Second Sunday in Advent December 7, 2014 We celebrate the first moment of Mary s existence as a wonderful springtime of Grace. This does not in any way suggest that God is playing whimsically with the law of human solidarity in sin. Mary is no spoiled child of her father. By affirming, after long reflection, that the Virgin never lost her original innocence and that she is the new Eve, the Church affirms nothing more than the salvation of the one who was to become Mother of the Savoir. She was redeemed by God, in a unique and pre-eminent way, through her saving work of her Son. Her whole life was one of fidelity to a vocation wondrously announced, Hail Full of Grace! This is good news for the entire world, the optimistic assurance that, in the universe of salvation, God is faithful to His promise. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass schedule for the Holy Day is: at 7:30 am, 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. Mass Intentions 7:30 a.m. Noriene Schuetz (Grace & Ralph Shaw & Jay & Justin Kolander) 9:00 a.m. For the People of Holy Sepulcher 7:00 p.m. James Daley (Beining Family) Tuesday, December 9 7:30 a.m. Garry L. Psalm Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading Conduct yourselves in holiness, hastening the coming of the day of God (2 Peter 3:8-14). Gospel I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:1-8). The Sanctuary Candle is burning this week in memory of Ralph Marino, with Love, Rita Marino. Please pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of Robert Lofink (Father of Darlene Biernesser & Renee Eichenlaub) and Rita Ballute (mother of Julia Wolfe) who recently passed away and is enjoying everlasting life. Second Sunday in Advent - Year B Reflection Today s readings proclaim the great promise of Advent: The Lord will Come. The message is double-edged. It offers both threat and comfort. The second letter of Peter foresees a terrible holocaust. When the Lord comes, the earth will be swallowed up in fire. Deutero-Isaiah envisions a glorious return from exile. When the Lord comes, the earth will be renewed. John the Baptist holds the key to the paradox. When the Lord comes, he will pour out upon the earth the baptism of the Holy Spirit. In the purifying fire of conversion the world as we have known it in its sin passes away; from the ashes of its evil emerge the new heavens and the new earth, the promised Kingdom of God. We are right to anticipate its coming with joy and yet with dread. We are the world to be transformed in the fire of the Spirit. Yet the Lord whom we anticipate has already come among us. The power of the Spirit has been unleashed upon the world. The waters of baptism are being poured out. The work of transformation is at hand. It commits us both to exile and to promise. We must continually leave behind the former earth, the former society, the former self marked by sin, dear though they may be in their familiarity. We must continually look forward to the Kingdom where the justice of God will reside as it comes into being to fulfill our every hope. It is uncomfortable to be an Advent people, caught between a world that is dying and a world being born. Yet we may not stand idle between history and promise. We have work to do. There are valleys of want to be filled in mountains of injustice to be brought low. We have a highway to build for our God through the wilderness of our hearts and our societies. To us it is given to make ready the new heavens and the new earth so that the message of the Lord s coming may indeed be good news to all the world.

Thank you to all! This was a very difficult week for our collections, so Holy Sepulcher s efforts were much appreciated. The Central Blood Bank Advent Penance Service, Monday, December 15 Advent is a time for preparation, when we make ready to celebrate the mystery of Our Lord s coming as man, the beginning of our redemption. Advent also moves us to look forward with renewed hope to the Second Coming of Christ when God s plan of salvation will be brought to fulfillment. We are reminded, too, of Our Lord s coming to each of us at the hour of our death. We must make sure that He will find us prepared for His coming as the Gospel tells us Blessed are those who are found awake when the Lord comes. (Luke 12:37). This Service of Penance, which will be celebrated on December 15 at 7:00 pm, is meant to make us ready in mind and heart for the Coming of Christ, which we are soon to celebrate in the Mass of Christmas. We encourage all adults, high school and grade school students to attend this evening with their families. There will be six priests available that evening for the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation). Dec. 13, 4:00 pm L. Fey, C. Loncaric, K. Lutzic, C. Matta, D. Matta, S. Pieto, J. Tosto, N. Yarnot, M.
