THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD FINDING GOD The splendid Magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity, march right up off the pages of Matthew s Gospel and into our Church today. Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these Magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the King of the World that stretches to the Magi s home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We, too, see and understand anew. Like the Magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the King of the Universe and light of the world. Like the Magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. We are asked to find God where God is to be found, to be attentive and surprised and ready to bow down in adoration and to offer our gifts. OUR MISSION AT ST. CATHARINE S We are a Catholic faith community that worships God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord. And, we are blessed with the joy of God s love. ST. CATHARINE S PARISH REGISTRATION We respectfully request that all of our regular Massgoers make sure they are officially registered with our Parish, use the envelope system, or WeShare, our online giving program, and get as involved as they can in our Parish organizations, ministries, and activities. We are always in need of volunteers to step forward and serve our Parish as Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers, Choir Members, and Altar Servers. Please make a resolution this New Year to become more involved in our wonderful Parish! One Church, many ways to serve. TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY & CATHOLIC COMMUNICATIONS CAMPAIGN will provide funding for academic scholarships at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., as well as, for the Catholic Communications Campaign. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The Lord shines upon you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading The Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel Magi from the East arrived, looking for the newborn King of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-12). PLEASE GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE! PARISH BLOOD DRIVE THIS SUNDAY, JANUARY 6 th, 9-1:30 PM IN THE CAFETERIA Please join your fellow parishioners, and our cosponsors, the St. Dominic s Knights of Columbus, in donating this gift of life to those who may be in need. This is a very important effort as blood supply is low and demand is high during these winter months. All blood types are needed. You must be at least 17 years of age, have valid I.D., and not have donated blood in the previous 56 days.

WE THREE KINGS We Three Kings of Orient are Bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star. Refrain O star of wonder, star of night. Star with royal beauty bright. Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light. This beautiful carol centers around the Biblical Magi, who visited Jesus during His Nativity and gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh while paying homage to Him. Though the event is recounted in the Gospel of Matthew, there are no further details given with regards to their names, the number of Magi who were present, or whether they were even royal. Hence, the names of the Magi Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar, and their status as Kings from the Orient are legendary, based on tradition. Rev. John Henry Hopkins, Jr., wrote his carol in 1857 and organized it in such a way that three male voices would each sing a single verse by himself in order to correspond with the Three Kings. The first and last verses of the carol would be sung together by all three as verses of praise, while the intermediate verses are sung individually with each King describing the gift he was bringing. The refrain proceeds to praise the beauty of the Star of Bethlehem. It was extremely uncommon that Hopkins wrote both the lyrics and music; contemporary carol composers usually wrote either the lyrics or music, but not both. Hopkins wrote We Three Kings for a Christmas pageant being held at the General Theological Seminary in New York City where he was studying and, for a time, it was sung just within his circle of family and friends. Because of the popularity it achieved among them, Hopkins decided to publish the carol in 1862. It was the first Christmas carol originating from the United States to achieve widespread popularity. AN EXTRA-SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR ALTAR SERVERS We would like to thank our wonderful Altar Servers for their faithfulness to their ministry and our parish over the course of the past year and especially for their service during this past Christmas season. They deserve our recognition and extra-special thanks for their commitment. EPIPHANY AROUND THE WORLD Epiphany is the time when Christians remember the Wise Men, or Three Kings, who visited Jesus. It is celebrated differently all over the world. The celebration of the night before Epiphany is known as Twelfth Night in England. Traditionally, it is a time for plays, practical jokes, and Twelfth Night Cake. The Yule Log is lit on Christmas Day and remains burning until Twelfth Night in order to bring good fortune to the house for the coming year. For Christians, the symbolism of the Yule Log is that it represents the need to keep the stable warm for baby Jesus. The Twelfth Night Cake is a rich and dense fruitcake which contains a bean. If you get the bean, you are King or Queen for the Day, and everyone has to do what you tell them to do! In Mexico, where Epiphany is known as El Dia de Los Reyes (the Day of the Kings), it s tradition to eat a special cake called Rosca de Reyes (Three Kings Cake). A figure of the Baby Jesus is hidden inside the cake and whoever finds the Baby Jesus in their piece of cake is the Godparent of Jesus for that year. It s quite an honor! In Puerto Rico, they celebrate Los Reyes or The Kings. Children cut grass or greenery and put it in a box under their bed - this is grass for the camels to eat. Los Reyes only visit if the children have been good throughout the year. Sometime during the night, Los Reyes arrive and quietly leave gifts for the children while the camels enjoy their snack of grass. When the children wake up, toys and other presents have replaced the grass. It is a day full of wonder and celebration! Some towns in the Philippines have parades of three men each wearing royal robes riding on horses, in lieu of camels. They toss gifts to children who line the streets eagerly awaiting their arrival and the little presents the Three Kings bring with them. Mass follows, after which parents, children, siblings, relatives, grandchildren, godparents, and friends all exchange gifts. Each house is open to welcome visitors. The celebration typically lasts the whole day. In the Philippines, the celebration of Epiphany is also known as Pasko ng Matatanda, the Feast of the Elderly, to honor its Senior Citizens. In celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany in Ireland, the date is marked by Nollaig na mban or Little Women s Christmas. On this day, it is the tradition for the women, who worked so tirelessly during the holiday season, to get together and enjoy their own Christmas while the menfolk stay at home and handle all the chores. The courageous choice made by that young woman to give birth in difficult circumstances, supported by a man named Joseph, still stands as a model of God s way to handle unplanned pregnancy. THE SIGN OF PEACE COLD AND FLU SEASON For some people, the Sign of Peace is a wonderful opportunity to express their love and sense of community with handshakes, kisses, and hugs. With cold and flu season upon us, it is certainly acceptable to nod, wave, or speak a greeting of peace. The important thing to remember is that Christ is present in our midst and to acknowledge that presence in one another. The Altar Flowers were donated In Loving Memory of The Pigat and Cicalo Families We love you and miss you! From The Cicalo Family The Tabernacle Candle will burn before the Blessed Sacrament the week of January 6 In Loving Memory of Rose Lennon From Len and Joan Feroldi For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.
