED CHURCH PALM SUNDAY/ALL AGES WORSHIP SUNDAY, March 24, 2013 *When you see this sign, please stand as you are able. PALM SUNDAY PROCESSION (All who are able and willing are invited to join in the procession that will begin outside the front of the church) *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #123 Hosanna, Loud Hosanna WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE As we light this Christ candle, may it remind us that Christ is in us and in Our world. INTROIT: Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place, I can feel God s mighty power and God s Grace. I can feel the brush of angel s wings I see glory on each face, Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place. OPENING PRAYER Cayley Black O Holy One, we come prepared to cheer on our holy leader and hallowed child of Wisdom. Jesus, the anointed one. Our need is as great today as it was for those ancient pilgrims to honour and salute the presence of truth and beauty and goodness. For we have wandered far from Wisdom, and we find ourselves cheering for all the wrong things and all the wrong people. Now we join in with this holy procession of hope, that we might look into the heart of Christ and see our own sacred heart reflected back, empowering us to stay with Him, and stay with our own deep integrity, when the forces of chaos conspire to shake our conviction and make peace with an unholy convention. Amen (from If Darwin Prayed by Bruce Sanguin) OFFERTORY PRAYER GIVING OF OUR GIFTS (Today the offering will not be brought forward) OFFERTORY ANTHEM City of God Daniel F. Schutte (Please remain seated for the hymns during THE PASSION but stand for the final Hymn #135) PASSION The Story of Jesus during Holy Week Jesus Cleanses the Temple (based on Luke 19: 45-47) Jesus Celebrates the Passover (based on Luke 22:14-23, 31-34)

Choir: #466 Eat This Bread Hymn #133 Go to Dark Gethsemane vs 1 Go to dark Gethsemane, you that feel the tempter s power; your Redeemer s conflict see; watch with him one bitter hour; turn not from his grief away: learn from him to watch and pray. Hymn #133 See him at the Judgment Hall vs 2 See him at the judgment hall, beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned; see him meekly bearing all; love to all his soul sustained. Shun not suffering, shame or loss: learn from Christ to bear the cross. Hymn #132 vs 1,2,3 Bitter was the Night vs 1 Bitter was the night, thought the cock would crow forever. Bitter was the night, before the break of day. Jesus Prays in the Garden (based on Luke 22: 39-46) Jesus is Arrested (based on Luke 22: 47-53) Peter Denies Jesus (based on Luke 22: 54-62) vs 2 vs 3 Saw you passing by told them all I didn t know you. Bitter was the night before the break of day. Told them all a lie, and I told it three times over. Bitter was the night before the break of day. Choir # 137 vs 1 The Love that Clothes Itself in Light Jesus is put on Trial (based on Luke 22: 63-32:25)

*Hymn #135 Beneath the Cross of Jesus all verses Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand; the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land, a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat and the burden of the day. Upon the cross of Jesus my eyes at times can see the very dying form of one who suffered there for me; and from my smitten heart, with tears, two wonders I confess, the wonder of his glorious love, and my unworthiness. I take, O cross, your shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face, content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss, my sinful self my only shame, my glory all, the cross. Jesus is put to Death (based on Luke 23: 26-49) Waiting We ask that the congregation refrain from any applause and after the singing of Stay With Us Through the Night leave the sanctuary in silence, to remind us that Easter had not yet come and that our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. * SUNG BENEDICTION Stay with us through the night. Stay with us through the pain. Stay with us, blessed stranger, till the morning breaks again. Stay with us through the night. Stay with us through the grief. Stay with us, blessed stranger, till the morning brings relief.
