Fall 2018

Welcome Whether you re a committed parishioner or curious visitor, you are always welcome here. This fall, we re celebrating new developments and old traditions at St. Paul s. We re busily and joyfully renovating our Children s & Youth Ministries, and we re looking forward to welcoming the Rev. Mark Wastler in October as our new University Chaplain and Associate Rector. Our adult and junior choirs are growing and thriving under the leadership of Music Director & Organist Deke Polifka. We ll be blessing animals in October, celebrating All Saints with the choir of Trinity Church, Staunton, sending teenagers off to the Senior High Weekend at Shrine Mont, and preparing our biggest and best pageant in years for Christmas Eve. Beyond St. Paul s, we re working with IMPACT to promote justice in our own community, serving dinner for neighbors in need at the Salvation Army, gearing up to host two weeks of the PACEM women s shelter, and nurturing our new partnership with the Episcopal community of Christ the King in Leger, Haiti. All of this fellowship and ministry begins in worship. When we gather in prayer and song with whoever happens to show up young and old, from nearby and far away, deeply Christian and deeply uncertain we catch glimpses of the community God calls the Church to be. I hope you ll want to show up and catch a glimpse of that community at St. Paul s this fall! The Rev. William Peyton, Rector will.peyton@spmcuva.org

Children s Ministries The Renovation of our Children s & Youth ministries is underway! Our consultants from Ministry Architects told us from the beginning that they would make sure we could live in the house while it s being renovated. That s exactly what we re doing this year! The renovation culminates in 2019 with a search for a professional Director of Children s & Youth Ministries. If you have children at home, you should be on our St. Paul s Families email list to receive news about the nursery, Sunday school, and family events. Contact Office Manager Alice Fitch (alice.fitch@spmcuva.org) to add your email address to the list. Nursery The nursery is open from 9:30 to 12:15 every Sunday! St. Paul s nursery is equipped for both Littles (infants and toddlers in diapers) and Bigs (through kindergarten). No matter which group seems right for your child, he or she will be happy and safe with our warm and wonderful nursery staff. Nursery-age children are equally welcome in the nursery and in worship. Whatever works for your family works for St. Paul s. Sunday School We have three Sunday School classes! We re in the Church School wing every Sunday from 11:15 to noon. Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade A play-based, imagination-rich introduction to Bible stories through the Montessori-based Godly Play curriculum. 2nd and 3rd grades A more advanced version of Godly Play, with lots of I wonder... questions. 4th and 5th grades Discussion, games, and projects based on the lectionary (i.e., the Bible readings assigned for a particular Sunday).

Youth Groups Youth Ministries The Middle School (grades 6-8) and High School (grades 9-12) Youth Groups meet for conversation and fellowship every Sunday from 11:15 to noon, and for social, spiritual, and service events at other times throughout the year! Youth Group leaders include Steve Bolton, Matthew Carter, Kevin Lonabaugh, Beth Molmen, Maggie Rogers, and Kevin Warren. Speak to one of them or email office@spmcuva.org to make sure you re on the Youth Group email list for more information. UVA Students If You Are An Undergraduate Student Canterbury Episcopal Fellowship is a place where students can grow spiritually and engage questions of the Christian faith. Canterbury meets every Wednesday evening during the academic year at 5:30 p.m. for a prayer service, followed by dinner, fellowship, and discussion. For more information, contact student leaders Lachlan (lsh3th@virginia.edu) or Sarah (sdp3nk@virginia.edu). If You Are A Graduate Student The St. Paul s 20s and 30s group is a fellowship group of grad students and other young adults. Contact the church office to be added to the 20s and 30s email list. office@spmcuva.org

Music There are many opportunities to experience and participate in music at St. Paul s. Our worship features vibrant congregational singing, excellent choirs for children and adults, and beautiful instrumental offerings. Bless, O Lord, us Thy servants who minister in Thy temple. Grant that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts, and what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Junior Choir Our Junior Choir is generally for children and youth in grades 3-8. Rehearsals are Wednesday afternoons from 4:30-5:20 p.m. Choristers and their families are invited to stay for a brief informal Evening Prayer service at 5:30 p.m., and for a kid-friendly dinner at 6 p.m. In rehearsals, we work on healthy singing techniques and basic music skills, while having fun along the way! The Junior Choir sings about once a month for our 10 a.m. Sunday service, and for special events like Blessing of the Animals, Lessons and Carols, and the Christmas Eve pageant. This program is affiliated with the worldwide Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), which provides many important resources and opportunities.

Music Chancel Choir Our Chancel Choir is the principal musical ensemble of St. Paul s, singing each week for the 10 a.m. Sunday service, as well as for major feast days, Choral Evensongs and special concerts. This choir consists of 25-30 volunteers with a wide range of ages and varying musical backgrounds. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7 9 p.m. (Sept.-May). New members are encouraged and always welcomed. Special Music Events The superb acoustics of our worship spaces make St. Paul s an ideal venue for a variety of special musical events which are presented throughout the year. This year there are performances by several guest ensembles, including the Notre Dame/UVA Glee Clubs, the UVA Women s Chorus and Zephyrus Early Music Ensemble. The St. Paul s choirs will combine with the choirs of Trinity Episcopal Church, Staunton for a festive Choral Evensong on All Saints Day Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. Look for details about these and other special musical events in the newsletter and yellow sheet. I invite you to explore the ways you can be involved in this part of our ministry, whatever your musical background! Deke Polifka, Director of Music and Organist deke.polifka@spmcuva.org
