APRIL 2016/ 5776 Special Melodies for the Passover (Pesach) Holiday Passover is a holiday of redemption. With the annual retelling of the Exodus drama, we Jews are reminded of our ancestors escape from the physical and spiritual shackles of slavery. The theme is captured in the phrase z man cheiruteinu the season of our freedom, which inspires the Jewish people to reflect on their struggles of the past and give thanks for the blessings of the present. The promise of redemption for all peoples still eludes us, but the dream remains, and the determination is still at the core of the Jewish journey for Tikkun Olam the Repairing of our World. In some ways, Pesach is our paradigm of redemption. We tell the story of our past and also include in the telling our hopes for the future. With great ceremony, replete with wonderful symbols and awesome imagery and music, we reenergize ourselves for the task yet at hand. The Exodus is not yet complete; we are still completing it. The Israelites did not sing the Song at the Sea (Exodus 15) with its Mi Chamocha Who is Like You, our Eternal God? when the first person walked through the Sea of Reeds on dry ground, They sang it when the last person was free and safe. There are special melodies and prayers that instantly remind us of Passover. The signature melody of the holiday is Adir Hu God is Mighty. An unknown poet wrote this hymn as an alphabetic acrostic. Though the melody has gone through several changes over the years, the earliest existing music found dates from 1644 Rittangel Hagada. This same melody is what we sing today. We also use this signature melody of Passover to sing Mi Chamocha during the holiday.
APRIL 2016/ 5776 The melody that is used for the Passover Kiddush and other blessings during the holiday is based on a musical prayer motif or what is called the Nusach for Shalosh R galim The Three Pilgrimage Festivals of Sukkot, Passover (Pesach), and Shavuot. The traditional Passover Kiddush sounds different from the one we sing for Shabbat or the one we sing for Rosh Hashanah. The different music is there to give us a taste of the holiday. Just by listening we are instantly connected to the uniqueness of the holiday. Who can imagine a Seder without the singing of Dayeinu? This year, as we celebrate the Exodus from Egypt and our passage to freedom, let us gather around the tables family and friends let us read from the Haggadah and let us enjoy singing the special melodies that help us recreate in our imagination the miracles of our fantastic heritage, z man cheiruteinu at this season of our freedom!
