PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ Our parish ac vi es are back in full swing in this month of September. On this Sunday, Sep. 9 th at 12:00pm we will celebrate our 3 rd annual Blue Mass, hosted by our Knights of Columbus. A Blue Mass honors police officers, firefighters, and first responders. The Knights have invited not only the departments from Schiller Park, but from surrounding communi es as well. I am proud that we can celebrate this Mass at St. Beatrice to honor and pray for those who risk their lives every day to keep us safe. Next, our Religious Educa on (RE) program starts up again this fall. RE is for children in grades 1-8. All Catholic students who do not a end a Catholic grade school should be enrolled in RE so that they can learn about and be formed in the Catholic faith. And there certainly is much to learn about our faith (if you want proof, go find a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and look at how big it is!) This is why it is so important that Catholic children be enrolled for all eight years of RE. Unfortunately, many parents choose to only enroll their children only in grades 1-2 and 7-8 in order to prepare them for First Communion and Confirma on, respec vely. But this does a great disservice to the children, because when they miss grades 3, 4, 5, and 6, and then return to grade 7 in order to prepare for Confirma on, their knowledge of the faith lacks far behind those who stay with the program all eight years. Therefore, I encourage all Catholic parents whose children a end public grade school to enroll them in RE. Registra on for our 2018-19 classes will take place next Saturday, Sep. 15 th from 9am to 3pm at the school building. The first RE class will take place on Saturday, Sep. 22 nd at 9:00am. And please know that you do not need to be a registered parishioner at St. Beatrice in order to enroll your child(ren). Another event happening next Saturday is a Pasta Dinner hosted by our Women s Club (WC). It will take place on Sep. 15 th at 6:00pm at the Schiller Park Community Center, located at 4501 N. 25 th Ave. Tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for children age 5-12, and children 4 and under are free. The food will be catered by Cuomo Catering. Proceeds from the dinner will go to help our parish with our ongoing maintenance expenses, and I d like to thank WC President Karen Lima and the WC for pu ng this dinner together. The Pasta Dinner, like other events here at St. Beatrice, is not only a great social event, but it also serves as a fundraiser for the parish (and I am very grateful to our parish groups like the Women s Club, Knights of Columbus, and Parish Council for the work they do to help raise funds for St. Beatrice). The reason we need fundraisers is because our Sunday collec on comes in under budget (and some mes substan ally under budget) on virtually every weekend of the year. But even when our collec ons drop, our bills do not, so we rely on fundraisers to help us make up the difference. One very easy fundraiser that we ve now ins tuted is AmazonSmile, which is connected with the online retailer, Amazon. If you like to shop on Amazon, then I encourage you to instead shop on AmazonSmile, which offers the same products as Amazon. All you need to do is go to www.smile.amazon.com and select St. Beatrice Church from the list of approved chari es. Once you choose us as your charity, there s nothing else that you need to do. Every me you make a purchase on AmazonSmile, St. Beatrice will receive 0.5% of that purchase price. Yes, it s a small percentage, but if many parishioners u lize this, it will add up over me, and every dollar certainly helps us! So, please consider using AmazonSmile whenever you shop online, especially when it comes to Christmas shopping (although I don t want to men on Christmas yet because I refuse to let go of summer!) As I said, all you need to do is select us once, and that s it; every me you shop on AmazonSmile a er that, St. Beatrice can benefit from it. It s an easy fundraiser because we re not asking you to do anything more than what you normally would. St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

PAGE THREE Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: In today s Gospel we hear how Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak! In living the gospel, we must open our ears to hear and recognize all the everyday opportunities for making God s presence known especially to those who are poor and suffering. On September 9, the Church also celebrates the Feast of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Frederic heard the call of Jesus to love and serve those who are suffering. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can make God s presence known to those who are suffering and poor? ST. BEATRICE WOMEN S CLUB We will also be selling tickets for our first Pasta Dinner and Raffle to be held on Saturday, September 15th at 6:00pm at the Schiller Park Community Center located at 4501 N. 25th Avenue. The cost of the dinner is: adult $20, children 5 to 12 years $12.00, and children 4 and under are free. The dinner is being catered by Cuomo Catering. Proceeds from this event will go to the parish to help with repair expenses. As always, thank you for the continued support of the Women s Club. Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It s a venerable Catholic custom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupations of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devotion, and although from time to time the Vatican declares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is free-wheeling and just about uncontrollable. Still, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would often associate themselves with heavenly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you re stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cupertino is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you re in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Vatican has from time to time assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS patients, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow novices during a terrible plague. Anything that matters to us nation, parish church, occupation, illness can have a patron, and it is an aspect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the communion of saints is to know that the ties that bind us as a communion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life s struggles, we do not stand alone. Who is your patron saint? Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
